Point to the capital letter A and say This is the capital letter A. Point to the small letter a and say This is the small letter a. • Write ‘A’ and ‘a’ on the board slowly and say the letter name. Ask the children to follow you and write ‘A’ and ‘a’ in the air with their index finger several times. • When the children are more familiar with the letter shapes, you may tell them to write the capital and small letters quickly or slowly in the air. Let’s write in the air! 1 2 1 2 3 • Let the children pass the Letter Cards ‘A’ and ‘a’ around. Encourage them to trace the letters with their index finger and say the letter name. • Draw a line on the board. Stick the Letter Card ‘A’ on one side and the Letter Card ‘a’ on the other side. Make sure they are far apart. Say capital letter A or small letter a and ask the children to point to the corresponding letter on the board. 3 Time for a Story • Show the children the Big Book. Ask the children What letter is this? to elicit a. Pass the apples • Show the children the real apples. Talk about the different colours (e.g. red, green and yellow). Language Points to Note 1 Achoo’s name Achoo’s name comes from ‘ahchoo’, which is the word for the sound people make when they sneeze. Another word for the sneezing sound is ‘atishoo’. 2 ‘You’ and ‘I/me’ Young children may confuse the pronouns ‘you’ and ‘I/me’. Instead of saying ‘I want’, some children may say ‘you want’. Actions may help them differentiate between first- and second-person pronouns.
