Bethany Christian Schools 2011-12 Annual Report Principal’s Report —Allan Dueck In 2011-12 innovation enhanced Bethany’s capacity to equip students with learning that lasts and faith that lives. Academic programming. We significantly increased the number of course offerings for collegebound students—four Advanced Placement courses and five high school-college dual-credit courses. The faculty also explored new ways to differentiate instruction to facilitate all students’ learning. At the beginning of the year, Dr. Solomon Abebe led teachers in a workshop on “differentiating instruction” and subsequently, during collaborative-group meetings, teachers worked at implementation. We also strengthened students’ preparation for using various computer platforms and software. Teachers, utilizing their new Macbook Pro laptops, explored new ways of leveraging technology to facilitate students’ learning and experimented with techniques such as the “flipped classroom.” Innovation also bolstered the mentoring program and J-Term, two of Bethany’s premiere programs. During bi-weekly conversations, mentor teacher and student discussed things that matter: academic progress, spiritual growth, and personal challenges and joys. J-Term, on the other hand, engaged students in hands-on, real-life learning. Opportunities for gifts development. Three high-profile successes of 2011-12 were the outstanding performance of the boys soccer team, which advanced to semi-state; blossoming of the speech and debate team; and the stellar production of the musical Joseph. The foundation for these successes is Bethany’s commitment to offer students a holistic education—emphasizing academic quality while at the same time inviting students to develop a range of skills and values. Faith development. Opportunities for service and student involvement in chapels were highlights. By visiting shut-in senior citizens, picking up litter in parks and along roadsides, and volunteering at church camps, Bethany students cultivated service BCS Annual Report 2011-12 / Page 2 as a valuable Christian discipline. And, by participating in a worship band or sharing in chapel, students developed both appreciation of worship and skills for participating in church life. A Word from the Board Chair —Jaime Alvarez From my perspective as board chair, I share some highlights of 2011-12. • After two or three challenging admissions years during the recent economic recession, I’m pleased to highlight last year’s enrollment of 255, an increase of 3%. • A pair of two-year pilot programs began in 201112. A combined 4th-5th grade class, with strong enrollment of 19 students, added an exciting dimension to school life. New daily bus service made it feasible for students from Elkhart and west to enroll. • Indiana’s new Choice Scholarship, or voucher program, increased access for low and middle-income students. In the program’s inaugural year, 28 students received voucher funding—support that directly lowered tuition costs for families and indirectly benefited Partnership congregations. • The board completed a major initiative: thorough revision of the Bylaws and all board policies. This achievement positioned the board for effectiveness not only in overseeing fiduciary matters but also in providing meaningful strategic leadership. • A task force of alumni, business leaders, educators, and students began charting a long-term path to sustainability. Their work set the stage for Bethany to lead in environmental stewardship and sustainability, to provide up-to-date technology education, and to ensure long-term financial sustainability. Bethany’s mission is to integrate faith and academic excellence “to equip students for Christian discipleship in the church and around the world.” In carrying out this mission in 2011-12, Bethany again touched many students. I thank employees for breathing life into the school’s mission, and I thank you for supporting Christian education at Bethany. 2 0 11 - 1 2 Y e a r - E n d F i n a n c i a l R e p o r t : G e n e r a l F u n d Support and Revenue Special Services Net tuition/fees...........$2,072,227 Contributions................$478,055 Investment income..........
