(FSS) took part in the Be There 4 Seniors Rally at Liberty Plaza across from our Georgia State Capitol. Why a rally for Seniors? Each year Home and Community based support services are part of the proposed budget reductions in government aging programs. Each year thousands of seniors are in need of Home and Community Based Services that are critical to promoting independence, reducing the number of people on wait lists for in home services(over 13,000 statewide currently), support for their caregivers, as well as protecting the vulnerable. Skilled care facilities, like nursing homes costs the state four times more per year than the costs of helping one person remain at home. The Be There 4 Seniors Rally, though dampened by rain storms, did not keep FSS and other Senior Center facilities from being there to show their concern over decreases in funding for services that would affect seniors and the disabled. With close to 250 people in attendance, chants like “Wait No More” “Ten Million More” and “In-Home Services Cost Less” could be heard throughout the rally as people, largely seniors, stood in the rain for a chance to be heard and seen in a cause that hits home for so many. “Let’s face it, we are all aging, but will we be able to age gracefully?” - Marie Doyle, Care Manger Supervisor with FSS Four recipients of services provided by FSS took a bus with a few staff members and volunteers to rally against proposed budget cuts and rally for increased funding in government aging programs. All were eager to attend and as one senior explained; Fayette Senior Services has done so much for her through supportive services that attending the rally gives her the chance to help all Seniors like her who need help to remain in their home. Each one agreed that the services they have received have helped them beyond measure. Whether it is through in-home services, meals on wheels, transportation or an opportunity to join others socially and nutritionally outside the home, it seems many would be unable to remain at home without these supportive services. After multiple years of budget funding cuts we need to look to the Legislators to invest in supportive services for our Seniors and caregivers. Evidence supports that these services are cost effective and how important it is to provide a path to home care services where people can find the support, love and care they need to age in place. Seniors want the Legislators to recognize the increased requirements for funding and life-sustaining services for older Georgians. 770-461-0813 | FAYSS.ORG Fayette Senior Services supports Georgia’s efforts on behalf of our Seniors and are committed to supporting services that help seniors age well and live well in their homes. Please contact 770-461-0813 to find out more information on how you can help. Imagine what a difference these services could make to each of us as we age, as long as funding stays available. Be a voice for seniors! April 2015 | 5 Members can enjoy Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center activities in two great locations: ABOUT US Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services, Inc., (FSS) an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, has been providing a wide array of life -enriching services to Fayette County residents age 50 and better. Fayette County, Georgia, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations in metro Atlanta – and the age 60+ population segment is projected to grow an astonishing 450% by 2040. This statistic alone makes our mission — to make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of older adults — all the more critical. By fostering independence, improving quality of life, and enhancing the community connection, the programs and services we provide are an essential part of our community. Not-for-profit FSS enjoys a unique public/private partnership with Fayette County government. Through this agreement we provide a variety of supportive services such as Meals On Wheels, Transportation, In-home Personal Care/ Homemaker Services, Care Management, Information Assistance, and more. We could not do that without our government partners; however, we believe it is our responsibility to complement the public support to ensure we can continue serving Fayette’s seniors for generations to come. Therefore, we feel it’s important to note that less than half of our revenue comes from sources other than federal, state, and local governments. Fayette Senior Services is recognized as a model of sustainability and social entrepreneurship among peer organizations and nongovernment funders. Although we are proud of this recognition, we could not do all that we do without the support from charitable donors, Center members, volunteers, grantees, and the community that so generously supports our fundraising efforts. The aging transition can be paved with a broad spectrum of challenges. However, it can also prove to be rich with opportunities. The key to “aging well” is knowledge. When it comes to addressing those unique needs, Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center is the one-stop shop for empowering older adults to live well and age well. Our Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville is uniquely different from traditional senior centers. Our beautiful facility is a vibrant place where adults age 50+ come to socialize with friends, enjoy a great meal in our Ultimate café, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their spirits. To make sure our programs and activities are within easy reach to more seniors, we are proud to have established a community partnership with the city of Peachtree City. We now offer many new programs and activities in Peachtree City at the Gathering Place (next to “The Fred” Amphitheater) and at our newest facility, McIntosh Place. We’re adding new classes and activities each month during our expansion to PTC, so stay tuned for more! We offer supportive services that make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of older adults by preserving their independence, improving their quality of life, and connecting them to the community. Meals On Wheels Meals on Wheels is a needs-based program for homebound, or semi-homebound, seniors who are unable to provide themselves with regular nutritious meals due to physical or financial challenges. The service also connects homebound seniors to the community through daily social contact, which also helps to ensure their well-being. Ani-Meals To many homebound seniors, having a pet is a source of companionship and comfort. The AniMeals™ program is designed to give our Meals On Wheels clients a little help with the cost of pet food to make sure that maintaining that important bond isn’t an added burden. STAR Program (Seniors Together After Retirement) Our STAR program (Seniors Together After Retirement) offers individuals 60 and older an opportunity to come together for socialization, recreational activities, health and wellness classes, and a nutritious meal in our Ultimate Cafe. Transportation to and from the Center may also be available to eligible participants. By: Pamela Pruitt Eagles Landing Country Club, she didn’t want to do it. “I thought to myself, I can’t do that. I could never do something like that.” But Pat did agree even though she was apprehensive about taking the position. “I look back now and realize that the Lord was preparing me. I believe that God prepares us for what he has called us to do.” Pat was born and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. She was on the Drill Team for three years and ran track at Therrell High School. She met her husband David during her senior year. David had transferred there from another school and couldn’t transfer his rank (ROTC), so he decided to join the chorus instead. Pat and David were extras in the high school musical “Camelot” and what began as a friendship soon turned into a wonderful, loving, forty year marriage with three children and 6 grandchildren. After high school, Pat worked for five years at Bailey Banks and Biddle Jewelers as a bookkeeper until they started their family. She put up the spreadsheets and ledgers at Bailey’s and became a full time homemaker, raising the kids and taking care of David. During the time the children were enrolled at Greater Atlanta Christian School, she worked at the school as a paraprofessional for 1st grade and kindergarten as well as helped out in the school library. When a lady approached Pat about volunteering to be one of the coordinators for the LPGA Tournament at At church Pat loved singing in the choir, but they needed helpers in the nursery, so she felt led to volunteer and found such joy spending time with the babies and toddlers. “It just seemed to come natural to me. I had this ability to calm them and get them focused on something while the parents slipped out of the nursery to attend church. I was soon nicknamed “The Baby Whisperer.” This act of obedience to work in the nursery brought with it the position of coordinator of the nursery on Sunday mornings. Eight years later she is still as passionate about it as ever. “It’s really funny how the Lord has such a sense of humor. I hate to clean. I mean, I really hate to clean! But in the nursery there is a lot of cleaning that has to be done. So I decided that if I had to get down on all fours and clean toys and what not, I could pray while doing so. I began to pray for the babies and toddlers, their parents and the teachers. It was such a joyful experience that I found myself forgetting that I was cleaning, and hated to clean,” Pat chuckled. Now Pat enjoys spending time with her mom, Allene Roan, and her mother-in-law, Virginia Smith (a MOW volunteer for 24 years), who are so near and dear to her heart. Since her father-in-law passed away, Pat assists Virginia on her MOW’s route and with any other tasks that are needed and helps out cleaning (see the Lord’s humor?) the house for her mother. “Sometimes the thing we hate most in the beginning [cleaning], ends up bringing the most joy. Fitness Corner with Miriam Question: My entire life I’ve always been able to maintain a healthy weight through proper diet and portion control. Since I don’t have unhealthy weight issues, do I still need to exercise? Answer: Absolutely! The benefits of exercise far surpass just weight control. The most important muscle in your body, the heart, functions more efficiently with at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity every day. This will give you the strong foundation you need to maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Also, the body was designed to move and regular physical activity is essential for improved range of motion as well as mobility. In other words, if you don’t move it - you lose it. 14 | April 2015 Lap blankets made and donated by Sit and Stitch in Fayetteville to Outdoors Without Limits (OWL) for those in wheelchairs. 770-461-0813 | FAYSS.ORG Fayette Senior Services and Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s Sixty Plus Services Present: The Gift of Preparedness: The Importance of End of Life Planning Tuesday, April 7 | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fayette Senior Services | 191 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City $25 | Lunch and educational materials provided Without being properly prepared during a time of crisis, decision-making can be difficult and the necessary tasks that are associated with an emergency can seem insurmountable. Goldberg West Point, 1982; University of Michigan Law School, 1990; Member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys & Accredited Veterans Administration Attorney Medicaid applicant with too much income needs “QIT” to qualify for benefits Question: I’m thinking about Medicaid planning for my elderly mother. She has dementia and cannot care for herself anymore. Can she keep her income or will the nursing home take it? She gets $2,350 a month from Social Security and her pension. Answer: Social Security and all other income is considered when applying for Medicaid. The maximum monthly income permitted in 2015 is $2,199. But, your mother can still qualify if her income in excess of $2,199 is placed in a properly drafted and administered Qualified Income Trust (“QIT”), which is also known as a “Miller” Trust. Except for $50 she is allowed to keep as her Personal Needs Allowance, a deduction allowed for her health insurance premiums, and any allowable income her husband may be entitled to, her remaining income is considered her “Patient Liability Cost Share” which must be paid to the nursing home. An experienced Elder Law Attorney can create a QIT and advise you in greater detail. Many factors should be evaluated by the attorney who can start laying the groundwork before you are faced with a crisis.
