Compact crystal clock oscillator for simultaneous two-frequency output of 32.768 kHz and
MHz band developed (size: 2.0 x 1.6 mm)
Nihon Dempa Kogyo Co., Ltd. has developed the world's first*1 2.0 x 1.6 mm compact crystal
clock oscillator that allows simultaneous output of two frequencies of 32.768 kHz and the MHz
band.
This product can be used for a frequency of 32.768 kHz for general clocks and in the MHz
frequency band for microprocessor clocks at the same time. Its compact 2.0 x 1.6 x 0.7 mm size
makes it ideal for mounting on smaller and lower-current devices.
*1: Based on NDK research as of February 2015
The increasing popularity of smartphones and tablet devices has prompted rapid growth in the
market for peripheral wearable devices, such as wristwear and glasses with health care or sport
functions. Wearable devices require miniaturization for ease of use, and must also consume less
power to allow prolonged operation in outdoor environments where recharging is impossible. In
general, wearable devices have two different reference signal sources: the MHz band signal
source generally used for microprocessor control or short-distance radio communication, and a
clock signal source at 32.768 kHz. These two sources have their own oscillation circuits.
This new NDK product combines the two oscillation circuits into a single package just 2.0 x
1.6 mm. This represents a significant reduction in the number of parts used and a reduced
mounting-area of more than 50%*2. Its use can help to lower costs incurred in manufacturing
and quality issues, thereby contributing to higher reliability and productivity. The product also
has an output mode selection terminal that allows users to switch between two-frequency output
and single-frequency output. Current consumption is Typ. 0.8 μA for single-frequency output
(32.768 kHz), which contributes to lower power consumption (Typ. 0.8 mA for simultaneous
two-frequency output).
