Conservancy Launches
Fundraising Campaign to Fulfill the Dream
On Sunday, March 20th the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of Rancho Palos Verdes gathered with
residents and elected officials to launch a $6 million community fundraising campaign to “Fulfill the Dream” of purchasing land that
will complete the 1500-acre Portuguese Bend Nature Preserve.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by Bill Ailor and RPV Mayor Larry Clark, was held at the top of Del Cerro Park, overlooking the magnificent slopes of Portuguese Bend with Catalina Island in the distance. This location is especially meaningful because a
donor recognition site for the preserve will be created on this spectacular overlook. An
estimated 500 Peninsula residents and over 70 community groups cut ribbons and showed
their support for the Preserve.
As part of the campaign, the Land Conservancy announced a Legacy Stakeholder program
that would allow people to contribute by purchasing an honorary deed representing a portion of
the preserve. Patrons who donate $37,000 or more for an honorary deed for a full acre, will be
honored with permanent recognition at the Del Cerro site as a lasting tribute and legacy. Also,
there will be limited naming opportunities for trails, scenic overlooks, and wilderness areas of
the preserve for donors whose gifts exceed $100,000. However, smaller donations are also
encouraged and honorary deeds are available for less than one acre. To learn more about
the Community Campaign to Preserve Portuguese Bend, call Executive Director
Barbara Dye at 310/541-7613 X 205.

President’s Remarks
Now’s The Time
Those of you who have been with the Conservancy for years know that we have
never made a real push for large donations. Our philosophy has been that we will make
that push when we have a real, defined, specific need. Well, now’s the time.
For the past 15 years, we have been working at a slow but deliberate pace to build
the credibility of Palos Verdes as a place where open space should be preserved, to
build local support for the preservation of open space, and to show that we could
actually manage these areas if they were preserved.
We’ve done all three.
PALOS VERDES PENINSULA
Mariposa Circle members demonstrated
their support at the Capital Campaign
launch on March 20.
Some at the State level didn’t believe that there was
actually any significant open space remaining in this part
of Los Angeles County. The State is now a partner in
preserving these lands.
Some at the local level thought preserving large blocks of Peninsula open space was a fantasy
—we’d never be able to raise the funds. We’ve done it. We’ve brought over $13 million to the
Peninsula and acquired nearly 300 acres of developable land to date. It’s not a fantasy. It can be
done.
Some said managing open space would be too expensive—we couldn’t afford it if we did
preserve it. We’ve shown that our community is committed to responsible management. Volunteers have donated thousands of hours and donors have contributed thousands of dollars to make
it happen.
The Land Conservancy has been instrumental in all of these advances. We have focused
community efforts to make our significant open space areas known to County and State officials,
to bring funds here for acquisition and management, and to organize an effective land stewardship program.
As a result, our community is poised to make its last, but most significant preservation
action—the acquisition of 700 acres and the creation of the Portuguese Bend Nature Preserve.
Funding has been identified, we have willing sellers, local and political support is strong. But we
need one last thing—we need to raise $6 million locally, a trigger for an acquisition with a total
price of nearly $30 million.
So if you’re looking for that unique opportunity to leave a legacy in the community where you
live—now’s the time.
If you want to make a contribution that will define the future of this spectacular area—now’s
the time.
If you want to preserve a quality of life unique in the South Bay—now’s the time.
If you want to assure the preservation of an area where adults and children can enjoy the
natural environment and celebrate our creator’s wonders—now’s the time.
So, if you’ve been holding back, waiting for us to bring a deal to the table: we’ve done it. It’s
on the table, and now’s the time to make that larger donation. We need your help. Now.

Capital Campaign News
Fulfill the Dream…
Spread the Word…
We are so fortunate in the South Bay to enjoy so many
outstanding assets like our schools, hospitals, shops and of
course our wonderful people. But in particular we have a very
valuable and unique asset and that is our open space. An asset
that many communities do not have to enjoy.
We need your help to make this Capital Campaign a
success. We’re creating a community-wide team to take the
message of this window of opportunity to the entire Peninsula.
Please fill out the form below to let us know how you can help,
or call the office to volunteer.
As stewards of our community, we
must be diligent about preserving this
asset, for once it is gone, it is gone
forever and cannot be brought back.
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land
Conservancy is working very hard to
acquire, preserve and maintain peninsula
open space with the dream of creating a
1,500 acre nature preserve in Portuguese
Bend. We are honored to chair the
Capital Campaign to raise the six million
dollars needed from the community, to
make this dream a reality.
We invite the communities of the South Bay to join us in
this effort, and to embrace our goal to preserve the scenic
beauty of our coastal open space So we can enjoy it ourselves,
as will our children and many generations to come.
Jim Scharffenberger, Co-Chair
Wayne Sharp, Co-Chair
Thanks to the work of our dedicated
volunteers, we have produced an assortment of Capital Campaign materials.
These include a 7-minute DVD that has
been very well received, a case statement,
a questions and answers document, tshirts, removable window decals, and
more. If you’d like to help spread the
news about the campaign, please stop by
the office to pick up a decal and DVD to
show the community that you support
the campaign.
The state agencies that have committed to provide funds appreciate receiving letters of support. If
you’d like to let them know how you feel about preserving this
open space, address your letter “To Whom It May Concern,”
ask them to preserve Portuguese Bend, and add a sentence
about why you think it’s important. Sign your name and
address and send it to us for delivery.
We appreciate all your help!

Linden H. Chandler Preserve
Interpretive signs have been installed near the Rolling Hills Little League field. The tri-panel
display features information on Linden H. Chandler, the Palos Verdes blue butterfly, and the
preserve’s trail system. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Conservation Corps has volunteered a
work crew to repair and maintain a number of trails damaged by this winter’s heavy rain. The
community-led advisory board has met two times this year supporting the Land Conservancy’s
commitment to involve the local community in the management of its preserves.

The arrival of spring means that the Palos Verdes blue butterfly is in flight at the DFSP. A
healthy natural population has been observed and the Navy’s captive breeding program will once
again help assure the survival of this butterfly species at the DFSP. The nursery continues to
propagate plants for the restoration projects underway at the Preserves.
Education Program
PVPLC docents are busy bringing our education program and nature walk to third grades all
over the Peninsula. This year we are adding Point Fermin Elementary in San Pedro to the 15
other schools that enjoy the program.

The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council approved a revised
Management Plan for the Preserve, including a plan for a trail
system and uses. The Land Conservancy is accepting applications
for the Forrestal Advisory Board (call the office or visit our web
page for an application). The Board’s first task will be to review a list of projects for the Preserve,
including trail improvements.
Once again, REI is teaming up with the PVPLC during National Trails Day on Saturday, June 4.
Volunteers are needed to repair and maintain trails and habitat at the Forrestal Preserve from
9am to noon. We encourage everyone to join in and make this day a big success.
This year is the best in recent memory for wildflowers. Visit the Forrestal Preserve to see a
bumper crop of mariposa lilies, paintbrush, bush sunflowers and wild hyacinths.

Forrestal in March.
George F Canyon Preserve
Spring rains caused some damage to the trail, but the City of RHE has completed repair work
and the Preserve welcomes visitors. When the Nature Center is open, you’ll see a new directional sign on the corner, the goal being to increase the number of visitors. The Nature Center is
open from 1pm to 4pm on Fridays and from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
We’re also forming an Advisory Board for the Center and Canyon. Please call the office or
check the PVPLC web page for an application.
Lunada Canyon Preserve
With the help of two Eagle Scout candidates, Chris Jensen and Kevin Webb, and Girl Scout
Lauryn Gold working on her gold award, the Land Conservancy completed the restoration of an
acre of wetland at the top of the canyon. The restoration will provide food and shelter for native
fauna, improve water quality, and help with erosion control on the immediate area.

White Point Nature Preserve
In partnership with the South Bay Volunteer Center, more than 50 volunteers gathered
and assisted in planting an acre of coastal sage scrub for Caesar Chavez Day in March. “The
work we have done with the Land Conservancy has inspired our youth members to be active
participants in the environment. We now act as stewards of Harbor Regional, the park near
our center,” said Enrique Iribe of the Boys and Girls Club of the South Bay.
The Los Angeles Conservation Corps has assisted with the grassland restoration project
by planting hundreds of herbs and shrubs. Prior to any planting, the Corps members removed Ramona Pei (South Bay Volunteer
Center) shares lessons taught by Cesar
several large infestations of garland daisy (Chrysantheumum coronarium) and mallow (malva sp).
Chavez during their Service Learning
Approximately 30 acres of grassland were seeded in 2004 and six acres were re-seeded in
Project at White Point.
January 2005. The goal of the seeding is to provide
an ample seedbank that will enable perennial bunchgrasses to germinate and become
established. As large stands of the native grasses sway in the breeze, we are reminded of
the success of our seeding efforts. Non-native grasses remain prolific; however, we hope
that with continued persistance, a more pure grassland will thrive.
Our community-led Advisory Board continues to meet monthly. They are focusing
now on providing input for selecting a consultant to develop an Interpretive Plan for the
site. The Plan, which will be developed this spring, will draw on applied psychology,
communications, recreation and learning theories, to tell the story of White Point
through signage, wayside exhibits and printed materials. We wish to create a highly
successful visitor experience, and highlight the site’s natural and cultural history.

Long-Missing Butterfly May be Breeding at Forrestal!
by Martin Byhower
On Saturday, February 19, I was birding in one of my favorite local spots, Forrestal Canyon. It is the
last bastion for many local species of birds (butterflies and plants, too!) Of course, I am always checking
out the plants and butterflies, since this area could and does turn up interesting life of all sorts. I ran into
my friends Carol Selvey and Kevin Larson, and we began exploring together. We noticed a blue butterfly
in the large colony of Astragalus (rattleweed) on the trail above the quarry bowl. We all knew that this
plant was/is the host plant for the endangered PV blue butterfly, which used to occur here and which will
hopefully recolonize the area.
However, when I looked closely at the critter, I saw that it had a tail! A lot of butterflies have a taillike extension on their hindwing, which serves as a “fake head,” evolved to lure predators away from more vital regions. But the
only Blue that has a tail and could be here was one deemed extirpated from the area for 30 years!
Looking around, we found a brownish butterfly without a tail, which turned out to be a very ragged female Western TailedBlue. A few days later, Bill Ailor photographed a haggard but clearly identifiable male WTB! So it looks like we may have a nascent
recolonization of this species, and if it has returned, we can hope that others, including the PV blue, will follow. Who knows what
else will turn up in this remarkable Nature Preserve, which I believe functions as no less than a main branch of the Genetic Library
of our Island-Peninsula’s Natural Biological Heritage!

PVPLC Website Gets a New Look!
If you’ve visited the Land Conservancy website
lately, you’ve probably noticed a few changes. After
ten years, it was time to update a lot of our content
and we thought we’d give it a fresh new look as well.
Portuguese Bend Artist Colony member Rick
Humphrey designed the new page and volunteer
webmaster J.C. Kern translated Rick’s concept to
our website. J.C. then spent many hours helping us
add and update information, documents, photos and
links. We’ve added some new capabilities too. Now, you can even view our new “Fulfill the
Dream” DVD on the web and keep up on the progress of our Capital Campaign.
We think you’ll be pleased with the result, and we hope you’ll have an opportunity to visit
soon to enjoy all the new pictures as well as the information. Our website address remains

Preservation of Open Spaces
A Statement of Purpose
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, public-benefit
corporation formed to preserve undeveloped land in perpetuity as open space for historical,
educational, ecological, recreational and scenic purposes.
A diverse group of volunteers from the South Bay makes up the PVPLC's managing Board of
Directors and its adjunct advisory board. These private citizens have been drawn together by their
belief that open space is crucial to the well-being of our community.
Land acquisition by the PVPLC is through purchase and gift. In addition to the good will
engendered by gift giving, landowners and others who donate land or funds to the PVPLC may
realize significant tax benefits.

Catch the Neighborhood Spirit at Spring for White Point
“A community of people concerned with saving the open space around them”;
“Walking through White Point gives me a feeling of serenity and wonder of the beauty of nature”;
“Having access to this wonderful, wild open space has had a profound impact on my children who constantly
discover new things and have developed a deep love and respect for nature.”
These are a few comments from individuals when asked what White Point means to them. It is in this spirit that the community gathers annually at Spring for White Point to support the
coastal resource, the White Point Nature Preserve.
Each year the Committee pulls together an incredible
selection of art for the silent auction. In various media and a
range of styles, these one-of-a-kind artworks are reason alone

Peninsula Chapter, National Charity
2004 was a very exciting year highlighted by the impressive
progress we’ve made toward our goal to preserve the remaining open
space in Portuguese Bend. Over the years, community support for the
Land Conservancy and its programs has continued to grow and we are
heartened by the 1550 member families, individuals and organizations,
386 new members and many more volunteers who have chosen to
donate their time or services during the past year. In addition,
membership in our sustaining group, the Mariposa Circle, has
doubled, thanks to the generosity of Mike and Virginia Cicoria and
their challenge grant. We thank everyone for your continued support
and your belief in the value of open space for our community.
