Professor N. MURUGAN,Mechanical Engineering Department, CIT obtained his PhD in Mechanical
Engineering (Welding Tech.) from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He obtained both
Master‟s Degree in Production Engineering (PSG Tech) and Bachelor‟s (Honours) in Mechanical
Engineering(Govt. College of Engg., Salem) from Madras University. Served as Visiting Distinguished
Professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, USA during
2010-2011. He served as an Expert Member to prepare Outcome Based Accreditation Manuals for
Engineering, MCA, Pharmacy and Hotel management for NBA.
Professor Murugan has31 years of experience of teaching and research which also include consultancy
and administrative experience at different levels within CIT. His areas of interest are welding,
Modeling welding and Surfacing processes using regression and FEM, fabrication and friction stir
welding of AMMCs, mechanical, metallurgical, wear and corrosion characterization of weldments,
claddings and hardfaced components.
Working as an academician, Professor Murugan has contributed vividly both to industry and academia.
His contribution includes 140 publications in international journals, 23 publications in national level
journals and 176 conference publications. He has guided 33 Ph.D Scholarsand providing individual
guidance to more than 10 PhD research scholars. He had chaired, organized, and conducted numerous
workshops, seminars and conferences. His developmental work includes, obtaining grant from funding
bodies alike; AICTE, UGC, NRB, DSTand DRDO for research projects and developed new
laboratories in different disciplines. He is currently the Advisor, Indian Welding Society.
