SECTION 275123.1 PWCS – MOD – INTERCOMMUNICATION AND CLOCK SYSTEM PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS: A. Drawings and General Provisions of Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions, Division 1 Specification sections, and other sections of the specifications not referenced below shall also apply to the extent required for proper performance of the Work of the section. B. Division-26 Basic Electrical Materials and Methods sections apply to work specified in this section. 1.2 SUMMARY: A. Provide speakers, peripheral devices and other equipment as shown on drawings and/or as specified herein: 1. The intent of these specifications is to provide a complete and satisfactory operating extension of the existing system to selected classrooms as shown. 2. Provide all equipment, accessories and installation of material required whether or not enumerated herein or indicated on the drawings. 3. Wires/cables, control/signal transmission media, raceways, electrical boxes, fittings, and cable trays, which are required with the installation of the intercommunications system, are specified herein and in other Division-16 sections. 1.3 SUBMITTALS: A. Product Data: Submit proposed wiring diagrams and manufacturer’s data on equipment to be supplied. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE: A. The intercommunication supplier shall be a firm with at least five (5) years of successful installations of school projects. B. The supplier shall be the authorized distributor for the products he is submitting on. C. Codes and Standards: 1. Electrical Code Compliance: Comply with applicable local code requirements of the authority having jurisdiction and NEC, including 800 Series articles as applicable to installation, and construction of Intercommunications systems. 2. FCC Compliance: Comply with Part 68 and Subpart J of Part 15, Federal Communications Commission Rules, Pertaining to intercommunication equipment and Class A computer registration by the manufacturer. The supplier of the systems being proposed shall provide an FCC registration number with the submittal. Provide intercommunication and computer equipment with FCC labels indicating applicable FCC registration and numbering. 4. IEEE Compliance: Comply with standard 241, “IEEE Recommended Practice for Electrical Power Systems in Commercial Buildings”. 5. NEMA Compliance: Comply with NEMA’s Pub No. 250, “Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum)”. 6. REA Compliance: Comply with Rural Electrification Administration specifications pertaining to construction and installation of intercommunications cabling. 7. EIA Compliance: Comply with EIA standards RS-453, 455, and 464 pertaining to installation of intercommunications systems. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING: A. Deliver intercommunications equipment and components in factory-fabricated containers or wrappings, which properly protect equipment from damage. B. Store intercommunications equipment and components in original packing. Store inside in a well ventilated-space protected from weather, moisture, soiling, humidity, and extreme temperatures. C. Handle intercommunications equipment and components carefully to prevent damage, breaking, and scoring of finishes. Do not install damaged units or components; replace with new units. 1.6 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING: A. Coordinate with other electrical work including wires/cables, electrical boxes, fittings, and raceways, to properly interface installation of the intercommunication system with other work. B. Sequence installation of the intercommunications system with other work to minimize possibility of damage and soiling during the remainder of construction. 1.7 WARRANTY: A. Installation and all equipment shall be warranted for two (2) year from the date of project Substantial Completion. During this period, repair or replace any item or component showing defects not caused by abuse, at no cost to the Owner. The supplier shall provide a written warranty statement as required, attach a listing of telephone numbers, and the name of the person(s) to be contacted for warranty repairs. B. The supplier shall maintain a full service facility within 75 miles of Prince William County and shall stock necessary parts to facilitate any emergency service required to service the system. This service shall be done within twenty-four (24) hours from time of notification at no additional cost to the Owner. Refer to Section 017836 for additional information. The system components shall be as manufactured by ______________________ equal, provided all of the features, functions, performance requirements and specifications, outlined herein, are met or exceeded. Manufacturer product acceptance as meeting these specifications shall be determined by the architect/engineer and owner. Their decision shall be final. B. Model numbers specified herein are those of __________________________, and constitute type, level of quality, and operational characteristics of the equipment to be furnished. All equipment and installation material, to meet the intention of this specification, shall be furnished whether or not enumerated herein, or shown on the drawings. C. Manufacturers and/or Suppliers which have provided unsatisfactory past installations shall not be considered. D. The existing Intercommunication/Clock System is a _________________________. 2.2 CLASSROOM AND CORRIDOR LOUDSPEAKER & INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR HORN UNITS: A. Loudspeakers, Back Box and Grille Assembly: 1’ x 2’ drop in speaker system, speaker assembly consisting of an eight inch (8”) diameter cone type speaker with a wizzer cone, 25/70 volt transformer and baked white epoxy 1’ x 2’ grille baffle. The speaker shall have a sensitivity of 93 dB SPL at four feet (4’) with eight (8)-watt continuous power rating; three-quarter inch diameter voice coil operating in magnetic flux density of 9,500 gauss. The frequency response shall be 65 to 17,000 Hz. The speaker assembly shall be the Atlas Sound Model #IS125CS. B. Interior paging horns shall be flush mounted wide angle horns consisting of a driver, horn, transformer and mounting bracket. The device shall be the _______________ wide angle horn with a _____________________ flush back box and it shall be used inside as indicated on the plans. C. Exterior paging horns shall be flush mounted and shall be the __________________ horn loudspeaker with a ___________________ flush back box and a Rauland-Borg ACC1014 vandal-proof baffle. 2.3 CABLE: A. Microphone and 600-ohm bridging cables: separate cable run in conduit from each receptacle to audio console and housings. Cables: 2 conductor, twisted, shielded pair, conductors No. 20 0.015” polyethylene covered with shield of aluminum-mylar foil providing 100% shielding; tinned copper bare drain (ground) conductor of No. 22 AWG; all conductors encased in overall jacket on minimum 0.020” chrome vinyl with nominal outside diameter of 0.200”. Cable shall be the West Penn 25292B plenum cable or approved equal. Classroom loudspeakers with call-in circuits: separate (home run) cable run from each loudspeaker/call-in switch location shall be a four conductor and a shield i.e., two (2) shielded and two (2) unshielded conductors. The cable shall be 20 gauge stranded. The cable shall be the West Penn 25359B plenum type or approved equal. C. Corridor and large single room loudspeakers or inside/outside horns in which loudspeakers are paralleled (no associated call-in switch) shall use the West Penn 25293B plenum, shielded pair, 18 gauge stranded or approved equal. 2.4 CLASSROOM CALL-IN SWITCH: A. Flush wall mounted call station. ____________________________ call-in switch. B. Rocker type: SPST momentary (spring-action return). C. Designations: “PUSH TO CALL” stamped on switch, silk screen or surface mounted labels are not acceptable. D. Dimensions: 4-1/2” high, 2-3/4” wide, 1-13/16” deep (single gang plate). E. Terminations: screw terminals. F. Finish: satin finished stainless steel. G. Backbox: flush standard single gang with 3/4” conduit to above ceiling accessible space. H. Call switches with privacy function shall not be permitted in classrooms. 2.5 CONDUIT, TERMINAL CABINETS, AND EQUIPMENT MOUNTING: A. Conduit: provide for all electronics cables indicated and in accord with NEW Article 800 “Communication Circuits” (special attention called to paragraph 300-3d), with fill not to exceed 40% of internal area of conduit, pullboxes required at maximum intervals of two hundred feet (200’) and every two hundred seventy (270) degree of bends; tag all electronics cables at ends in terminal cabinets, device locations, etc., as to area served with Brady B-500 series labels or equivalent; microphone and loudspeaker conduits shall be separate runs. 2.6 CLOCK EQUIPMENT: A. Provide self correcting clocks connected to the existing master clock where indicated on drawings. Clocks shall be secondary type compatible with existing system such as the ____________________, 120 volt clocks with shatter resistant crystal. Glass crystals shall not be considered. Clocks installed in the gymnasiums shall be equipped with protective wire guards. B. Provide battery clocks where indicated on drawings. Clocks shall be equal to American Time and Signal SL12CQC4 battery type, twelve inch (12”) diameter, surface mount, with shatter resistant crystal. Glass crystals shall not to be considered. Provide double faced clock enclosures for clocks where indicated on drawings. D. Coordinate with other sections of Division-26 for the provision of incidental electrical power necessary for clock operation. Provide outlet (type as required by clock manufacturer), recessed box, conduit, wiring, etc., from nearest general receptacle circuit. Identify circuits used on as-builts. 2.7 SPARE PARTS: A. In addition to quantity indicated on the drawings, Contractor shall provide additional intercommunication devices; five (5) classroom speakers, five (5) call switches, five (5) volume controls installed with up to 150 foot of communication cabling for each device. If these additional devices are not installed, the Contractor shall provide a credit back to the Owner. PART 3 - INSTALLATION 3.1 EXAMINATION: A. Examine areas and conditions under which intercommunication systems are to be installed. Notify architect in writing of conditions detrimental to proper completion of the work. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to installer. 3.2 INSTALLATION OF INTERCOMMUNICATION SYSTEM: A. Install intercommunication systems as indicated, in accordance with manufacturer’s written instructions and with recognized industry practices; ensure systems comply with installation and operational requirements of EIA, NEC and the Federal Communications Commission. B. Install all electronic cables within equipment racks housings, and terminal cabinets, neatly laced with Velcro grip ties at not more than six inch intervals, in accordance with latest AES, Standard AM-FM Broadcast installation standards. Label cables with Brady, or approved equivalent, labels at each end as to circuit designations that correspond to “As-Built” drawings. Terminate all cables within terminal cabinets with solder type spade-lug connectors, screw type terminal strips, wire-wrap terminals, or approved equivalent. RF connections to connectors: compression type utilizing center conductor of coaxial cable as center terminal of connector. D. AC wiring within electronics equipment racks and for self correcting secondary clocks shall be installed in conduit in accordance with National Electrical Code. All plugs and receptacles shall be three-conductor grounding type. E. Splices (joints) in audio wiring shall not be permitted except in terminal cabinets or equipment housings (i.e., no splicing permitted in pull boxes or loudspeaker housings). F. Incoming or outgoing wiring within audio equipment racks shall be terminated on terminal blocks. G. Where cable is indicated to be run exposed above ceilings: securely anchor to building structure at maximum four foot (4’) intervals with wide flange type “J” hooks. Run cable in groups parallel and perpendicular to building lines. Keep cables separated from other systems cable. Provide cable routing plan with submittals. In no case shall the cable be secured to, or lay on, the ceiling system. 3.3 GROUNDING: A. Employ unipoint grounding technique. Provide single stranded TW-insulated copper conductor, #10 AWG, in one-half inch (1/2”) conduit, connect to closest water pipe and terminate in equipment racks and housings. 3.4 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING: A. Clean equipment and components of dirt and construction debris upon completion of installation. B. Touch-up scratched or marred enclosure surfaces to match original finishes. C. Protect installed equipment and components from damage during remainder of construction period. 3.5 DEMONSTRATION AND PROOF OF PERFORMANCE: A. Proof of Performance testing of this system shall be the sole responsibility of this specification section. B. Testing apparatus: as manufactured by Rauland, Bruel & Kjaer, General Radio, Hewlett-Packard, and Tektronix, as to type and quality of instrumentation required and acceptable for accuracy of required testing. Only instruments of recent manufacture and/or calibration shall be considered acceptable. C. Make all measurements on job site. D. Performance measurements: 1. Demonstrate all operating functions in complete compliance with systems and individual component specifications. Measure ambient noise level utilizing calibrated sound level meter, with linearscale, calibrated random-frequency response microphone as pickup instrument. Record separate measurements with air-handling equipment on, lighting equipment on, air-handling and lighting equipment on, and with both air-handling and lighting equipment off. 3. Measure impedance of each loudspeaker line at its termination to respective power amplification equipment utilizing an audio frequency bridge with 1,000 Hz sine wave generator. Record each and every measurement as well as total connected load of each system. 3.6 OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS AND MANUALS: A. Furnish the Owner’s officially designated representatives with on-the-job instructions in the operation and maintenance of the system. Prior to on-the-job instructions, furnish to the Owner three (3) bound copies of complete operating and maintenance instructions, factory service manuals, system programming data (include copy of program disk), complete with component schematics and all as built wiring diagrams. These O&M manuals are in addition to those required in Section 017700, Project Closeout.
