And friends leave. Life doesn’t stop for anybody.” - American Writer, Stephen Chbosky M’Liz Callender Change is upon us in the CBYC Bar, James “Jimmy DaBar” Waller is retiring after 22 years of being our bartender and friend. We will miss him, and we send him best wishes on his retirement, and hope that he will take pleasure in the finer things that the future will bring. With Jimmy’s departure, there will be a lot of new faces behind the bar this summer. It may take time for the new faces to learn your name, and in the meantime we need your help. By law, CBYC bartenders are required to ascertain who is a member and who is a guest before serving alcohol. If you wear your name badge, the new staff will learn to identify you as a member more quickly. And as you know, these rules also require all visitors and guests to sign in at the front desk and wear a badge in the bar; please encourage and assist your guests to do so. I have just reminded all of our staff of these rules, and asked them to remind you. There are also some fun things happening in the bar this summer. Chef David is serving “Bar Food” just about every day the bar is open when there is not a dinner planned. People tell me the Bar Food is delicious, so please come down to try it when you have a chance. Behind the bar, there is now a rotating tap, (don’t worry, the Big Eye will rotate back in), which will dispense local craft beer. During the summer we plan to offer drink specials, featured wines, and a craft beer weekend in August. Let me know what you think of the changes! Come down and enjoy the club by celebrating “4 Days of the 4th of July” at CBYC. Music, food, sailing, cruising, and more! Everyone should Dress Ship on the 4th of July. (The CBYC Ship’s Store has three sets of signal flags in stock.) Pakele will be dressed with signal flags, and I encourage other yacht skippers, too. One last important note – next time you are talking to Stacy at the Front Desk, congratulate her on graduating from California State University, Dominguez Hills with a Business Degree. We are proud of her accomplishement. M’Liz Callender Mike Stavros Wow, what great weather we had in June. The weather was perfect for cruising to the island and racing in the Gulch. Cruise Committee Chairman, Jim Clark and the committee members have done a fantastic job planning the Cruises. June had Cruises to Avalon for the mid-Week Hang Loose Cruise and also the Isthmus Theme Cruise. Don’t miss out on the July Cruises to Emerald Bay and White’s Cove. CBYC hosted the Laser PCC’s on the weekend of June 4-5. The Gulch provided its normal great wind and the Racer’s enjoyed all 8 races over the two days. Each Wet Wednesday has seen an increase in the number of boats on the water and I’m looking forward to seeing 30 boats soon. By the way, did you know our Friday Dinghy Races are back? Jonathan Mitsumori is leading the way on Fridays as the PRO. See the NOR in the race rack and online. If you can’t make it on the water on Wednesdays or Fridays you should still get down to the club for the great Burger Bash on Wednesdays and the bar food or CYO on Fridays and of course a visit to the bar. Fleet Captain Summer is here! Fourth of July is upon us! Please remember that parking stickers need to be displayed on the windshield of your car. Please affix the sticker to the windshield on the driver’s side. If you have more cars than stickers and wish to Mike Richards move the sticker from car to car please put the sticker on a plastic plate which you can move around between cars. We don’t recommend that you leave the sticker on the dash because it cannot be seen very well and it can slide down between the windshield and the dash or it can easily be stolen. Additionally, if you drive a high profile vehicle make sure that the sticker can be seen by someone looking from the outside of the vehicle. The reason I bring this all up is that over the summer, the Port Police usually get one or two calls regarding parking violations. If we can’t see your sticker you may get a parking ticket. Out of date stickers are just that! They can no longer be used and need to be exchanged for current stickers next time you are at the club. Please remember to let Dean know when you are going to be out of your slip with a float plan, so that CBYC will have a place for visiting boaters to stay. The Club’s Chili Cook Off is coming so please pull out your best recipes and plan on entering this year’s event. Bragging Rights will be in effect for one year! Like last year we will have an auction of many wonderful items, most of which will be won at significant savings over their actual value. At Family Cruise this year, we will again have our annual Duck Races. Ducks will be on sale for the event over the next couple of months, and the winner does not need to be present. Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 5 The Lighthouse, July 2016 Board of Directors Minutes - June 7, 2016 Commodore Schopp called the meeting to order at 19:00 hours. The Secretary made a roll call and a quorum was established. Commodore Schopp summarized the BCI report. It is recommended that we participate in the 6-12-16 San Pedro Chamber Annual Installation and Business Awards luncheon. There is also a reception for Councilman Joe Buscaino on 6-21-16 at Crafted, and they advise us to attend. Director McCloskey stated that we have three MIPs that have met all the requirements for membership. Accordingly, it was moved and seconded that the following be accepted into membership: Maureen O’Brien (R), Bryan and Connie Downs (RF), and James and Melanie Baeza (RF). Motion passed. Director McCloskey then presented a summary of memberships for June 2016 compared to June 2015. We currently have 398 members compared to 388 in June of last year. Fleet Captain Richards said both the dry storage and wet slips are currently full, thanks to a great job by Dean. There are still ongoing maintenance projects taking place, and some slips may become available, as we have a few boats for sale in the marina. Secretary Perrault stated that she emailed copies of the Minutes from the May Board meeting to all the board members. The minutes were approved. Fleet Captain Richards stated CBYC hosted the Pacific Coast Championships for Laser’s this past weekend. The races went well even though winds were in the high teens. The Juniors will be participating in the final Harken event at St. Francis YC on the 17-19 of this month. July will be a very busy month for all, with major events almost every weekend. Changes in school district schedules required an adjustment of the date for the first summer session to June 13th. Flyers for Junior sailing went out this week, and many flyers have been distributed throughout Wilmington and San Pedro. Rear Commodore Stavros said Wet Wednesdays are going well, but we want to see more boats out on the water as the weather warms. Ken Voight represented CBYC in the predicted log races, and he is leading the way. It would be nice to get another boat or two, which would add points to our “Club of the Year” efforts. The Eli Ruben Memorial Regatta had almost 70 boats. Thanks go to Aaron Feves for chairing and being PRO, and also thanks to Cameron Feves for running the Green Fleet races. Memorial Day weekend we hosted the Around Catalina to Dana Point Race, 6 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA The Lighthouse, July 2016 and we thank Dave Moore for chairing that event. PRO Steve McJones and chairman M’Liz Callender did a great job hosting the Laser PCCs. The Cruise to Avalon was hosted by the Embrees with fourteen boats having a great time. The Cherry Cove Cruise was hosted by Zachary and Carina Tinker aboard Jim and Claudia Clark’s boat, and although the number of boats was small, a great time was had by all. Junior Staff Commodore Burch said that traditionally we do not have a June General Meeting because of Lobster Feast. Although Lobster Feast has been canceled, it was moved and seconded that we do not have a June 2016 General Meeting. This motion passed. Vice Commodore Callender thanked Mark Fogle for the many hours he has devoted to needed repairs. She discussed house expenses and reported that five doors have been replaced under budget. There has been a change in the security system contract saving $600 annually. Unfortunately, the water heater failed and there was a $6700 unbudgeted repair required. The walk-in fridge/freezer has deteriorated and something has to be done right away. She has one proposal at $23,750, but there are many unknown factors. It was moved and seconded that we be allowed to spend up to $60K for replacement or repairs to the walk-in fridge/freezer. The motion passed. She also received a proposal for an upgrade for a bar camera with buzzer, which is also unbudgeted. The proposal was $3720 for three cameras, one at the main door and two on north side of the building. Vice Commodore Callender is doing some reimaging in the bar. She has had individual meetings with bar staff concerning ABC compliance. Responsible Beverage Seminars are scheduled in the near future for attendance by bar staff, office staff and club members that volunteer in the bar. She is going to work on part time bartender job descriptions. She plans to develop a more detailed pricing sheet and look into the POS system. Chef David will be offering Bar Food for the month of June. July 4th with be a “Stay at Home Cruise.” She also stated we have a new office staff member: Sarin Keshishian. Treasurer Feves stated that if we keep to the budget as proposed we are slightly ahead of plan. He has no objection over the necessary $60K for the fridge/freezer, as it is necessary and must be done now. We will just have to agree to save less this year. In regard to the budget, he did say the wages are behind because of the over-time hours required by the staff. For Father’s Day we will host a dinner rather than a brunch, and there will be a choice of Swordfish (or Halibut) or a Filet. Junior Staff Commodore Burch will be guest chef and we will be treated to his famous crème brulee. There being no further business before the regular board meeting the meeting was adjourned at 20:10 hours. We had the Avalon Mid-Week Cruise and the Isthmus Theme Cruise. Also, we weren’t able to comment on the Cherry Cove Cruise in May, because at the time of the Lighthouse deadline, we had yet to go. Though the Cherry Cove Cruise was small (5 boats and one couple on the Express), it was a blast. An Associate Member couple, Zack and Carina Tinker were our hosts, hopping a ride on the Clark’s boat. Great cruise and thank you, to the Tinkers! What a wonderful addition to our club these two people are! Next, we had the Avalon Mid-Week. No specifics were offered to me; makes me wonder, hmmm? The Isthmus Theme Cruise this year was “The BVI Cruise… Catalina Style.” With BVI as an clearly live in a different universe because it is impossible to make a small 60-amp hour battery last for days. But as the conversation continues, I find that these boats use the battery to power the lights and only the lights. And if they want to keep their food fresh, they use ice. AC power? Why? When they cruise, they desire quiet and simplicity; an escape from electronics, media, and the like. Therefore, it seems it is not a question of how much power, but of comfort. The boater mentioned above defines comfort as leaving the world’s problems behind and to keep the boat’s systems as simple as possible. But, what if you don’t want to “detach” and need all the comforts of a home? Now we are looking at power, and we are talking real POWER; power for a TV, internet access, refrigerators, freezer, hot and cold running water, the ability to make more and more water, hair dryer, curling irons, etc., etc., etc. I can almost feel the hum of current coursing through the wires. On these boats, a 60-amp hour battery would be shriveled to size of a grape by the time the breaker switch hit the “on” position. When it comes to power needed to be comfortable, our club runs the full breadth of the spectrum. On one extreme, a single AA battery may be sufficient, and on the other extreme, we are Our hosts! acronym for Brief Vacation at the Isthmus. As it was hosted by the Koehlers and the Elpers, one would expect that kind of cleverness. We had 15 boats, BBQ’s, “Painkillers” in abundance, kite flying, and more. The Cruisers all send many thanks to the hosts for putting on a wonderful cruise! Cruising topic of the month… how much power is enough and to invert or not to invert? That’s easy; there is never ever enough stinking power on a boat! Oh, but au contraire, I was corrected that many a boat have plenty of power with just one small battery. What? Are you kidding? I suck down a 4D 110 amp hour battery in a day. These boat owners looking at installing a nuclear power plant on board. So… back to the original question… how much power is enough and do we need inverters? This is only a question the individual boater can answer. So, there! The boats made their way over, with most members made it to shore smoothly and pulled the boats onto the beach. The group walked up the hill to see the lovely view and enjoy some snacks. Later, everyone combed the beach for sand dollars, coffee bean shells, sea glass and other gems. That evening, the Richards welcomed club members onto their yacht to enjoy cocktails and appetizers including homemade guacamole, fruit, cheese and the famous “Painkiller” cocktail. The Holcombs, Clarks, Zinns, Tinkers, Heindels and McJones/Callender families joined the fun. Members shared stories from past Hosts… Zack and Carina Tinker arriving on Friday afternoon. Jim and Claudia Clark generously welcomed the Tinkers onto their boat for the weekend. The Holcombs, who ferried over, invited some members to visit the Isthmus Yacht Club Friday afternoon. We recognize that having you here and close makes CBYC a better place. We regularly see and enjoy watching you share your passion for boating with family, friends, and our community in general. CBYC envisions itself as an active club with a variety of ways to participate in boating in general. Active racing, cruising, social, safety, learning, sharing, and community programs are all important facets of what we do. Thank you for your individual sacrifices and enormous acts of volunteerism. S/C John O’Connor Acting Chair, Marina Management Committee Cal 20s Show Their Stuff in CBYC’s Wet Wednesday Races The Cal 20 season has really ramped up and on a couple of Wet Wednesdays in June, we had 10 boats on the starting line. Gary Major’s boat, Godzilla, came out for the first time and sprayed some fire on the fleet with the second-place finish right out of the box. Several more 20’s are in preparation to head out soon and the fleet will continue to see intensified competition. The racing continues to be very close and on one Wednesday there were four boats side by side heading into leeward mark--needless to say, things got exciting very quickly. We also got a lesson from Mike Burch on how to handle a Cal 20 without a rudder. His rudder popped out while going through a large wake causing damage to one of the gudgeons, thereby making the rudder unusable and it had to be brought aboard. Trimming the mainsail and jib just right, he was able to tack back and forth until help arrived--in this case it was the support of Zoltan Katinszky’s Farr 40, White Knight, which is fitting since Zoltan is a partner in that particular 20. With the greater number of Cal 20s on the race course, we are now looking at a need for a few more crew to participate. Certainly if somebody is looking to crew aboard a boat then please let us know and we would love to get you out in the great competition--plus it is absolutely one of the best ways to increase your racing skills rapidly. We were “volunteers”. Our duty there, among other things, was to “guard” the Wild Goose - John Wayne’s converted military yacht. The boat is the wooden yacht, Valentine, a Kettenberg 43 (K43), a 43’ sloop, that belonged to Peggy Slater, a long time member of CBYC. Unfortunately, Peggy passed away in 1990, but her legacy lives on. She was a renowned lady sailor and yacht broker. Peggy extensively raced and cruised her own boats and others. She won more than 100 trophies in her yacht-racing career. She was famous for being the skipper, and/or sailing master, on small and large sailing yachts on coastal and ocean races throughout the world. I had the pleasure of being a crewmember on several of the yachts she raced or cruised, including in the1965 Acapulco Race aboard Sea Smoke, a K50, as navigator (before GPS). All of the boats she owned, for the most part, were Kettenberg built, wood, painted red and named Valentine. What a wonderful Father’s Day Supper! Thank you to Mike Burch and Norm Tuck for putting on an incredible surf and turf dinner for all the CBYC Dads. Of course it was a sell out, and with all the volunteer dinners included, they served over 120 people. Thank you to all the people who made this event memorable: Tricia Tuck, Kerry Burch, Kristen Burch, Joe Burch, Kyle Burch, Sean Wilson (Kristen’s Boyfriend), Linda Wilson-Gray, Lynda Louden, Christy Nichols, Nancy Lund, Suzanne Nichol, Steve and Laurie Holmstrom, and Jon Niemann. Our next event is “4 Days of the 4th of July” at CBYC. The club has music, food and fun planned from July 1st through July 4th. Activities include a “Mini Cruise to Britain” (thank you Cheryl and Steve Thomas), dancing to the Chuck Alvarez Band (thank you Steve Jost), Dinghy Poker Run (thank you Foxes and Simmons), and a SailCube “Non-Regatta” (thank you Bryan Dair and Guizlos). And last but not least, a big thank you to S/C Pam Meisel for agreeing to oversee the club decorations. The former Navy Days Los Angeles is being reformulated as “U.S. Navy Fleet Week,” and CBYC will play a role that has yet to be finalized, but will include invitations for the troops to join us at the clubhouse for burgers, tacos and discounted drinks. We may even see sailors out on Wet Wednesday, and there is a possibility of an organized celebration afloat to view the visiting ships waterside. Kevin McCloskey and Karen Perrault are working with the Port of Los Angeles and generous CBYC members to finalize the events. If you want to be involved, contact Kevin or Karen, (or Joy Jacot; rumor is, she is going to be a big help). Lots of talk about bar parties. We want to have another “Games and Grub Night,” but we are having trouble scheduling it. In July, the CBYC Galley will be serving bar food every Saturday and Sunday, so the “grub” part will be handled. Perhaps at the next meeting we will find a date. Come to our next meeting, we are going to plan more bar parties. We meet once a month, for only one hour, to plan upcoming events and brainstorm new ideas. In July, the Social Committee will meet the first Thursday of the month, July 7th, at 6 p.m. M’Liz Callender, Vice Commodore CBYC Book Club We meet the first Wednesday of each month at 5:15 p.m. in the Member’s Lounge Join us for great conversation over a glass of wine July 6 “Brooklyn” by Colm Toibin August 3 “Delicious” by Ruth Reichl 22 Visit us online at cbyc.org | Copyright 2016 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA The Lighthouse, July 2016 MEMBERS IN PROCESS Please introduce yourself to our MIPs if you see them around the club.
