Since its inspection in 2005 the chapter was really enthusiastic in various academic activities. At present the chapter has 23 members. The chapter members are currently working in the areas of Nanophosphors and Quantum wells, Transparent Thin Film Transistors, Oxide Phosphors and Thin Film Electroluminescent Devices, Hydrothermal Growth of Nanoparticles, Spintronics, Transparent Conducting Oxides, Plasma studies, Ferroelectric Random Access Memories, Holography and Conducting Polymers. All the members of the chapter are actively participating in the programs organized by the chapter and Department of Physics. Current year the following activities were carried out by the SPIE CUSAT student chapter. Academic Training The SPIE-CUSAT Student Chapter in association with Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology conducted Academic Training for Graduate/Post graduate Students of various institutions in Kerala. Ten students have completed their academic projects in the areas of Optoelectronic Devices, Non-linear Optics and Thin films for bio medical applications. . The six day workshop provided an opportunity to students to interact with the faculty members, listen to new developments in scientific fields and also witness some of the advanced experiments being carried-out in the research laboratories of the department of Physics. The students also to gain hands on experience on various core experiments in Physics including the telescope making. Participants of Scope and Awareness program 2013 Lectures Prof. C. Vijayan, (Indian Institute of Technology, Madras) gave a lecture on Nanophotonics :A Materials Perspective on 4th October 2013 under SPIE Visiting Lecturer Program Talk by Prof. C. Vijayan at Physics Department Auditorium, CUSAT Other Lectures Chapter conducted lectures on various research topics. He is the winner of SPIE officer travel grant for the year 2014. He also participated in the Optics and Photonics 2014 conference held at San Diego during 17th to 21st of August 2014. Mr. Shijeesh Methattel Raman presented posters entitled “Comparative study of degradation and trap density-of-states of p type and n type organic semiconductors” & “Nonlinear properties of IGZO thin films prepared by RF magnetron sputtering” in Photonics 2014. Mr. Shijeesh Methattel Raman with SPIE Student Activities Coordinator Tasha Chicovsky and with invited Professors from Spain at the SPIE Optics and Photonics 2014 conference. Future Programs Monthly lecture programs which helps a lot to the scholarly improvement of research and post graduate students will be continued Our chapter in association with Department of Physics and Centre of advanced materials, CUSAT will organize a 3 day outreach programme “EXPLORER ’15”. Students, faculty members and other participants from Kerala will be given opportunity to visit research laboratories and to witness top class research, new advancements in research fields and research atmosphere. There will be interactive sessions with researchers. International year of light: setting demo experiments, posters and exhibitors and students of near by schools will be invited to participate during the week end. SPIE Discussion forum-Monthly informal discussion on various current research topics by the students Physics- Scope and Awareness will be conducted in April 2015.
