Highways
ast year, my friend Ryan (that’s my name,
too) was bequeathed a 1991 Winnebago
Warrior. The 25-foot Class C motorhome was
passed down from his uncle, who was upgrading to a new Class A.
As a longtime friend and former Good Sam
Club intern, Ryan knew all about our family’s
RVing history. With this in mind, he wanted to
know if my dog, Beau, and I would join him on
a monthlong surf adventure to Puerto
Escondido on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Of
course, we’d be traveling by Winnebago.
At first I wasn’t so sure about Mexico, but I
did know from experience that motorhomes
are the right travel vehicle for my generation.
Our technology-dependent lives come to a
standstill without things like electricity, the
Internet and e-mail, and
motorhomes give you all of
those options while traveling.
The possibilities for the techsavvy traveler seemed limitless. But in the end, we
packed light, bringing just a
wireless laptop and a Sirius
satellite radio receiver.
While Ryan worried about
navigating Baja’s roads by RV,
I had my own trepidations. I
live in San Diego, and our
local news frequently covers horrific stories
coming out of Tijuana. After surfing websites
like www.rversonline.com and reading about
other RVers’ experiences, I felt better about the
trip. The people I chatted with raved about the
country and lamented the bad rap Mexico gets.
July finally rolled around, and on a beautiful
Sunday morning we ventured south. Within
minutes of crossing into Tijuana, one of our
worst fears became reality: the onramp to the
highway going south was closed, and we were
funneled into the downtown area of the most
dangerous border town in Mexico.
Thankfully, a helpful motorist led us for 10
L
minutes through some of Tijuana’s rougher
neighborhoods until we reached the highway.
The experience of a local going the extra mile to
help a couple of confused gringos would repeat
itself over and over throughout the trip. At various points of the journey, local police, shopkeepers, Mexican campers and even a doctor all
stopped to help us with directions, advice and
recommendations for everything from delicious seafood to the best campgrounds.
The other concern I had was the military
checkpoints, spaced every hundred miles or so
along the major highways. Fortunately, we
found the Mexican army’s Achilles’ heel: a 75pound boxer. Whenever soldiers stopped us to
search the RV, my dog Beau’s big brown head
would rise up from between the front seats. I
answered the inevitable “Es muerda?” (“Does it
bite?”) with “Solo quando lo dego” (“Only when
told”), and we were always waved through
speedily. In Mexico, a well-trained dog is worth
its weight in gold.
All told, we covered 4,500 miles, camped in
15 beach towns and ate more than 200 tacos.
We surfed nine different breaks, visited every
major tourist resort on the Pacific coast and
drove through 10 of Mexico’s 31 states. There
are some other interesting numbers I could put
out there, but some readers (including my
mom) might get upset.
We never met a disagreeable local or had
run-ins with bandits. Internet was accessible at
or near every campground we visited, and our
cell phones worked in every city with a population over 5,000. We also had AC all but four
nights, a bonus in the off-season when temperatures hovered around 100 degrees Fahrenheit
during the day and 85 degrees at night.
It seems inevitable that the increasing numbers of young, affluent and tech-savvy travelers
will catch on to RVing and take their jobs and
other interests on the road. But whatever your
age, the ability to stay connected while traveling to exotic places is extremely appealing.

Hola, Good Sam
the August issue of Highways
here at Paa Mul RV Park on the Mexican
Caribbean coast, just south of Playa del Carmen. I had to smile when I read Sue Bray’s
commentary, “Passing on the Travel Gene,” in
which she expresses concern about her son
Ryan’s RV trip to Mexico.
So far, my husband and I, our three-year-old
son and our dog and cat have journeyed 1,700
miles through Mexico in a 1999 Dodge Ram
2500 diesel towing a 35-foot Carriage Cameo
bunkhouse fifth wheel loaded with kayaks,
bicycles, scuba gear and a moped. This is our
second long RV trip in Mexico, and we love it.
We’ve encountered few problems and always
find that people are friendly and helpful,
despite our limited command of Spanish.
Big rigs are a curiosity down here. One
morning, while camping north of Veracruz, I
opened our door to find an admiring Mexican
family videotaping our RV.
I encourage all Good Sam members to take
the plunge and try a trip to Mexico. Of course,
I JUST RECEIVED
basic safety rules apply. Don’t drive at night,
maintain slow speeds and always overestimate
the time it’ll take to reach your destination as
road signs can be confusing and road conditions can vary greatly. By the way, diesel is still
just over $2 a gallon down here.
Betsy Amy-Vogt, PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO
Much to his mom’s relief, Ryan Bray has
returned from his south-of-the-border RV trip in
one piece. He recounts his surf-and-sun-filled
adventures on page six of this issue.—Editors

Highways later published several
articles about Old Fella. As a result,
many great things have happened to

TO THE
White House
O
n November 4, RVers will be among
the millions of voters lining up at
the polls to choose the next U.S. president. Where do Republican John McCain
and Democrat Barack Obama stand on
the issues that concern Good Sam Club
members? We studied the candidates’
voting records and positions on key
national issues related to the RV lifestyle
and offer the following information:
THE
Issue Public Lands
Both candidates have weighed in on the
National Park Service’s Centennial Initiative, aimed at preserving and enhancing
our public lands. The candidates have
also taken positions on uses of public
lands for forestry and energy.
★McCain has criticized “the shameful
backlog of vital maintenance and park
protection projects” and suppor ts
establishing a Centennial Fund to help
operate the parks. McCain also has
encouraged state and local officials to
implement open-space initiatives and
establish green corridors. He supports
land- and water-conservation funds that
emphasize recreation and protection of
wildlife areas.
★Obama seeks to reverse many Bushadministration executive orders and
regulations related to the environment,
including $2 billion in cuts to conservation programs. He also plans to
increase funding for national parks and
wildlife refuges and opposes energy
exploration in the Arctic National Wild-
Where the candidates stand on RV-related issues
life Refuge. He’s opposed to further
road development on Forest Service
lands and wants to ensure that by
2016 the National Park System will
have the resources needed to meet
maintenance and operational needs.
THE
Issue Real ID Act
The Real ID Act, signed into law in
2005, mandates that states provide
verification of individuals’ identities
when renewing state-issued ID cards or
driver’s licenses. States have until
2010 to comply. In addition to proving
U.S. citizenship, those who renew or
apply for state-issued cards will also
need to provide proof of their principal
address, usually in the form of a utility
bill. Obviously, full-time RVers won’t be
able to produce this documentation.
Good Sam membership alone includes
70,000 full-time RVers, a fraction of the
total full-timer population.
★ McCain supports full implementation of the Real ID Act but says he’ll
allow states time to prepare.
★Obama says he still doesn’t support
the Real ID Act because it’s an unfunded mandate and not enough work has
been done with the states to help
them implement the program.
THE
Issue Corporate Average Fuel Economy
In 2007 President Bush signed legislation that requires the nation’s new cars
and light trucks to meet a new standard
of 35 mpg by 2020. The mpg standard
for medium- and heavy-duty trucks—
vehicles used for towing travel trailers
by RVers—still hasn’t been set.
★ Although McCain teamed with
Democratic Senator John Kerry in 2002
on a bill to raise CAFE standards to 36
mpg by 2015, he currently supports
enforcing existing CAFE standards. In
2005, McCain voted against an amendment that would have mandated
phased increases in fuel standards.
★ Obama proposes increasing fueleconomy standards 4 percent a year
while providing $4 billion for domestic
automakers to retool their facilities in
North America to produce these vehicles. Last year he supported the Fuel
Economy Reform Act, which would have
allowed manufacturers to meet different efficiency targets based on their
fleet mix of cars and light trucks.
THE
Issue Civil Infrastructure
The American Society of Civil Engineers
estimates that $1.6 trillion is needed in
the next five years to maintain the adequacy of existing public infrastructure
and repair America’s highways, roads
and bridges.
★In 2004, McCain voted for an amendment to reduce the funding of the Transportation Equity Act from $318 billion to
$256 billion. He has stated that fund-

ing for transportation infrastructure and
transportation safety is of enormous
importance but must be done in a fiscally responsible manner.
★ Obama called for a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank that
would put $60 billion over 10 years in a
host of projects, including highway and
bridge building and repair.
THE
Issue Fuel Prices
High gas and diesel prices have impacted every facet of the U.S. economy.
Washington politicians have floated a
variety of solutions including stepping
up research for alternative fuels,
increasing domestic drilling and implementing a gas-tax holiday.
★McCain has committed to expanding
domestic oil exploration and drilling on
the outer continental shelf. He has
challenged the U.S. automotive indus-

try to exceed its goal of making more
than 50 percent of new cars and light
trucks flexible-fuel vehicles by 2012
and wants to crack down on oil speculation. He opposed a windfall-profit tax
on oil companies and favored a gas-tax
holiday to temporarily lower fuel prices.
★ Obama called for a windfall-profits
tax on high oil-company profits and
plans to close energy-industry market
loopholes and increase transparency
to prevent traders from driving up
prices. He also envisions swapping oil
from the strategic petroleum reserve to
cut prices. He has opposed a gas-tax
holiday and has argued that the revenues take away from road-construction projects. He calls for reducing U.S.
oil consumption by at least 35 percent,
or 10 million barrels a day, by 2030.
THE
Issue The Environment
Both candidates have said they’ll take
steps to help reduce global warming.
And while the debate over the extent
and cause of global warming rages on,
the candidates have offered solutions to
reduce U.S. emissions of carbon and
other so-called greenhouse gases.
★ McCain has issued a Clean Car
Challenge that would give a $5,000 tax
credit for each customer who buys a
zero-carbon-emissions car. For other
vehicles, a graduated tax credit would
apply so that the lower the carbon emissions, the higher the tax credit. He also
has proposed a $300 million prize
awarded for the development of a battery package that has the size, capacity,
cost and power to leapfrog commercially
available plug-in hybrids or electric cars.
★Obama calls for spending $150 billion to develop a variety of clean-energy
technologies, including advanced cleanburning biofuels for vehicles. He wants
to establish a national low-carbon fuel
standard to cut carbon in vehicle fuels
by 10 percent by 2020.—JOHN SULLAWAY

THE RALLY
ROAD REPORT
Deter ID Thieves
MAINTAIN YOUR GOOD NAME WITH
GOOD SAM IDENTITY PROTECTION
Every day, ID thieves steal people’s motor vehicle information, bank and creditcard data and medical records. Crooks plunder bank accounts, run up bills in
another person’s name and use someone else’s insurance or driver’s license.
Beat the scammers by enrolling in an identity-theft protection and alerting service.
A good service will provide 24/7 credit monitoring, Internet monitoring of known illegal chat rooms that trade personal information and lost-wallet protection, allowing
you to cancel all of your credit card accounts with a single phone call. In addition,
your identity-theft protection service should provide you with access to a number of
important reports, including credit reports and credit scores, as well as your motorvehicle records and medical-information-bureau records.
If your identity is ever compromised, you’ll need a fraud-resolution specialist to
help restore your good name. Experts recommend a plan that provides at least
$10,000 in identity-theft insurance to help defray certain costs in ID restoration
(see www.goodsamclub.com/highways for more tips on protecting against ID theft).
Good Sam Identity Protection Plus, powered by Privacy Guard, a leader in identity protection and theft prevention, is now available to Good Sam members for
$99 a year and includes all of the features outlined above.

Join us in New Mexico to have fun, meet friends and make history
ood Sam Club members who participated in the
big group dance during the 2008 Rally in Perry,
Georgia, deserve a hearty pat on the back. Guinness
World Records of England announced that the 1,128
couples who cut the rug during the March event’s Rally
Prom Night successfully surpassed the existing mark
for “Most Couples Dancing.”
Now it’s time to set a new record for the 2009 Rally,
April 17 through 20 in Albuquerque. Join fellow Rally
guests at Expo New Mexico in an effort to break the world
mark for the most people wearing balloon hats, a fitting
salute to the Hot-Air Balloon Capital of the World.
When you’re not making history with fellow club
members, check out the Rally’s RV displays, lifestyle
seminars, tours to nearby attractions, nightly entertainment and activities that include a geocache contest, a
dog show and a golf tournament.

Know where to pull off the interstate
RVers often have to guess what they’ll find at the end of highway off-ramps. With Trailer Life Books’ 2009 Exit Now Interstate
Exit Directory, travelers can get the scoop on the services and
attractions that await them off the exits of every U.S. interstate.
Organized by interstate, the spiral-bound guide has 600 pages
filled with color-coded listings of travel centers, malls, retail outlets, restaurants, gas stations, RV-service centers and dump stations in close proximity to exits. Information about hospitals,
pharmacies, other medical services and the highway patrol helps
travelers know where to turn in case of an emergency. Animal
owners will appreciate the listings of pet-friendly locations.
Exit Now also warns drivers of steep grades, highways converging together, long stretches of interstate without gas stations and exits located on the left-hand side of the highway.

Because one of my problems is poor

20 Highways
JOE: Southern California is earthquake coun-
try, and in July we had a doozy that registered
a magnitude of 5.4. Our two-story house
rocked and rolled for between 15 and 20 seconds. Windows rattled, hanging lamps swung
back and forth, the whole house crackled and
groaned, and then it was over. The only
sounds were a couple of car alarms and a few
barking dogs. I made a quick damage assessment and found a short hairline crack in the
stucco next to an upstairs window, and, as
always happens during earthquakes, a good
number of pictures were askew.
When I turned on the television, the
news folks were still trying to figure out
what happened. It didn’t take more
than a few minutes, though, before
anchors were reporting that the earthquake was felt as far away as Las Vegas,
some 300 miles to the east.
Later reports indicated that losses
throughout the earthquake area were
limited to a few cases of minor structural damage, some broken windows, a few
broken water mains and items that fell
from store shelves.
One ancient brick
building dropped a
load of bricks into
an alley.
VICKI: I joined the tens
of thousands of others
who were trying to contact family and friends to
see if they were OK. Our
collective efforts overwhelmed the cell-phone networks, and an
hour passed before I could place a cell-phone
call. The landline phones also were jammed
but handled the load better than the cell systems. In lieu of calling, I tried using my cell
phone to send a text message. It worked!
I watched a TV reporter interview an emergency room doctor who said that the majority
of injuries would be caused by panic. People
fall, or even get trampled by others, while trying to run out of buildings. Or they run into
the street and get hit by a car. Or they try to exit
through a glass doorway just as it shatters. As it
turned out, there were no serious injuries related to the earthquake.
JOE: California has multiple earthquakes
every day, but most of them are so slight we
don’t feel them. A quake with a magnitude of
3.5 or more can be felt near the epicenter. A
temblor that reaches 4.0 or higher will get on
the news, and anything from 5.0 on up is a
conversation piece for at least two days
(“Where were you when it hit?”). Shakers that
rate 6.0 do a lot of damage. And then there’s
the Big One: a 7-pointer like the one that leveled San Francisco 102 years ago. Here in
California, it’s just a matter of time.
We’re told to seek shelter from falling
objects when an earthquake hits. Get under a
solid desk or table or stand in a doorway.
Makes sense, but during the four or five major
earthquakes I’ve experienced, I haven’t had
the opportunity to do that.
We’ve experienced only
one earthquake in our
RV. At first, we thought
a prankster was jumping
on our hitch receiver.
Earthquakes aren’t like hurricanes or tornadoes. They don’t give you any warning they’re
coming. The first second or two of an earthquake is kind of like the mild rumbling of a
heavy truck passing by. It gets your attention.
Then the real shaking begins, slowly at first
with a few gentle movements. By the time
your mind has finished asking “what the heck

is that?” you’re rockin’ and rollin’.
The intensity and duration depends
upon a lot of factors. It could be over
before you realize what hit you—most
last only a few seconds. Or it could go
on for minutes. Typically, the longer it
lasts, the more violent the shaking.
Most of our earthquakes have been
over before I had the opportunity to
move to a protected spot. I, like most
people, just ride it out and hope it ends
quickly. Actually, I kind of enjoy the
adrenaline rush.
VICKI: We’ve experienced only one
earthquake while in our RV. It was a
magnitude 5-plus. At first, we thought
a prankster was jumping on our
motorhome’s hitch receiver. The suspension handled the earthquake like it
handles the highway—it just amounted
to a little swaying.
The most important thing you can
do during an earthquake is to keep
your cool. Know that it’ll be over
quickly. And keep in mind that,
depending on where you are, the danger comes from shattering windows
and falling objects like ceiling fans and
fixtures, and from tall pieces of furniture tipping over. Keep your cool, protect your head, and, if you’re like Joe,
enjoy the ride.

the latter activity I’m describing

readily available in most large grocery stores.
Look for tightly closed, uncracked shells. Like all
shellfish, they should be alive just before they’re
cooked, and to be safe, you should consume
them on the day they’re purchased.
Some people say that months with
an “R” in their name—September
to April—are the in-season for
mussels, but the reality is that
commercially available mussels are
safe to eat year-round.
Mussels can be prepared countless
ways, but my favorite method is a traditional French recipe from Provence
that requires little more than a large pot, a
few simple ingredients and 20 minutes of
your time. The fun thing about this dish is
that, like all shellfish-based meals, the most efficient way to eat it is with your fingers and a
fresh baguette to sop up the sweet juices. No
workout, not even the gizmos advertised on
late-night TV, can guarantee such instantly
gratifying results.
1 pound mussels, in their shells
2 tablespoons butter
2 shallots, minced
1 red bell pepper, cored and seeded, diced into 1⁄4-inch pieces
1 bulb fennel, trimmed, cored and diced into 1⁄4-inch pieces. Reserve fronds.
1
/2 cup heavy cream
2 ounces Pernod (a French licorice-based liqueur) or Sambuca or ouzo
1 baguette French bread
Discard any cracked or opened mussels (unless they close when tapped). Pull off their
“beards” and scrub the shells with an abrasive sponge.
In a heavy medium-size pot over medium-high heat, melt butter and then sauté shallots, red
pepper and fennel for about four minutes or until shallots and fennel are translucent.
Stir in cream and Pernod and let reduce for two minutes. Add mussels. Cover pot.
Cook for approximately three minutes or until all mussels have opened.
Pour all contents into a large serving bowl. Discard any mussels that haven’t opened.
Garnish with a handful of fennel fronds and serve immediately with bread.

AS HEARD ON PAUL HARVEY NEWS
New advanced portable heater can
cut your heating bill up to 50%
Heats a large room in minutes with even
heat wall to wall and floor to ceiling
Does not get hot, cannot start a fire and
will not reduce humidity or oxygen
A new advanced quartz
infrared portable heater, the
EdenPURE ™ , can cut your
heating bills by up to 50%.
You have probably heard
about the remarkable EdenPURE™ as heard on Paul Harvey News and on television
features across the nation.
The EdenPURE™ can pay
for itself in a matter of
weeks and then start putting
a great deal of extra money
in your pocket after that.
A major cause of residential fires in the United States
is portable heaters. But the
EdenPURE™ cannot cause a
fire. That is because the
quartz infrared heating element never gets to a temperature that can ignite anything.
The outside of the EdenPURE ™ only gets warm to
the touch so that it will not
burn children or pets. Pets
can sleep on it when it is operating without harm.
The advanced space-age
EdenPURE™ Quartz Infrared
Portable Heater also heats
the room evenly, wall-towall and floor-to-ceiling.
And, as you know, portable
heaters only heat an area a
few feet around the heater.
Unlike other heating
sources, the EdenPURE ™
cannot put poisonous carbon
monoxide into a room or any
type of fumes or any type of
harmful radiation.
Q. What is the origin of
this amazing heating element in the EdenPURE™?
A. This advanced heating
element was discovered accidentally by a man named
John Jones.
Q. What advantages does
infrared quartz tube heating
source have over other heating source products?
A. John Jones designed
his heating source around
the three most important
consumer benefits: economy, comfort, and safety.
In the EdenPURE ™ system, electricity is used to generate infrared light which, in
turn, creates a very safe heat.
Go To:
Never be cold again
Cannot start a fire; a child or animal
can touch or sit on it without harm
How it works:
Heats floor to the
same temperature
as ceiling.
CUTAWAY VIEW
1. Electricity ignites powerful
quartz infrared lamp.
2. The quartz infrared lamp without
combustion gently warms the
patented cured copper tubes.
3. The heat from the copper tubing rides the
humidity in the room and provides moist,
soft heat ceiling to floor, wall to wall without reducing oxygen or humidity.
SPECIAL READER’S DISCOUNT COUPON
After a great deal of research and development,
very efficient infrared heat
chambers were developed
that utilize three unique
patented solid copper heat
exchangers in one EdenPURE™ heater.
Q. How can a person cut
their heating bill by up to
50% with the EdenPURE™?
A. The EdenPURE™ will
heat a room in minutes.
Therefore, you can turn the
heat down in your house to as
low as 50 degrees, but the
room you are occupying,
which has the EdenPURE™,
will be warm and comfortable. The EdenPURE ™ is
portable. When you move to
another room, it will quickly
heat that room also. This can
drastically cut heating bills, in
some instances, by up to 50%.
The EdenPURE ™ comes
in 2 models. GEN3 Model
500 heats a room up to 300
square feet and GEN3 Model
1000 heats a room up to
1,000 square feet.
End of interview.
The EdenPURE ™ will
pay for itself in weeks. It will
put a great deal of extra money in a users pocket. Because
of today’s spiraling gas, oil,
propane, and other energy
costs, the EdenPURE™ will
provide even greater savings
as the time goes by.

PSI Rule of Thumb
I have a Keystone Cougar fifth wheel and recently purchased new tires. The guy
at the tire store put 85 psi in the tires, as that’s the maximum tire pressure on
the sidewall of the tire. I recently read that the tire pressure stamped on the sidewall is the maximum at maximum load and shouldn’t be used as the standard.
Is there a rule of thumb for what tire pressure should be used depending on load

such as a percentage of what’s on the sidewall?
Also, I plan on going to some mountainous
areas of the country, say, 8,000 feet and higher
in elevation. Will I have to reduce the tire pressure at those higher elevations if I plan to be
there only a week or so and, if so, by how much?
Mike Kassinger, MILTON , FLORIDA
BOB: The value on the sidewall of your tire is
the minimum air pressure needed to handle the
maximum weight specified by the manufacturer. It’s best to weigh each wheel individually so
that you’ll know how much each tire is carrying, and then that figure can be compared with
the weight tables provided by the tire manufacturer. Unless you know how much weight each
tire is carrying, you should go with the maximum pressure (cold) stamped on the sidewall
of the tire. Keep in mind that if you overload
your rig, you may still be overloading the tires,
even though they are pressured up to 85 psi.
Technically, air pressure in the tires changes
with altitude, but you don’t need to adjust pressure when traveling in higher elevations for
short periods of time unless you check your tire
pressure daily, as prescribed by good maintenance practices. Never adjust air pressure below
the value specified on the sidewall without
knowing the weights and comparing them with
the tire manufacturer’s loading tables.
Fixing Decals
I have a 2004 Montana fifth wheel with a lot
of decals on the fiberglass exterior. During the
last washing, I noticed that the decal edges
seemed to be curling. It was especially noticeable on the front cap. I checked, and replacement seems the only option. I was hoping that
you have some alternative. The curling is just
at the edge, as of now, but will probably
migrate as time goes by.
James D. Casey, DECATUR , ALABAMA
BOB: Once the decals start curling and the
24 Highways
edges become brittle, there’s not much you can
do. The most cost-effective process is to remove
the old vinyl (carefully using a heat gun and
adhesive remover designed for this type of material) and replace with new vinyl. Check with your
dealer for availability from the manufacturer, but
don’t be shocked if the pattern originally used on
your motorhome is no longer in stock. Many
manufacturers hold on to the decals for only a
couple of years beyond the model date.
You might be able to have a graphics company specializing in signs make new decals for
you, but you’ll need to provide a pattern. Of
course, you can also have new graphics painted
on, which will be very expensive. The latter fix
will last the longest.
Fading Decals
I wax my 2002 Bounder at least three times a
year, and the decals are fading. Is there anything on the market that could revitalize them?
Mike Sanford, TUCSON , ARIZONA
BOB: That’s part of the problem, Mike. All that
waxing creates a build-up on the surface of the
decals. As the wax discolors, it looks like the
decals have faded. You can try a wax remover to
remove the faded look, but your decals may be
too far gone. If you have some success with the
wax remover, then try using a vinyl restorer. No
guarantees, but it’s worth a shot.
As always, try this in an inconspicuous spot
before proceeding with all the decals.
Cold Air Pressure
The recommended cold pressure on my tires is
41 psi. When hot, my tires run at 44 to 45 psi.
I’ve received advice to run at 41 psi, which
would then put me at 37 psi cold. I believe I
should stay with 41 psi cold. Do you agree?
Second question: What is the value of nitrogen versus air for tire inflation? Is the mixing of
the two of any concern?

Black Listed Cancer Treatment
Could Save Your Life
Baltimore, MD— As unbelievable as it
seems the key to stopping many cancers has
been around for over 30 years. Yet it has been
banned. Blocked. And kept out of your medicine cabinet by the very agency designed to protect your health—those with a vested interest.
In 1966, the senior oncologist at a prominent New York hospital rocked the medical
world when he developed a serum that
“shrank cancer tumors!” 90 minutes later
they were gone... Headlines hit every major
paper around the world. Scientists and
researchers applauded. Time and again this
life saving treatment worked miracles, but
those with a vested interest ignored the
research and hope he brought and shut
him down.
You read that right. He was not only
shut down—but also forced out of the country where others benefited from his discovery. That was over 39 years ago. How many
other treatments have they been allowed to
hide? Just as in the case of Dr. Burton’s miracle serum these too go unmentioned.
Two-Nutrient Cancer Breakthrough...
Decades ago, European research scientist Dr. Johanna Budwig, a six-time Nobel
Award nominee, discovered a totally natural
formula that not only protects against the
development of cancer, but people all over
the world who have been diagnosed with
incurable cancer and sent home to die have
actually benefited from her research—and
now lead normal lives.
After 30 years of study, Dr. Budwig discovered that the blood of seriously ill cancer
patients was deficient in certain substances
and nutrients. Yet, healthy blood always contained these ingredients. It was the lack of
these nutrients that allowed cancer cells to
grow wild and out of control.
By simply eating a combination of two natural and delicious foods (found on page 134)
not only can cancer be prevented—but in case
after case it was actually healed! “Symptoms
of cancer, liver dysfunction, and diabetes were
completely alleviated.” Remarkably, what Dr.
Budwig discovered was a totally natural way
for eradicating cancer.
However, when she went to publish
these results so that everyone could benefit—she was blocked by manufacturers
with heavy financial stakes! For over 10
years now her methods have proved effective—yet she is denied publication—
blocked by the giants who don’t want you
to read her words.
What’s more, the world is full of expert
minds like Dr. Budwig who have pursued
cancer remedies and come up with remarkable natural formulas and diets that work
for hundreds and thousands of patients.
How to Fight Cancer & Win author William
Go To:
Fischer has studied these methods and
revealed their secrets for you—so that you
or someone you love may be spared the horrors of conventional cancer treatments.
As early as 1947, Virginia Livingston,
M.D., isolated a cancer-causing microbe. She
noted that every cancer sample analyzed
(whether human or other animal) contained it.
This microbe—a bacteria that is actually
in each of us from birth to death—multiplies and promotes cancer when the
immune system is weakened by disease,
stress, or poor nutrition. Worst of all, the
microbes secrete a special hormone protector
that short-circuits our body’s immune system—allowing the microbes to grow undetected for years. No wonder so many patients
are riddled with cancer by the time it is
detected. But there is hope even for them...

stop the formation of cancer cells and
shrink tumors.
They walked away from traditional
cancer treatments...and were healed!
Throughout the pages of How to Fight
Cancer & Win you’ll meet real people who
were diagnosed with cancer—suffered
through harsh conventional treatments—
turned their backs on so called modern
medicine—only to be miraculously healed
by natural means! Here is just a sampling of
what others have to say about the book.
“We purchased How to Fight Cancer & Win,
and immediately my husband started following
the recommended diet for his just diagnosed
colon cancer. He refused the surgery that our
doctors advised. Since following the regime
recommended in the book he has had no problems at all, cancer-wise. If not cured, we believe
the cancer has to be in remission.”
—Thelma B.
“I bought How to Fight Cancer & Win and
this has to be the greatest book I’ve ever read.
I have had astounding results from the easy to
understand knowledge found in this book.
My whole life has improved drastically and I
have done so much for many others. The
information goes far beyond the health thinking of today.”
—Hugh M.
“I can’t find adequate words to describe
my appreciation of your work in providing
How to Fight Cancer & Win. You had to do
an enormous amount of research to bring
this vast and most important knowledge to
your readers.
My doctor found two tumors on my

prostate with a high P.S.A. He scheduled a
time to surgically remove the prostate, but I
canceled the appointment. Instead I went on
the diet discussed in the book combined
with another supplement. Over the months
my P.S.A. has lowered until the last reading
was one point two.”
—Duncan M.
“In my 55 years as a Country Family
Physician, I have never read a more ‘down
to earth,’ practical resume of cancer prevention and treatments, than in this book. It
needs to be studied worldwide for the prevention of cancer by all researchers who are
looking for a cure.”
—Edward S.,M.D.
“As a cancer patient who has been battling lymphatic cancer on and off for almost
three years now, I was very pleased to stumble across How to Fight Cancer & Win. The
book was inspiring, well-written and
packed with useful information for any cancer patient looking to maximize his or her
chances for recovery.”
—Romany S.
“I’ve been incorporating Dr. Budwig’s
natural remedy into my diet and have told
others about it. Your book is very informative
and has information I’ve never heard about
before (and I’ve read many books on the cancer and nutrition link). Thanks for the wonderful information.”

BOB: You’re right, Rod. The value on
the sidewall of the tire is cold pressure.
Tire manufacturers take heat buildup
into consideration when recommending air pressure to handle specified
weights. If you reduce the air pressure,
you run the risk of underinflating tires.
According to the proponents, nitrogen molecules are larger than air, and
therefore the tires will not lose air as
rapidly. There’s also no moisture in
nitrogen, which is supposedly better for
the steel belts in the tire, and nitrogen is
said to run 25 percent cooler.
Nitrogen usually costs money; air is
usually free. Many tire stores are using
nitrogen as part of the tire-replacement
process and costs.
There’s no problem mixing air and
nitrogen.

should also check the pressure at each

leaking internally.
Smelly Freshwater
I had a service company sanitize the
freshwater tank of my 2005 Coachmen
Freelander. Now, when I run the hot
water, it has a clean, bleachy smell and
it comes out like soapy water. The cold
water is good and

Wandering Slide-Out
Carb Air Induction
The bedroom slide-out keeps creeping
out on our 2003 Sprinter 327FWRLS,
which we bought new in May of 2003.
The dealer replaced the pump, thinking
that was the problem, but the creep
persists.
I’ve made some stops and put them
on the top of the slide, but the slide
still comes out. I check it every couple
of days and retract it. I hope you can
help us with this problem.

I have an Airstream Land Yacht that’s
powered by a Chevy 454 engine and I
need to get better gas mileage. I’m
going to install some headers and I
also want to find out if there’s a kit that
will supply air to the carburetor. The air
reaching the carburetor now is the hot
air from within the doghouse.

the list of online resources you offered.

BOB: Jon, most technicians will check
for proper adjustment first. If the slide
is binding, it won’t close or open properly and could start creeping because it
wasn’t retracted fully. Once you estab26 Highways

I’ve read numerous articles in
In the old days,
we used to fabricate
our own air-induction

BOB: The service person probably used a
heavy concentration
of bleach when sanitizing the tank. Empty
the water tank and
water heater. Mix a 1/2
cup of baking soda
into a five-gallon bucket. Empty the
contents into the water tank and fill the
rest with freshwater. Fill the water
heater and run the faucets until the
baking-soda-and-water mixture flows
into the sinks and tub. Allow it to sit for
a few hours, and empty the water tank
and water heater. The bleach smell
should be gone.
Another LED Lead
The best part is, the project costs only
a few bucks, but don’t expect huge
gains. Look for an aftermarket filter kit,
which flows much better than stock.
BOB: In the old days, we used to fabricate our own air-induction system
using a length of dryer hose and a few
hose clamps. One end is attached to the
air-cleaner snorkel and the other situated somewhere in the front grille where
air will easily flow into the hose. It was
rather crude but it worked.
Highways concerning the water-heater
anode rod. I read that if you’re going to
store your RV for an extended period,
you should drain the water heater and
check the anode rod for sediment
deposits. I removed the drain plug,
looking for the anode rod, and there
was none. During my annual inspection
at Stier’s RV in Bakersfield, California, I
questioned the technician about this
rod, and he said my coach didn’t have
one, and it wasn’t necessary. He indicated that if I would simply drain my
water heater before extended storage,
it would be fine.
I want to educate myself as much as
possible so I can enjoy my coach. Is
this rod an aftermarket piece, and do I
need it? Even if I don’t need it, would it
give me added protection in keeping my
water heater functioning?
Rod Hall, BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA
BOB: If the water heater is made by
Atwood, then you don’t need an anode
rod. It’s best to drain the tank before
putting your coach into storage. Use a
clean-out tool attached to a garden hose
to dislodge any gunk in the tank. You’ll

Banks has been refining the answer to

By midyear 1974 we had answered the demand for truck and

Stinky Tank
I bought a 1995 Fleetwood Pace
Arrow two years ago. I don’t drive it
much because I live in it full time.
When the black tank gets half full, it
starts smelling very bad, like sulfur or
sewer. I don’t think the previous
owner ever used chemicals. I had it
pressure-washed out at 4,000 psi,
and then they ran a camera into the
tank. It showed that the tank was
completely clean.
I bought a good back-flush system
with the open/close lever on it, not a
cheap one. I back-flush it every two
weeks until all water is clear. But I still
can’t get rid of the smell once it gets
half full. Could it be permanently damaged from the previous owner not using
chemicals in it? Do you have any idea
how I can get rid of that odor?
Once it starts smelling, I go ahead
and fill it all the way, then I drain it. I do
this every time, and usually I refill it
and drain again. I put a new sewer-vent
cap on the roof with a screen that
turns with the wind, and that didn’t
help at all. I hope you have a solution
that doesn’t entail changing the holding tank!

once a tank becomes stinky because the
owner failed to use chemicals and/or
clean it out regularly, the bad smell
never goes away. You can try a commercial tank cleaner, but I have my doubts
whether it will work.
Make sure the toilet is clean and the
pipe leading to the holding tank is
clean. Sometimes the odor is caused by
a build-up on the pipe that immediately exits the toilet.
Replacing the tank is usually not that
bad of a process, as long as it’s in a normal place. Most dealers can order a
direct-replacement tank. It won’t be

Brake-Controller Breakthrough
Last year I purchased a GMC Sierra 2500HD truck from Kalawsky Pontiac Buick
GMC in Castlegar, British Columbia. The truck was fitted with an integrated brake

After hitching up my fifth wheel, I found that the integrated brake controller didn’t

a cost of $212.44.
I’ve had no luck getting a refund from GMC.
At no time was I informed by the dealership
that the integrated brake controller wouldn’t

for a reimbursement of $282 for the controller

Letting the Air Out
In December of 2005, I purchased a Lance
truck camper. At the time, I was informed that
there were several manufacturer-recommended
items that needed to be installed on my Ford
F-350 dually truck, including tie-downs, cab-over
struts and Air Lift Load Lifter springs. The dealer installed these items prior to my taking possession of the Lance unit.
In September of 2007, I was touring in
Ontario, Canada, in the truck camper. While
leaving Algonquin Provincial Park campground,
I heard what sounded like air escaping a balloon. We pulled into the nearest parking lot and
checked the vehicle.
I found that there was no air remaining in the
left-side Air Lift helper spring. The right side
was at about 98 psi. Per the dealership’s
instructions, I had set the springs to 100 psi
prior to leaving for my trip.
We brought the rig back to the dealership and
were told that the left and right shocks were
deformed. The technician removed the shocks
and sent them to Air Lift.
Several weeks later, the service department
informed me that neither the dealership nor Air
Lift would be replacing the damaged air
shocks. Their position was that I had exceeded
the maximum weight capability of the Air Lift
helper springs.
According to the Air Lift ratings in the dealer’s
catalog and on Air Lift’s Internet page, the
springs were rated at 6,000 pounds per set. I
would have needed 723 pounds of weight in
addition to fully loaded tanks for the springs to
be overloaded.
Since I was, by my estimate, under the maximum weight requirement when I experienced
this problem, I can no longer use the Lance

answered by Brad Matznick, product
manager for Air Lift:
Our Load Lifter product is listed “up
to 5,000 pounds,” not 6,000. Given your
information, it appears that your truck
was overloaded by 277 pounds. We
warned against this in our literature.
The statement “up to” implies that
there are qualifiers for the actual loadsupport performance of the product.
Our product performance depends
upon a multitude of variables. These
include how it’s installed, the room
available on your vehicle for our product, load distribution on your vehicle,
road conditions and driving styles.
Our product ratings apply to a static
loading, meaning loaded in the parking
lot with no dynamic effect. We can’t
predict or control all of the different
dynamic effects that a truck and a load
can experience.
How the truck is loaded is critical.
The frame is the lever, and the front axle
is the pivot point. As you move the load
back and beyond the tailgate, the load
has greater leverage. Your static loading
and air pressure may have been fine, but
the dynamics complicate things.
We’d like to earn your faith back. I
want to urge you to adjust your vehicle
loading to within your vehicle’s load rating. I’d also like to extend an offer to provide you with a new Load Lifter 5000 kit
and Load Controller at no charge. The

F
rom the Pacific Ocean to the Cascade Range, from
the high desert to the historic and unpretentious
towns, the Beaver State beckons with hundreds of
reasons to stock up the RV and hit the road. With Oregon
celebrating 150 years of statehood in 2009, RVers can
look forward to even more enticements to visit next year,
whether you’re looking for picturesque views out the windshield or planning to get out and explore the countryside.
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENISE L. SEITH
Oregon Coast
Scattered along 360 miles of breathtaking coastline, you’ll discover historic sites, scenic parks, towering lighthouses and
towns brimming with seaside charm. Begin up north with a
bird’s-eye view after ascending the 600-foot Astoria Column,
then visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum and ride
Astoria’s restored streetcar.
RVers and military-history buffs are in for a treat at Fort
Stevens State Park, Oregon’s largest campground. Originally
commissioned as a Civil War fortification, Fort Stevens was
the only armed forces installation in the continental United
States to be fired upon by Japanese submarines during
World War II.
After exploring the deactivated gun batteries and museum,
wander onto the beach to see the rusty skeletal ruins of the
Peter Iredale, a British four-masted barque that ran aground
38 Highways
in 1906. Don’t miss nearby Fort Clatsop National Memorial
where Lewis and Clark spent the wet winter of 1805–06.
Next, mosey through the galleries in artsy Cannon Beach
and take in the views of iconic Haystack Rock from neighboring Ecola State Park. If you like cheese, stop in Tillamook
for a free factory tour and samples of “squeaky cheese.”
As you drive south, pull over at a few of Oregon’s eight
lighthouses, some of which have been guiding ships since the
1870s. Newport’s Yaquina Head Light, the most-visited lighthouse in the state, showcases a 12-foot-high Fresnel lens atop
its 93-foot tower. Heceta Head Light is postcard pretty and
close to the famous Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
where you can take a thrilling sand rail ride.
Coastal campgrounds fill up fast during the summer, so
make reservations well in advance.

Portland Metro Area
Green isn’t just an environmental term in Portland. It’s what
makes this city one of America’s most natural and livable places.
Overlooking downtown, beautiful Washington Park
encompasses a zoo, a forestry center, traditional Japanese gardens, an arboretum and miles of forested hiking trails.
Portland is aptly nicknamed “the City of Roses” because of its
fondness for the flowering shrubs, particularly at the
International Rose Test Gardens, also located in Washington
Park. With more than 7,000 rose bushes in 500 fragrant varieties, the hillside park is all the more delightful on a clear day
when snowcapped Mount Hood backdrops the city below.
The green doesn’t stop there. The world’s smallest dedicated park space, 24-inch Mill Ends Park, is found near the
Willamette River and Governor Tom McCall Waterfront
Park. In addition to its fountains, statues and memorials, 2-
mile-long Waterfront Park becomes the new home of the
Portland Saturday Market come March 2009. Currently
located under the nearby Burnside Bridge, PSM is the country’s largest continuously operating outdoor arts-and-crafts
market and features only locally made products.
Another city cornerstone is Powell’s Books, the nation’s
largest independent bookstore. Grab a map as you enter
because you’ll definitely need it to navigate the color-coded
rooms that contain more than a million new and used volumes. If you enjoy museums, you’re also in luck. The Portland
Art Museum, Oregon History Center and Oregon Museum of
Science and Industry are fun and interesting for all ages.
When you’re ready for a break, relax downtown in Pioneer
Courthouse Square, an open-air plaza that locals use as an
urban living room.

Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood
Some of the state’s most incredible scenery and year-round
recreation can be found just an hour or two from the
Portland metro area.
Perched at the 6,600-foot level on Oregon’s Mount Hood,
Timberline Lodge is an elegantly rustic National Historic
Landmark that has welcomed skiers, climbers and sightseers
since 1937. Catch the continuously running movie (shown in
a small room off the lobby) to learn how skilled craftspeople
hand-built the lodge as a federal WPA project during the
Great Depression. The accomplishment is as amazing as
majestic 11,235-foot Mount Hood itself.
A highlight (literally) of the Columbia River Gorge is 620foot Multnomah Falls (pictured on the opposite page),
Oregon’s most popular natural attraction and the secondhighest year-round waterfall in the country. You wouldn’t
expect this lovely cascade to be accessible right from
Interstate 84, but it’s an easy on-and-off for even the largest
motorhomes. Several smaller but no-less-dramatic waterfalls dot the twisty Historic Columbia River Highway that
parallels the interstate (not recommended for large trailers).
Cliff-top Vista House is the most photographed icon of the
Columbia River Gorge. This recently renovated octagonal
stone structure originally opened in 1916 and towers 733 feet
above the Columbia River. Bring your camera.
Willamette River Valley
Nestled between the Cascade Mountains to the east and the
Coast Mountain Range to the west, the verdant Willamette
River Valley combines broad farmland and rolling hills. To
best experience its beauty and bounty, take the back roads
that lead to historic small towns and covered bridges. You’ll
pass hazelnut and fruit orchards, grass-seed and hop fields
and, in the spring, acres of bright tulips and irises.
More than 200 wineries and the world’s only Americanowned saké brewery welcome visitors to stop and taste their
fine vintages. The local pinot noir rivals those found anywhere in the world.
It’s fun to note that the historic capital city of Salem stands
halfway between the North Pole and the Equator on the 45th
parallel. Founded in 1841, Salem is a throwback to a less-hectic time and is still easy to tour on foot. For a bird’s-eye view
of the city and a close-up look at the gilded Oregon Pioneer
statue atop the capitol building (pictured on the right), hike
up 121 spiraling steps to the dome’s outdoor viewing area.
Take a picnic to Salem’s Riverfront Park, 23 acres of fun
along the meandering Willamette River. While there, hop
aboard the Old World–style carousel, play in A.C. Gilbert’s
Discovery Village, an interactive museum for kids, or marvel
at Eco Earth, a huge stainless-steel orb covered in more than
86,000 glittering tiles. Next, try out your sea legs aboard the
Willamette Queen, an 87-foot, 86-ton sternwheeler with twin
paddles.

Cobalt, azure, sapphire, indigo—there simply aren’t enough
shades of blue to describe the intense color of 1,932-foot-deep
Crater Lake. Established as a national park in 1902, Crater Lake is
uniquely situated in the 6-mile-wide caldera of a dormant volcano that formed some 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama
collapsed following a cataclysmic eruption.
The park offers more than an indescribable watery hue with
camping, hiking, boat tours and a historic lodge. You can circle
the lake on Rim Drive, 33 miles of pure scenery. Take advantage
of the many pull-offs and picnic areas, each offering the opportunity to photograph Wizard Island and other geologic formations that protrude from the deep blue.
For a change of pace and elevation, head underground at
nearby Oregon Caves National Monument. Take the 90-minute
marble-cave tour (dress warmly, since cave temperature averages
44 degrees) and warm up afterward in the 1930s-era
coffee shop inside the Oregon Caves Chateau, a 23-room
National Historic Landmark.

When prospectors discovered gold in
1861, boomtowns such as Whitney,
Bourne and Sumpter sprang up almost
instantly. You can get a feel for these
richer days at the Sumpter Valley Dredge
State Heritage Area where you can step
aboard a massive 1,240-ton gold
dredge—one of only a few still on public
display—and dream of striking it rich.
Walk in the footsteps of pioneers
along the original rutted Oregon Trail, then relive that epic journey at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center outside of Baker City.
Perched high atop Flagstaff Hill, the museum offers displays and
dioramas inside and sweeping panoramas outside.
Speaking of views, Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in
North America, plummets more than a mile to the zigzagging

Central Oregon
Oregon’s high desert is far from a sandand-scrub wasteland. Instead, sweetsmelling ponderosa pine, sage and
juniper, winding rivers and clear lakes
create spectacular roadside scenery
that’s anything but desolate. And that’s
just the lower half of the landscape. Any
number of snow-covered Cascade
Mountain peaks are sure to fill your
windshield and side-view mirrors.
Three prominent peaks, each topping
10,000 feet—Faith, Hope and Charity,
known collectively as the Three Sisters—
give the folksy Western-style town of
Sisters its name. There’s always something to do here, and the town’s one-ofa-kind shops are great for souvenirs.
About 15 miles away, Camp Sherman,
a miniature wooded community in the
heart of the Metolius River Wildlife
Preserve and Recreation Area, offers a
peaceful place to relax and reconnect
with nature. The icy Metolius River
rushes just steps from every forest service
campsite, so bring your fly rod.
Visit the Metolius headwaters (it gently bubbles up from an underground
spring) and photograph 10,497-foot
Mount Jefferson from the same spot.
Then stop at the Wizard Falls Fish
Hatchery and feed the rainbow and
brook trout, kokanee and Atlantic
salmon, all raised in open tanks.
Nearby, Mount Bachelor beckons
skiers and snowboarders in the winter,
Smith Rock State Park calls to rock
climbers and hikers in the summer, and
more than 25 challenging golf courses
roll out the green carpet in between.

With coverage that’s customized for your rig, CSP can turn a major hassle

You can’t live in your RV while it’s in the shop. So if your vehicle is a motorhome, fifth wheel, or
travel trailer and you’re at least 100 miles away from home (or a full-timer), we’ll reimburse you up
to $1,000 for 10 days towards meals and lodging. And if your RV is motorized, we’ll even throw in
another $60 per day (up to 10 days) for a rental car so you can get around!
“The repairs came to over $2,000! But I only paid a $100 deductible.”
Once your RV is in the shop, we discuss the problem with the Service Center; we authorize the

oday’s RVs are designed to provide all the comforts we take
for granted in our stick-and-concrete homes, from refrigerated food and drinks to warm water for showers, cozy temperatures on cool days and air conditioning on hot days. But unlike
stationary houses, many RV comforts depend on liquid
propane, also known as LP-gas, to provide the power needed to
keep us happy and comfortable.
Besides being combustible, propane—and another airborne
danger, carbon monoxide—can make the air deadly inside your
RV. That’s why all new motorhomes and travel trailers are
required to have detectors for propane and carbon monoxide in
addition to a smoke detector. RVs sold prior to 2005 weren’t
required to have a carbon-monoxide monitor.
Chances are, noxious vapors won’t permeate your RV, but to
be on the safe side, it doesn’t hurt to review the devices used
to detect these dangerous gases and consider the steps needed to prevent the unthinkable.

Detecting Danger
The smoke detector is a device we’re all familiar with. It’s possible that you’ve even set off a smoke detector when you’ve
burned something in the kitchen. Even the harmless fried fat
that fills the air when you’re cooking can trigger the alarm.
But before you curse the device for being a nuisance, consider that it can alert us to the real thing, such as a burning ember
igniting a bedspread or the carpet bursting into flames because
of an electrical short. The biannual chore of inserting a new
nine-volt battery every time you advance the clocks to Daylight
Saving Time and set them back to Standard Time is minor, considering the value of smoke detectors.
Like smoke, propane can invade your living area, but its pres-

Be Aware of Bad Air
Stay alert with detectors from the following companies:
ence and its dangers are different. The natural gas used in your
house and the LP-gas that supplies your RV with heat and (in
the case of your refrigerator) cold are infused with a noxious
odor designed to alert your sense of smell. However, these
gases tend to lie low because they’re heavier than our ambient
atmosphere. That’s why your RV’s LP-gas detector (available for
about $45) should be mounted close to the floor of your
motorhome or trailer. If there’s minimal air circulation in your
RV at night, even a slow gas leak could easily lead to an explosive or otherwise life-threatening situation.
Carbon monoxide—also known as the silent killer—is more
insidious than propane or smoke. Carbon monoxide kills by displacing the oxygen in your system, and without enough oxygen,
you die. A carbon-monoxide detector can make the difference
between waking up to a new day or sleeping your life away.
During the 2008 Indianapolis 500 auto race, a group of RVers
camping in a Class C motorhome just outside the track was
overcome by carbon-monoxide poisoning. Three of the four
occupants survived this ordeal, but one didn’t make it. The RV
was plugged into shore power to run the coach’s air conditioner and wasn’t running a generator. While not confirmed at the
time of this writing, it may have been the close proximity to a
neighboring RV’s generator that provided the carbon-monoxide
fumes that led to the death of the sleeping camper. This
tragedy may have been averted had the motorhome been
equipped with a functioning carbon-monoxide detector.
If your RV isn’t equipped with a carbon-monoxide detector,
you can have this vital device installed for around $60 at an RVservice center. Follow the Daylight Saving/Standard Time battery-changing routine for all carbon monoxide, smoke and
propane detectors so that you can sleep and breathe easy.

t wasn’t long ago that a motorhome’s platform dictated the amount of features available to the buyer. The heavier the chassis, the
more accoutrements that could be piled on—
and the bigger the price tag.
But today’s gas and diesel chassis allow RV
manufacturers to put creature comforts previously found only in high-end coaches in a
smaller package and lower price range.
Take the Allegro Bay 37QSB by Tiffin
Motorhomes. Available in base form on a Ford
gas chassis or an optional Freightliner FRED
front-engine diesel platform, the coach strikes
a balance between weekend comfort and fulltime livability.
“It has a relatively short length yet features a
full rear bathroom,” says Tiffin sales manager
Jerry Williamson. It also has a mid-coach halfbath, he adds, because people are used to having two bathrooms in their home.
Tiffin designers have paid attention to detail.
Visitors are greeted with a completely tiled living area, custom cabinets made from alder,
cherry bark or natural maple and solid-surface
countertops. A 32-inch Panasonic LCD television is mounted in the rear of the living area so
it can be viewed from every seat in the house.
The street-side slide-out has a 72-inch booth
dinette and a 66-inch sofa bed. Buyers can opt
for a freestanding dinette or Ultraleather Ushaped dinette and a sleeper-sofa combo. The
galley, with its stainless-steel convection–
microwave oven and stainless-steel refrigerator,
is in another street-side slide-out.
The half-bath area has a toilet and sink area,
and across the hall stands a stacked washer and
dryer. Just a few steps back is the master bedroom, which has a queen bed located in an
extra-deep slide-out to give the area a roomy
feel. A generously proportioned wardrobe and
a 26-inch LCD television reside in a smaller
slide-out on the street side.
The tiled rear bathroom is larger than you’d
expect and boasts a sizable sink, toilet, overhead cabinet and a shower with a glass door.
The Allegro Bay line is available in five floor
plans with your choice of nine exterior colors.
Options include a memory-foam mattress and
an exterior entertainment system built into the
wall at eye level.

Morro National Monument, the Four
Corners Monument, Monument Valley
and the Painted Desert.
Gallup’s many attractions and friendly
environment make the city a worthy destination in its own right, says Moore.
“I’ve lived here for 30 years, and it’s just a
great town to call home,” he says.
Gallup has been called the Indian
Capital of the World for its sizeable
Indian population and location near
Native American lands. Navajo, Zuni,
Hopi and other tribes have deep roots in
the area, and the city offers numerous
attractions, shops and restaurants related
to these cultures.
Guests at USA RV Park enjoy 120 gravel campsites (including 90 pull-through
spots), free Wi-Fi, a heated pool, a game
room, a recreation hall, a dog run and
even a business center with computers.
Don’t have a rig? The campground offers
four rental lodgings.
Capitalizing on the area’s Native
American culture, the park’s gift shop has
a vast selection of Native American crafts
by local artisans. Check out the sterling
silver, turquoise and coral jewelry along
with artworks, pottery, apparel and souvenirs including Route 66 memorabilia.
“This is a great place with excellent staff,”
reports Michael Cutler of Santa Rosa,
California, on www.goodsamclub.com. To

Wiper Buddy Windshield Wiper Protection
Wiper Buddy extends the life of windshield blades by keeping them from
freezing to the glass in winter and preventing them from trapping moisture and debris year-round. Made of lightweight, high-impact polypropylene, Wiper Buddy elevates the wiper arm and blade from the windshield
when the vehicle’s parked or stored. The easy-to-install device fits single or double wiper arms. Eugene Kosinski, a Good Sam product tester
from Woodridge, Illinois, says, “Wiper Buddy keeps your wiper blades

Does this ferry look familiar?
Give us the location of the watery crossing pictured above, and
you might be the winner of this month’s $50 prize in the Where’s Good Sam photo contest. To enter, send
an e-mail identifying the photo’s location and state or province to whereisgoodsam@goodsamclub.com
and include your name and contact information. On December 1, we’ll pick one $50 winner at random
from among the correct entries. Look for the answer and the winner in the February 2009 issue.
A boatload of Good Sam Club members have already
won this year. Cathleen Jensen of Port Charlotte, Florida,
garnered $50 after correctly identifying the location of the
August issue’s Where’s Good Sam photo, reprinted on the
right. The Good Sam–stickered RV stands in front of Thirty
Mile Point Lighthouse in Golden Hill State Park on the
shores of Lake Ontario in Barker, New York.
The Good Sam Club member who took the photo—Tom
Hutchings of Fairport, New York—earned $50 as well, and
you can join the fun, too. Simply take a digital photo of an
RV in an interesting or scenic location with your Good Sam
decal prominently displayed. E-mail the high-resolution
image to whereisgoodsam@goodsamclub.com and don’t
forget to provide your name and contact information. If
your photo’s selected, you’ll receive a check for $50.
