Course Objectives:
This course is designed to teach the basic principles of video production. It offers a conceptual
introduction and practical experience on how to shoot video that is steady, in focus, well framed and, most
importantly, tells a story. You will understand conceptual and technical fundamentals of nonlinear digital
editing. You also will have the opportunity to explore electronic news gathering/interview techniques, shoot
and produce and edit a public service announcement, as well as script, shoot and edit a final project. While
the course requires that you develop competencies in A/V equipment operation and computer-based
editing, the focus of the course is on understanding and effectively communicating audio/visual messages
through the generally accepted production norms associated with journalism, advertising/public relations,
entertainment.

Pencil and pen
External drive w/USB connector (120 GB preferred)
Participation:
•
Fill out the daily goal sheet each day and add the points up on Friday
•
Consistent communication with team members and/or instructor.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluations are determined on project quality, functionality and individual contributions to
project (Group). Each evaluation will be based on the following areas.
•
Followed the assignment instructions.
•
Student used class time to best advantage.
•
Student displayed a positive attitude towards the class and classmates.
•
Student was not disruptive or disrespectful to peers and/or instructor.
•
Student did not misuse, abuse or neglect any Lab equipment.

Assignments and Due dates:
Deadlines are absolute. Late work will be accepted by permission only from the Instructor.
Late work is worth 80% of the 100% that was possible when 1 day late, 2 - 3 Days late 50%
possible, 4 - 5 days 25% and after 5 days late “0%”.

If you miss class, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor for assignment
make-up. Make-up time will be outside of the normal class time.
•
If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, you will be expected to hand it
in on the day you return to class.

Handing in an Assignment:
The Instructor will demonstrate the process of handing in work. Every assignment will be
copied to the instructors external drive Completed or Not on the assigned due date.
Students will automatically receive 50% of the 100% possible by meeting the due date.
The remaining 50% is determined on the quality of the assignment/project. Late
assignments: see Assignments and Due dates.
Handing the project in on time accomplishes two things:
1. Students learn to pace their projects, keeping ideas and work realistic when meeting the
assignment's completion goals.
2. Students receive 50% credit, which is better than “0” credit.
