The effect of the interaction of all parts is greater than the sum of individual parts. Or put differently: the energy of a combination of factors is very
important. In hydrography this is well-known: you need different pieces
of equipment that go together well to get the best result in your measurements. Every piece of the set-up needs to be linked to the other in the best
possible way, taking into account the requirements of the survey and the
circumstances out at sea. Finding the best combination of pieces of survey
equipment is not an easy task, maybe even an enduring search for many of
you. This enduring search is also a challenge to the field of course: increasing accuracy and efficiency by research at universities as well as companies
is showing immense progress. This progress, presented at conferences and
seminars worldwide, is not always within reach of every professional in the
field. In all the issues of Hydro International we try to give an overview
of the progress in the field to the worldwide community. Because even in a

Airborne Hydrography AB (AHAB)
develops and sells airborne Lidar
survey systems for hydrographic and
topographic surveys. The products
are the HawkEye™ and Chiroptera™
for nearshore nautical charting, safe
shipping and protection of the
coastal zone environment. The
DragonEye is a high-resolution corridor mapping survey system for
infrastructure and 3D modelling
applications.
The multi-channel HawkEye III is
the fi rst multichannel sensor in the
world. It has three unique Oblique
Lidar channels. The deep penetrating 10kHz (kD>4) bathymetry
(green) channel and the shallow
water region 35kHz are optimised
for their depths and total seafloor
coverage. The 400kHz topographic
Lidar complements the bathy channels and generates land data. The
operator console Leica OC-60 and
pilot display PD60 provides both
the operator and the pilot sensor
and fl ight information in the air
and during the survey. The output is
a seamless data fi le with seabed
and topographic data. Included in
the Lidar Survey Studio 2.0 software suite are tools for seabed
characterisation, water refraction
correction, submerged vegetation
identification and more. The Leica
RCD30 digital camera and other
sensors are easily integrated for
additional data capture, 3D imaging and documentation. The HawkeEye and the smaller Chiroptera
(35kHz bathy, kD>2) system are
optimised for nearshore surveying,
urban area development, storm and
disaster assessment or monitoring
global change.
Airborne Hydrography AB provides
turn-key systems and all necessary
hardware and software for ease of
use, easy installation and postprocessing of point-cloud raw data.
The standard output in LAS format
can be further processed for end
products such as DEMs, coastal
erosion and flooding analysis and
more.

Geometrics
Founded in 1969, Geometrics has been
a world leader in the design and manufacture of rugged, portable and technologically-innovative geophysical
instruments for land, sea and airborne
subsurface investigations. The company’s main product lines include proton
precession and caesium magnetometers, high-resolution seismographs,
digital marine streamers, and geoelectrical conductivity imaging and resistivity systems for producing detailed
maps of the Earth’s subsurface. Applications include:

environmental studies
• Locating archaeological and
treasure sites
In partnership with P-Cable Seismic
AS of Norway, Geometrics created a
super high-resolution 3D survey system for marine research. The
P-Cable system incorporates the
GeoEel digital solid streamer, the
ultimate in marine seismic fidelity,
and when deployed provides exceptional results at low cost and high
production rates.
In other marine applications, the
model G-882 caesium-vapour marine
magnetometer (also available in
transverse gradiometer configuration) provides
high-resolution magnetic maps for
pipeline, shipwreck and UXO surveys.
The G-882 is a reliable and compact
system designed for professional surveys in shallow or deep water. Geometrics provides complete systems
with data logging and analysis programmes including the ability to produce Google Earth™ map overlays.
Geometrics’ geophysical instruments, sensors and data processing

ATLANS, the new geo-referencing
and orientation system
ATLANS, a new cost-effective georeferencing and orientation system,
has been designed specifically for
land and airborne mapping
applications being conducted within

unit is ITAR-free.
The user gets a compact, lightweight
gyrocompass and motion sensor
that consumes very little power and
yet provides all the required data for
demanding navigation, stabilisation
and control applications. ATLANS
can easily be integrated with standard GNSS and DMI systems and is
effortlessly combined with most
commonly used fl ight management,
satellite tracking and mobile imaging systems. All of the interface and
computing electronics are contained
within a single housing that also features an embedded RTK GPS with a
new SIGIL algorithm for accuracy to
the nearest centimetre and a data
logger for raw data recording.
ATLANS is based on fibre optic gyroscope (FOG) technology, extensively
developed by iXBlue over a period of
25 years and now incorporated into
a range of high-performance positioning and navigational aids for use
in civil, defence and space applications. Being solid state and having
no moving parts, FOGs have become
renowned for their ruggedness and
stability, and for their extended and
maintenance-free service lives.
