RINA SERVICES S.p.A. has long-standing experience in conformity testing of products intended for use in
ERTMS/ETCS control-command and signaling systems, including also products used in legacy national signaling systems.
This experience covers a wide scope in ERTMS/ETCS technology, ranging from technical support to ERA in updating the harmonized test specifications, technical support to other European laboratories or railways for joint development or validation of test tools and related test procedures.
This considerable experience has also enabled RINA SERVICES S.p.A. to establish its own laboratory for conformity tests of basic ERTMS/ETCS products: the Railway Certification Laboratory .
The Laboratory is located in the western part of Genova, in the industrial district and easily accessible by road, rail and air. It is fully equipped for conformity verification of products intended for use in track-side or in train-borne ERTMS/ETCS sub-systems.
The Laboratory covers the following ERTMS/ETCS main areas:
ƒ Eurobalise products: Antenna/BTM, Balise and LEU
The Eurobalise section of the Laboratory meets all the requirements of UNISIG SUBSET-085. It is equipped with two parallel test benches allowing parallel testing of different products. The product conformity procedures are executed almost automatically in full respect of UNISIG SUBSET-085.
Some LEU tests, not currently covered by SUBSET-085, are carried out under specific RINA procedures based on UNISIG SUBSET-036. The optional Antenna/BTM interoperability tests with KER balises
(according to UNISIG SUBSET-100, SUBSET-101 and SUBSET-102), are also possible as well as the
Antenna/BTM susceptibility tests (according to the incoming standard UNISIG SUBSET-116).
ƒ ETCS on-board equipment
The laboratory is compliant to SUBSET-094 and allows the full execution of the EC Conformity tests, as defined in SUBSET-076-6-3 for the ETCS on-board constituent Baselines 2 and 3. The laboratory tests are aimed at EC Conformity Assessment of the ETCS on-board constituent and EC Verification of the
ETCS on-board subsystem, as well as the functional verification of SW and/or HW parts.
ƒ Euroloop products: Antenna/LTM, LOOMO/Leaky Cable and LEU/Loop
The EUROLOOP section of the Laboratory, currently under development, meets all the requirements of UNISIG SUBSET-103. It shares many instruments, tools and test software with the Eurobalise test benches. The products’ conformity procedures are executed almost automatically in full respect of
UNISIG SUBSET-103 and SUBSET-044.

ƒ GSM-R Products: CAB RADIO, OPH, GPH, EDOR
The GSM-R section of the Laboratory uses real GSM-R radio coverage accessed with SIM-CARDS profiled for test purposes to perform functional tests of mobile terminals. The laboratory is mainly used for pre-conformity tests in accordance with EIRENE FRS and SRS, UIC O-3001, UNISIG Subset- 093 and
UIC O-2475.
The EUROBALISE section of the Railway Certification Laboratory is accredited to the EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard by the Italian Accreditation Body ACCREDIA for the test methods listed on the laboratory website: railwaylab.rina.org.
Accreditation pursuant to the EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard represents formal recognition not only that the laboratory complies with the requirements of the system for all testing activities but also of technical competency concerning the accredited tests.
