RISK ASSOCIATED WITH FAILURE AND CASUALTIES All human activities are associated with a certain degree of risk. The only chance we have is to assess and manage it. Based on its experience as market leader for the ro-ro ship segment, RINA knows the risks in this marine sector very well: health and safety of crew and passengers, security, environment, ship as assets, business continuity and company reputation and so on. Machinery failure and casualties (such as fire or flooding) affecting a ship’s spaces are events that may cause significant end effects and depending on the likelihood of their occurrence can result in unacceptable risk. This has led RINA to create a service for the assessment of potential risks associated with ro-ro ships. Single failure analysis - FMECA (Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis) The scope of this analysis is to assess the risk associated with a single failure of particular equipment or systems and to identify the most appropriate measures to be implemented. The analysis evaluates the ship’s system availability in the case of any single failure. The systems to be analyzed (such as propulsion & safety systems, navigation systems, sanitation, hotel services and so on), the consequences to be considered (on personnel, rather than on environment, assets, etc.), the definition of likelihood are decided in cooperation with the customers depending on their objectives. Loss of one space Several tragic events have highlighted the importance of assessing the consequences of the loss of one ship’s internal space and, obviously, of all systems located inside. The goal is to assess the risk and to suggest the best measures to be implemented for its reduction considering the likelihood of losing space due to fire or flooding, in consideration of its fire load and position (deck level), and the consequences on the personnel, the environment, the company reputation. The space to be analyzed, the consequences to be considered, the definition of likelihood are decided in cooperation with the customers depending on their objectives. ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY Marine Energy Business Assurance Transport & Infrastructures IFIs, Banks and Investors INNOVATION Additional class notation RISK MITIGATION The minimum standards to comply with are prescribed by international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL) and in classification and flag rules. At the discretion of the ship-owner / operators, additional measures can be implemented in order to further increase the prevention of failures and the protection against their consequences. The additional class notation RISK MITIGATION is issued to reward those ships for which additional measures have been adopted to achieve risk reduction in specific matters such as fire and flooding protection, propulsion and safety systems. While the choice of systems to be improved and additional measures to be implemented is up to customers, RINA can provide specific advisory services to support them in their decisions. Regarding Risk Mitigation (Fire), see also the “Fire risk mitigation: enhanced inspection scheme” leaflet. RINA SERVICES assists customers by providing services for the identification, management and financial control of the risks of any activity. Risk assessment is a systematic process, aimed at estimating the main risks inherent in any activity, and suggesting the necessary countermeasures in terms of their elimination, reduction, transfer and control.
