The BENNING PV 1 is a
portable and easy-to-use
installation tester for
photovoltaic systems.
Safety
It reliably meets the demands of
the safety-related measurements
required in compliance with VDE
0126-23 (DIN EN 62446) and
confirms them providing documented results.
Due to high system voltages of up to 1,000 VDC, extreme caution should be exercised when making measurements on PV
systems. Besides the danger of a life-threatening DC voltage,
electrical connections must not be disconnected when being
under load due to the danger of possible arcing!
At low luminous intensity already, solar panels generate almost
their nominal open-circuit voltage. Current and power increase
with the luminous intensity increasing as well.
The BENNING PV 1 is provided with contact-protected PV
measuring leads for direct connection to all PV modules /
strings by means of standardized PV connectors.
The automatic testing procedure gives a warning in case of
wrong DC polarity and automatically performs all necessary
steps for a safe measurement of open-circuit voltage, shortcircuit current and insulating resistance.
Thus, the test person can directly attend to an evaluation of
the measuring results instead of thinking about test configurations and connection problems when using several individual
measuring instruments.

produce the prognosticated yields
The current standards regarding the electric installation and
wiring for photovoltaic systems have to be adhered to.
Moreover, the system has to be adequately documented and
has to be tested prior to commissioning.
Measuring functions & features
For the protective conductor resistance
measurement RPE (PE = protective earth), a testing current of 200 mA is applied.

Measuring leads of different lengths can be
compensated to „zero“ prior to testing in order
not to influence the measuring resistance.

The open-circuit voltage VOC (OC = open circuit)
of the solar modules or PV strings can be
measured up to 1,000 VDC.
The short-circuit current ISC (SC = short circuit)
is measured via an internal circuit up to 10 ADC
without any danger for the user.

The BENNING PV 1
allows to carry out
the entire test safely,
reliably, easily and
quickly – within a few
seconds only.
The test includes
continuity testing of
earth connections,
measurement of the
open-circuit voltage
and short-circuit
current as well as
insulating resistance
measurement between
active conductors and
earth.
The insulating resistance RISO (ISO = insulation)
is measured between the active DC conductors
(+/-) and earth. Preset limiting values allow a
pass/fail evaluation.
The desired ISO testing voltage can be selected prior to testing by pressing a key. Testing
voltages of 250 V, 500 V and 1,000 VDC are
available.
The internal memory of measured values for up to 200 display indications can be used for „stringto-string“ comparison. The download of measuring results occurs by means of USB interface.
In case of the open-circuit voltage or shortcircuit current deviating by more than 5 % from
the average value, this will be signaled by a
warning and by an indication.

Alternatively, this measurement also
can be made by means of a current clamp with direct current (DC)
measurement. We recommend the
digital current clamps BENNING CM 2 (current measurement up to 300 AAC/DC, item no. 044035) or BENNING CM 5-1 (current measurement up to 600 AAC/DC, item no. 044066).
Periodic testing of PV systems
For periodic tests in regular intervals or after maintenance
work, the safety and correct operation of PV systems have to
be proven. Failures and defects can be detected and eliminated in due time by regular maintenance and inspection.
Distinct symbols – easy operation
Four steps towards easy and safe PV testing:
1. Disconnect the PV module from the inverter.
2. Connect the PV module to the BENNING PV 1 by means of standardized connectors.
Daily use – easy operation
The BENNING PV 1 is recommended for daily use by service,
cleaning and maintenance teams as well as for solar panel
installers and authorized experts for photovoltaics.
3. Press the „AUTO“ key and follow the measurements on the LC display.
4. Press the „STORE“ key to store the entire display indication.
Proof of performance and efficiency
The current of each individual PV string can be measured by
means of the BENNING CC 3 current clamp adapter and can be
compared with the values to be expected.
Scope of delivery
The BENNING PV 1 comes in a functional transport and storage
case with batteries for initial equipment, „Sunclix“ and MC4
test adapters for conventional solar modules, measuring leads,
alligator clips and CD-ROM with download software and thus
offers a complete package with an excellent cost/performance
ratio.
