* Cutting into the site is against
the rules. Nevertheless, the Guggenheim boat is at the heart of a
new and continued Guggenheim
outreach strategy and network
development. The integration of
the boat needs to be central to
the architecture, expressing the
connectivity to nearby small towns
and beyond when in port and as
a void when at sea. However, if it
is deemed impossible, we have
demonstrated an alternative boat
location, which maintains the
boat-filling-architectural-void strategy, but without harbor cut.

genheim experience on the water in the spirit of openness and public engagement, akin to the Guggenheim lab. This is a primary conceptual move: the overall form and circulation of the building are generated
by the presence (and absence) of this fragment.*
This proposal engages the city of Helsinki’s rich tradition of public space, its parks and its maritime setting.
First, ArtDock draws in and connects at various levels the landscapes from the city: from Tähtitornin Vuori
park and from the Olympia Deck, to create a new fluid and connective groundscape. Second, by pulling
the ground up and through the museum (akin to a sectional Carpenter Center (Le Corbusier)) ArtDock provides a second public terrace and panoramic views back to the city.

1. The Harbor Ground
The park landscape is drawn into the site by the recreation of its forest-like space: irregularly placed treelike columns, and a reflective ceiling that creates secondary perceived space above the already lofty cover.
The angles of the museum’s rising volumes above maximizes sunlight in the undercroft, illuminating the
plaza in the darkest winter months. During the long winter nights, these columns are illuminated for a 24
hour activated public space.
At the south west of the site, the ground rises to +6m to connect with the Olympia-deck and
Tähtitornin-Vuori park. As well as referencing the Finnish landscape, and the history of ship-building, the
raising of the museum on stilts frees up the harborside for public activity (performance spaces, a café and
outdoor sculpture) and protects the art from possible future flooding.
Artboat, when docked, completes the harbor ground, its deck aligning formally and materially with the cut,
so that, when in port, it can act as a stage for special events.

2. The Ramp
The entry plaza lifts up and rises through the built volume towards the museum’s main entry and to the
roof beyond. The ramp is oriented to benefit from the low-angle sunlight. Six meters above the plaza along
the pathway to the roof, the ramp emerges into the bright expansive entry plaza and public lobby. Continuing up visitors arrive at the viewing decks on the roof.

4. The Roof ‘ground’
The roofscape presents three distinct public spaces for open program and outdoor exhibition, each one
addressing a different component of the surrounding environment, culminating in a vibrant panorama of
the city of Helsinki. On the east side of the roof, a saw-tooth form harnesses both diffuse northern light for
the galleries and offices below and solar energy via optimally oriented southern facing photovoltaics.

Structure
Referencing the native birch tree, the steel structure is an irregular triangulated frame supported by an array of narrow steel columns. Large perceived cantilevers are made possible by distributing loads over a
dense forest of steel columns. Beam depths and column size vary with span, making an extremely efficient structural web.
Materiality
Drawing upon the darkness of the night sky and the ocean, the underside of the museum is a vast field of
dark polished steel. The column forest and users are reflected in the surface creating a spectacle of spatial
inversion. Columns are wrapped in a perforated steel sheet reminiscent of the unique bark pattern of the
birch tree, during daylight hours this treatment reads as a simple perforation, while in dark an LED array
pours light out through the apertures transforming a dark underbelly into a glowing and sensual space.
The darkness of the reflective steel underside is continued in the façade through the use of shou-sugiban
cedar. This charred wood skin takes advantage of the availability of quality local wood while applying an
environmentally responsible treatment that extends the life of the material in a harsh maritime setting.
In contrast to the exterior, the atrium is clad in local birch, which warmly reflects daylight from the skylight.
