IATA Cargo Air Transport Lithium Battery 2016 Update III, Changes to the Provisions for Lithium
Batteries Effective 1 April 2016 – RMA process for air shipments only.
This document provides guidance for transporting lithium batteries by air as identified in IATA
Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) (57th Edition). The DGR provision for lithium batteries is
also in the IATA Lithium Battery Shipping Guidelines (LBSG).


Each consignment of packages with lithium batteries is required to have the lithium
battery handling label and must be accompanied by a document.
This document may be in any form provided it contains all the appropriate information
and accompanies the consignment.
Manufacturers of devices with lithium batteries packed with equipment or contained in equipment
must develop a clear instruction for customers for returning products. This instruction must
include packaging materials and lithium battery handling labels, as necessary and the transport
method and mode that must be followed. It must include clear statement on applicable
prohibitions.

All lithium battery shipments, including when packed with or contained in equipment, will
need to be declared by the net weight as per the definition of net weight (IATA DGR
Appendix A).
Steps listed in Procedure section identify how to return Welch Allyn products for service that

Procedure
1) Do not ship any battery that has been physically damaged or shows signs of leakage
unless you receive specific instructions which meet the requirements for the shipment of
Lithium-ion batteries. Dispose of damaged or leaking batteries in an environmentally
safe manner consistent with local regulations.
a) DHL will NOT accept any shipments for devices with lithium batteries (ion or
metal) installed, they must be removed.
b) DHL/FedEx/UPS will NOT accept any shipments with lithium batteries (ion or
metal) that are confirmed or suspected to be defective and/or damaged
(regardless of how the condition is and in whichever quantities).
c) DHL/FedEx/UPS will NOT accept any batteries that have been recalled by the
battery supplier/manufacturer nor any waste batteries meant for recycling or
disposal purposes (regardless of condition).
2) When shipping a device that contains a lithium battery (ion or metal), the battery MUST
be removed from the device and retained by the customer before packed for shipping.
a) Customers MUST use ground transportation when returning a device that
contains a lithium battery.
b) When a lithium battery needs to be returned to Welch Allyn, USE the original
packaging from the replacement battery to pack the battery and ship the battery
separately.
c) Return shipment of a battery without approved packing materials unless provided
by Welch Allyn will not be accepted.
d) Welch Allyn is not responsible for any shipment that is disposed of by Carrier
Company due to mis-packaging; packages containing a device with a battery
installed, and/or mislabeled product returns.
3) The following Welch Allyn products contain Lithium Ion batteries that are removable.
Due to the new IATA Regulations, lithium ion batteries MUST be removed from your
product before shipping to Welch Allyn. Please keep your battery to reinstall upon return
of your device. Failure to comply with the new regulation may result in the courier
disposing of your product.

you are requested to use Welch Allyn approved packaging materials with appropriate
labeling before shipping device(s) to Welch Allyn. Please call Welch Allyn to obtain the
appropriate packing material.
Please Note: For Service or Advance Replacement orders (see Replacement Options below)
please use the packaging from the replacement device to return your original device to Welch
Allyn.

disposal/recycling instructions.
2) Prepare the battery as follows, and follow any instructions given by the disposer /
recycler.
a) Cover the battery terminals, (both positive and negative) with tape.
b) Place the battery inside a plastic bag.
c) Deposit into disposal / recycler approved container
3) If shipping the battery to a recycler, it must be shipped in compliance with all
applicable regulations.
a) Place the battery in strong outer packaging
b) Package the battery so electrically active terminals cannot come into
contact with each other to avoid short circuits
c) Lithium-ion batteries destined for disposal or recycling can only be
shipped via ground. These batteries are forbidden from air transport.
d) Label the package with: Lithium ion batteries for disposal / recycling
e) On the shipping document; following local regulation recommendations.
f) DO NOT SHIP DEFECTIVE, DAMAGED, OR RECALLED BATTERIES,
CONTACT A LOCAL DISPOSAL ORGANIZATION.
