Fall 2005
Alumni Relations Report
Greetings alumni of Alpha Sigma
Chapter! I am sure summer brought
fun times and events for the undergraduates, and that the same is true for
many alumni. We are now two months
into the fall semester here at Fresno,
and many great things have occurred
already.
In the latter part of September, a
strategic planning session conducted
by Zane Akins was held with many
undergraduates and alumni in attendance. During this session, we
outlined goals and priorities, and have
already seen significant progress towards accomplishing those goals.
I am pleased to say that our chapter crescent will now be published
regularly in an effort to keep alumni
updated of all upcoming events and
happenings within the chapter. I have
included in this issue a “Where are
they now?” segment, which will now
featured in each issue. I would like to
thank those alumni that responded,
and we plan to have more biographies
in future issues and other periodicals.
We have also had great success in
the effort of locating lost alumni, as
we have been able to get in contact
with 15 over the past two months.
However, we still have around 100
alumni yet to be located. The names
of those individuals will be on the
following page, and we ask that if you
know of the whereabouts of any of
them, please contact the chapter.
On a lighter note, we still have tailgates and parking at our house during
football games and other events. So,
if you are attending any events on the
campus, feel free to stop by and say
hello, because the guys always enjoy
interacting with brothers from different generations. Also, this past spring
semester we constructed a web site
for the chapter which can be found at:
www.fresnoagr.com. I encourage all
alumni to regularly check it for chapter events, as well as register under the
alumni registration.
I hope that all of our alumni have
had a great and successful 2005, and I
look forward to meeting many of you
during my term as VNR Alumni Relations. If you have any questions about
alumni or want more information on
events contact me at 831-596-4984.

Robby Massera
Operations Report
As we began this fall semester,
our chapter had several projects that
had been carried over from the spring
semester that needed to be completed.
The top priority on our list was the
women’s restroom, as flooding caused
extensive damage a few semesters
ago. The flooring in the restroom and
the housemother’s room also needed
to be replaced. This past spring, the
restroom floor was repaired along with
many other improvements. Upon returning this fall, the stalls still needed
to be repainted and installed, and this
was accomplished with the help of
brothers Justin Clark, David Xavier,
Chris McKenna and Marcus Pedrin.
The housemother’s room is still a
work in progress, and brother Hector
Jimenez is working hard to accomplishing this.
This semester house duties have
been going very well. The house has
been clean and a lot of small projects
are being accomplished. As for the
rest of the semester, I would like to
see some marked improvement on the
hallways and the empty rooms. We
hope to see more and more improvement in the near future, as this will
help recruitment and bringing in new
members. Another important issue
facing our house is our men’s restroom, as time has obviously taken its
toll on it. Unfortunately, we do not
have the essential funds to accomplish
this, and we are hoping that a strong
effort from both alumni and the chapter will result in a full remodel soon!
Fraternally,
Steven Matthews
Recruitment Report
This fall semester’s recruitment has been a success! Our
new members so far are Art Filice, Ryan Bacchetti, Steven
Shultz, Bryan Melikian, and Mathew Rule. The new members have adapted well to being a brother of Alpha Gamma
Rho, and we are already preparing for next semester’s
spring ‘06 class. Each brother continues to spread our name
on campus in an effort to continue to bring quality men
in the brotherhood of AGR. I encourage any alumni who
know of any young men that would make a good addition to our house to contact myself, or any undergraduate
brother. JBL7401@csufresno.edu

Scholarship Report
The main goal of the chapter is to increase the undergraduate focus on academics and scholarship, including
progress reports and implementing study hours. Progress
reports increases dialogue between the brothers and their
professors, thus establishing relationships with faculty
and staff. As a yearlong project, I hope to make significant
improvements to the study room, including converting the
study room into a computer lab, expanding our library, and
using the study room as a tool to implement study hours.
Another ongoing task I hold throughout the semester is
researching scholarship and internship opportunities for the
brothers. This requires a good relationship with the departments within the college of agriculture. More importantly,
it is my intention to increase the intensity of scholarship in
our chapter. As a house, by increasing focus on scholarship,
we are creating more opportunities for our members to
excel in their university, chapter, community and career.
Fraternally,
John Migliazzo
Where Are They Now?
This “Where are they now” segment will be an ongoing
portion of the Alpha Sigma Chapter Crescent. We would
like to thank the alumni that took time out of their busy
schedules to speak with us. More biographies will be in
upcoming issues.
Where is Brother Larry Layne now?
Larry Layne, pin #4, was one of the 38 members to
sign the Alpha Sigma Chapter charter in 1963. He graduated from Fresno State University with a degree in Dairy
Science. He married Elise, an Alpha Xi Delta at Fresno, in
1963, they have three sons. He resides in Sanger, a small
community outside of Fresno.
He was one of the first Sigma Alpha Noble Rulers, Vice
President of the student body, and a member of the dairy
judging team. After graduation he pursued a career in
banking and credits a Purdue AGR for his first position. He
started as a management trainee and worked up the chain
over 37 years to become Vice Chairman of Sanwa bank.
His AGR and agricultural roots remain strong. He is a
past president of the Alpha Gamma Rho Alumni Association, as well as a Director and past chairmen of the Board
of Directors of the Agricultural Foundation at Fresno State.
He has also served as a Trustee of the Bulldog Foundation
and is a past chairman of Ag-One. His most memorable
AGR experience was driving cross country with Ken
Melvold, Don Gaab and Jim O’Banion to present the Alpha
Sigma charter at the AGR national convention in Minneapolis.
Where is Brother Frank Coderniz now?
Frank Coderniz, pin #307, became a member of Alpha
Sigma Chapter as part of the Omega class of 1974. He received his AA from Merced College, and went on to marry
Betty Silva, a Phi Mu from Fresno, in 1983. He has two
daughters: Allison, who is a Delta Gamma at Fresno, and
Diane, who is a member of Sigma Kappa at Cal Poly.
During Frank’s time at Fresno, his father became ill,
which forced him to leave Fresno and return home to
manage the family’s dairy and farming enterprises. Today,
Coderview dairy milks 284 registered Holsteins while also
farming 500 acres of cotton, alfalfa, corn, and oats. Currently, he is a director of the California Holstein Association, is a past president of the Merced Holstein Club, and
serves as a board member for the Merced Milling Company. In his spare time, he enjoys playing a friendly game
of poker with his friends. Frank credits AGR for many of
his good friends, and says that he is still able to keep in
touch with many of those people he made friends with so
long ago.
Where is Brother Bill Jones now?
Bill Jones, pin #165, became a member of Alpha Sigma
Chapter as part of Mu class in 1968, and received his degree in agribusiness and plant sciences from Fresno State
in 1971. He married Maurine, a Delta Gamma at Fresno, in
1971, and Bill and Maurine now have 2 daughters: Wendy,
who is married and has 3 children, and Andrea, who is the
press secretary for Senator John McCain.
After graduation, Bill returned to the family row crop
and cattle business. In 1982, he was elected to the California State Legislature for six consecutive 2-year terms, and
served one term as the republican leader of the assembly
during that time. In 1994, he was elected Secretary of State
(making him the first resident of the Central Valley to serve
in a statewide constitutional office in over a century), then
was eventually re-elected to the position in 1998, and went
on to run for U.S Senate as the Republican candidate from
California in 2004. Currently, he is the chairman of Pacific
Ethanol, and serves on the Bay Delta Water Authority, a
position appointed to him by the governor. He credits his
brothers in AGR, especially Bill Genasci, Noble Ruler at
the time, for encouraging him to run for Ag Senator and
President for the student body of Fresno State, which truly
was the birth of his political career. One of his memories of
AGR is constructing the flag pole at the Alpha Sigma house
alongside his 15 pledge brothers.
