also provide excellent opportunities for reduced energy costs. For lighting that positively impacts patient care, you can depend on Kenall.
Aesthetics
Sealed for Infection Control
Kenall products not only meet the most stringent performance
standards in the industry, but they have been designed to meet the
highest architectural standards for medical office and healthcare
facilities. By delivering low glare, appropriate color temperature
and high performance illumination, Kenall’s healthcare fixtures add
attractive architectural details to MRI and surgical suites, patient
rooms, exteriors, corridors, public spaces, and staff areas.
A key performance requirement for healthcare luminaires is that
they remain contaminant free. With this in mind, Kenall conducts
performance testing on these fixtures to ensure that they meet or
exceed relevant industry standards. Whether your project requires
luminaires that stand up to the most rigorous cleaning protocols
(NSF2 Splash Zone), maintain critical environmental barriers to guard
against surface viruses (IP65 and K230), or light surgical suites
without interfering with sensitive electrical devices (MIL-STD 461F),
Kenall offers strong, viable solutions.
Appropriate Light Levels for the Application
The functional requirements of specialized healthcare environments
often determine their lighting needs. From gentle, ambient patient
room luminaires to high illuminance surgical suite lighting, Kenall

Safe Operation – No EMI Interference
Lighting fixtures within a healthcare environment must not produce
emissions that interfere with the performance of sensitive medical
equipment. All Kenall MedMaster™ products designed for use in
applications that employ such equipment have been tested by
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) professionals and found to be
in compliance with MIL STD 461F. In addition, MedMaster surgical
systems meet the tough European Certification (CE) Standards,
which specifically address electrical devices used in operating rooms.
Similarly, MRI systems utilize powerful magnets capable of propelling
ferrous metal objects into the scanner envelope at dangerously high
velocities. They also emit powerful radio frequency (RF) pulses that
can interfere with other electronic equipment in the suite. Equally
as important, machine generated images can be compromised by
externally generated RF emissions. As a result, Kenall MedMaster
MRI luminaires have been designed to be free of ferrous metals, do
not create objectionable interference, nor are they susceptible to
these powerful MRI machine RF pulses. To insure the authenticity of
these claims, Kenall provides our exclusive ScanSafe Guarantee
(see pg 37 for details).

Kenall Testing
Committed to Led Technology
LED sources present an ideal solution for healthcare lighting. Low
energy consumption and high efficacy, in concert with an extended
lamp life and low heat output, create the ideal source for many
healthcare applications. The substantial lamp life of an LED also
reduces its maintenance requirements, which limits the potential risk
of damage during routine maintenance. In addition, LED sources
emit very little EMI or RFI emissions, contain no toxic mercury and
emit no harmful UV or infrared radiation, creating a truly green
source. Its modular design facilitates product upgrades, reducing the
material that ends up in landfills, further increasing
its sustainability.
Led Product Warranty
In addition to the standard product warranty, Kenall warrants
LED lamps and internal power regulation components for a period
of five years from the date of the invoice against defects in materials
and workmanship that result in a fixture lumen depreciation of 30%
or greater. Lumen depreciation is compared to the published lumen
output of the product on the date of manufacture per IESNA
LM-79-08 reporting procedures. Normal accumulation of
particulates on the optical surfaces shall not be factored into the
lumen depreciation.
Kenall Sophistication in Testing

BEST PRACTICES: SURGICAL SUITE LIGHTING
Performance Requirements

Sealed for infection control
Mitigation of electromagnetic interference (EMI)
Provide maximum uniformity between the three
zones of the suite
Kenall’s MedMaster™ family has been specifically designed to
meet the varied demands of the most challenging healthcare
environments. Ideal for use in today’s highly specialized surgical
suites, MedMaster luminaires are sealed against infectious
contaminants and meet critical Military Standard 461F (Air Force/
Navy Fixed) in order to provide effective light levels without
disturbing sensitive electrical devices. In addition, the MedMaster
Series provides quality illumination, addressing the unique
requirements of all three zones within the surgical suite.
Sealed for Infection Control
In order to maintain the operating room’s environmental integrity,
surgical suite luminaires must be sealed against intrusion from
any infection-carrying contaminants from either the room side or
from the plenum side. This seal must be able to withstand rigorous
cleaning protocols using harsh cleaning chemicals without corroding
or releasing toxic materials into the space. By utilizing cold rolled
steel housings, antimicrobial finishes, stainless steel fasteners, holefree seam-welded construction, and smooth exterior lenses, Kenall’s
MedMaster surgical suite luminaires have earned an IP65 rating
indicating a waterproof seal capable of withstanding direct hosedown, as well as the National Sanitation Foundation’s (NSF) listing for
use in “Splash Non-Food Zones” signaling the fixture’s cleanability—
both highly desirable listings in the surgical suite setting. MedMaster
luminaires meet and often exceed relevant industry standards to
ensure they remain contaminant free.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Mitigation
The concern regarding electromagnetic interference between
luminaires and sensitive surgical equipment is ever-present in
surgical suites. Additionally, providing surgical teams with multilevel switching or dimming is highly desirable within the surgical
suite setting. Kenall’s surgical suite luminaires meet both of these
criteria by utilizing advanced dimming ballasts. In fact, when tested
by EMI professionals, MedMaster luminaires have been found to
meet Military Standard 461F (Air Force/Navy Fixed); the military
standard most widely recognized for determining safe levels of
electromagnetic interference within the healthcare environment.
Maintain safe levels of radiated and conducted
emissions when equipped with electronic or
dimming systems
Lighting equipment must not produce electromagnetic emissions that interfere
with the performance of other equipment in the operating room. For many years,
military (MIL) standards have been utilized to identify dangerous electromagnetic
interference (EMI) and develop appropriate testing criteria. Professional EMI
measurements conducted by a certified, independent test laboratory are
necessary to ensure appropriate and unbiased application of MIL standards for
fixtures to be used in operating room settings.
Kenall’s MedMaster™ Supplementary Operating Room Lighting Systems have
been tested by EMI professionals and found to be in compliance with MIL
Standard 461F. In addition, MedMaster surgical systems meet the tough
European Certification (CE) standards that specifically address electrical devices
used in operating rooms.
MedMaster surgical lighting systems meet MIL and CE standards for:
• Conducted Emissions
• Radiated Emissions
• Harmonic Fluctuations
• Voltage Fluctuations

Advanced Optics
Due to the complex nature of the surgical suite, effective lighting
must not only meet the required light levels, but also maximize the
uniformity between the three zones of which it is comprised: the
immediate surgical area, the secondary surgical area (used for prep
and clean up), and the perimeter area. MedMaster supplementary
operating room luminaires feature cutting edge optical systems
specifically designed to achieve maximum uniformity between
all three zones within the suite and minimize eye-fatigue during
extended procedures. Additionally, Kenall surgical suite fixtures are
designed and engineered to provide maximum delivered lumens to
reduce the number of luminaires required, and free up more space
for other essential equipment within the ceiling. Kenall’s MedMaster
family delivers quality illumination and precise placement of light—
critical performance requirements of lighting fixtures within the
surgical suite.

Provide Immunity To Dangerous Radiated
and Conducted Emissions
Create a Leak-Proof Barrier Between the Plenum
and Operating Room
MedMaster™ surgical systems have been independently tested and
verified to meet CE performance criteria with Kenall's patented
SureShield™ stainless steel mesh screen for the following areas of
immunity:
Surgical suites employ positively pressurized interiors to minimize
the intrusion of contaminants. To this end, surgical suites must be
free of holes, gaps, or other openings that could allow leakage and
thereby compromise the effectiveness of the room’s pressure-based
contamination barrier. From this perspective, lighting fixtures used in
such environments have leakage-based performance requirements
very similar to bio-containment environments to seal off the room.
With this in mind, Kenall surgical suite luminaires are designed and
engineered to meet the stringent performance criteria required
to provide a leak-proof barrier between the flange and ceiling,
preventing any contaminants from entering around the luminaire
from the plenum.
• Voltage dips, interruptions, and variations
• Radiated 60Hz magnetic fields from power lines, transformers,
and motors
• Electrical fast transient arcing of contacts on nearby power and
signal lines
• Surge voltage from lightning
• Radiated electromagnetic fields from walkie-talkies and
commercial radio station broadcasts
• Electrostatic discharge
• Conducted radio frequency
Toxin-Free, Corrosion Resistant, and Easy to Clean
MedMaster's internal components are isolated from the surrounding
environment. This isolation protects the environment from heat,
sparks, arcing, dirt, dust, moisture, air pressure differences, and
other conditions that would adversely affect processes or safety
in the room. In fact, every MedMaster surgical lighting system
carries the IP65 rating – a rating that proves the fixture’s dust-tight
performance and water jet protection.
Cold rolled steel housings, 1,000-hour salt spray tested
antimicrobial finishes, stainless steel fasteners, hole-free seamwelded construction, and smooth exterior lenses make MedMaster
surgical suite lighting fixtures toxin-free, easy to clean, and corrosion
resistant. In addition, MedMaster surgical fixtures have earned the
National Sanitation Foundation’s (NSF) listing for use in “Splash/
Non-Food Zones”– a listing highly applicable to operating room
environments for cleanability.

BEST PRACTICES: MRI/IMAGING SUITE LIGHTING
Performance Requirements
•
•
•
•
•
•
Non-ferrous construction
Mitigation of electromagnetic interference (EMI)
Sealed for infection control
Dimmable LED technology for enhanced operational safety and patient comfort
Healing Lights to optimize patient Comfort
Designed to promote ease of maintenance
MRI imaging suites present a unique lighting environment. Kenall’s
MRI/imaging suite luminaires employ sealed housings and nonferrous materials, in combination with dimmable LED technology, to
deliver safe and dependable illumination in suites equipped
with even the most powerful and advanced MRI equipment.
Providing the patient with pleasing aesthetics, exceptional visual
comfort, dimming and scene setting, these fixtures transform
traditionally intimidating, institutional spaces into more comfortable,
calming environments.
Non-ferrous construction
MRI systems utilize powerful magnets capable of propelling objects
containing ferrous metal into the scanner envelope at dangerously
high velocities. As a result, it is critical that MRI luminaires be free of
any ferrous metals. Kenall’s complete line of MedMaster™ luminaires
for MRI/imaging suites are designed and built to these standards,
without compromising Kenall’s signature performance and durability.
EMI Mitigation
Historically, one of the most problematic areas of lighting MRI suites
has been electromagnetic interference (EMI). Not only are MRI
systems highly sensitive to EMI emissions from lighting fixtures, MRI
scanners themselves emit RF pulses that can negatively affect the
operational performance of lighting equipment.
As a result, fluorescent sources and AC power are rarely utilized in
MRI suites. While this change by itself has helped mitigate some EMI
related issues, it has not solved them all. To achieve an appropriately
lit MRI environment free of problematic EMI, all potential sources
of interference must either be successfully filtered or completely
eliminated. Kenall’s MedMaster line for MRI/imaging suites meets
Military Standard 461F; the most widely recognized standard for
determining safe levels of EMI within healthcare settings.
Dimmable LED Technology
Kenall’s MedMaster line of luminaires for MRI/imaging suites utilize
LED lamp sources due to their long life and energy efficiency. In
addition, dimming is an important feature for patient comfort and
operational safety during MRI procedures. While staff functions and
maintenance often require high light levels, low levels are employed
during MRI/imaging procedures to enhance patient comfort and
reduce anxiety. Kenall’s LED luminaires for imaging suites are
dimmable, providing the MRI suite technician the ability to tailor
light levels appropriately.
Healing Lights to Optimize Patient Comfort
Sealed for Infection Control
Just as in any clinical setting, infection control is an important
consideration when lighting the MRI/imaging suite. Lighting systems
must be sealed against intrusion by infectious contaminants,
be easy to clean, and be able to withstand the most rigorous
cleaning protocols without corroding or introducing toxicity into
the environment. In support of this requirement, Kenall’s MRI suite
luminaires carry antimicrobial finishes, ingress protection ratings,
and NSF2 listings, signaling that they contribute to safe and
sanitary environments.
www. kenall.com
P: 800-4-Kenall
Healthcare facility personnel know the importance of patient
comfort during MRI/imaging procedures. MedMaster CleanScene™
(CSMRI Series) Recessed Graphic Lightbox luminaires provide
soothing images that create a serene ambience, helping the patient
take the focus off the medical procedure. CleanScene luminaires
utilize high resolution graphic images, making them the most
attractive line of backlit luminaires in the industry.
Ease of Maintenance
Maintenance of MRI/imaging equipment is expensive due to the
downtime involved. Additionally, maintaining the equipment
involves the inherent risk of tools being left behind, opening up the
possibility of electromagnetic interference causing damage to
the patients or machine. By employing long life LEDs, tool-less
access, smooth surfaces and antimicrobial finishes, Kenall’s MRI/
imaging suite luminaires have been designed for ease of installation
and maintenance.

To assure a trouble-free installation, Kenall provides detailed
configuration and installation sheets and technical support. If
Kenall's installation instructions are followed and confirmed,
Kenall will provide the industry's first guarantee against fixture
interference and susceptibility.
Proper installation and configuration of lighting and supporting
equipment in MRI/imaging suites is critical in ensuring successful
operation, patient safety and comfort, and optimum scan/image
resolution. In addition to non-ferrous fixture construction and proper
room shielding, special low-voltage DC power supplies, RF filtering,
and shielded, grounded conduit are essential elements to successful
installation.

MedMaster™ External Power Supply
Alternating Current (AC) is typically not used in MRI rooms due to its potential to interfere with the MRI’s own internal electronics or distort
its digital image. Low-Voltage DC is the most appropriate power type for MRI suite lighting due to its cleanliness, reliability, and inherent
safety. The MedMaster™ external power supply (MRIPS-312), which converts AC to DC power, is compatible with all Kenall MRI fixtures.

Sealed for infection control
Multi-function capability
Wayfinding capability
Aesthetic appeal
Ease of maintenance and cleanability
Patient room lighting must accommodate the needs of both patient
and caregiver. The overall patient experience is enhanced when
lighting is well planned and controlled. Lighting requirements within
the patient room differ based on the task to be performed, including
resting, patient examination, charting, reading, and wayfinding.
Additionally, the design of patient rooms is increasingly inspired
by residential bedrooms in an effort to optimize patient comfort.
Specifically designed to meet these challenges, Kenall’s MedMaster™
family is task specific, providing both multi-function and headwall
illumination as necessary.
Sealed for Infection Control
Like most healthcare luminaires, patient room fixtures must
promote and support effective infection control. The fixtures in
Kenall’s MedMaster series are NSF2 listed signaling their cleanability,
and carry ingress protection ratings to protect the patient from
harmful airborne and surface contaminants. MedMaster’s onepiece, seam-welded housing construction, one-piece doorframe,
and antimicrobial finish are key to maintaining the environmental
integrity of the patient room.
Multi-Function Capability
The patient room requires different illumination levels for different
tasks, including ambient room, patient exam, task, patient chart,
patient reading and night lighting. Often, multiple patients share a
room resulting in the need for individual reading and task lighting
to accommodate individual activities. With the trend toward private
patient rooms on the rise, the need for general ambient lighting
within patient rooms is also increasing. Kenall offers multi-function
luminaires to meet a wide variety of patient room needs.
Kenall’s MedMaster series includes task specific, multi-function
ceiling and headwall fixtures. Our newest additions to this versatile
multi-function family are the MedMaster Envela® Motorized Exam
(MEAE), and MedMaster Ambient Exam series (MAEC)—both
offering ambient and exam lighting within a single fixture. With the
touch of a button, the motorized exam fixture enables the physician
to adjust the position of the focused exam light anywhere it’s
needed on the patient—from head to toe.
Wayfinding Capability
At night, wayfinding or step lighting within the patient room can be
critical to both caregiver and patient safety. MedMaster's Contour™
low profile LED step lights are ADA compliant and available in an
array of shapes, LED wattages, and LED color options to assist in
wayfinding. The Contour’s smooth, comforting profile coupled
with soft, ambient illumination also serves to promote healing and
wellness within the patient room.
www. kenall.com
P: 800-4-Kenall
Aesthetic Appeal
Through their subtle delivery of light, MedMaster ambient room
fixtures provide an aesthetically pleasing environment for patients
and staff. In a continuing effort to optimize patient comfort,
contemporary patient room design often mimics residential
bedrooms. MedMaster ambient luminaires provide the lighting
designer with an ideal design tool to achieve a residential look and
feel within the patient room while still meeting the functional needs
of the healthcare setting.
Ease of Maintenance & Cleanability
A variety of MedMaster luminaires feature hinged doorframes
and tool-less access for ease of installation and maintenance.
By specifying the IP65 ingress barrier door for ceiling mount
applications, the fixture is sealed from dust, dirt and moisture
penetration, for even easier cleaning and maintenance. Kenall
also offers long life LED lamp sources, which minimize the need
for relamping. Kenall’s MedMaster patient room luminaires offer
standard antimicrobial finishes, and have been designed and
listed to NSF2 in order to withstand even the most aggressive

Patient Room Lighting Considerations
Effective patient room lighting must balance both the aesthetic and analytic aspects of patient care. While patient comfort is certainly of
primary importance, caregiver performance remains the most critical component in determining patient outcome. As a result, variable
lighting options—with switch control and dimming capabilities—become essential to an effective patient room lighting design. The diagram
below describes each functional area of the patient room and the IES recommended footcandle levels required to effectively light each area.
This section details the solutions Kenall offers to meet these recommended levels, including lighting fixtures that facilitate general /ambient
room, patient bed, nightlight, casual chair and night observation needs.
Night Observation
Healthcare professionals require
sufficient light in the patient room
for reading of charts without
disturbing the sleep of the patient.
Recommended levels are 1.5 - 6 fc.
Casual Chair
Patient Bed
Dimming or multiple switching levels
required for various activities
Exam
25 - 100 fc
Reading 10 - 40 fc.
General
2.5 - 10 fc
General
Lighting for guest chairs should be
between 7.5 - 30 fc.
Ambient light levels should be
between 2.5 - 10 fc.

SoftStep Contour™ LED Step Light New!
Patient rooms, hospital corridors, and adjacent areas require an environment that promotes healing and wellness. At night, ambient
or wayfinding lighting in these areas needs to be subtle, serene, and glare free, which Kenall’s SoftStep Contour™ achieves via a
field-adjustable dimming option of 100%, 50% or 25% of full brightness. Amber LEDs should be considered in the patient room to
minimize the lamp’s effect on the patient’s circadian rhythm. Available in a variety of shapes, orientations, finish colors, and LED options,
Kenall’s smooth, low profile Contour LED step light (MCSL Series) is NSF listed and provides an array of aesthetically soothing yet highly
functional choices for wayfinding illumination.

STATION LIGHTING
Performance Requirements

Sealed for infection control
Appropriately placed lighting
Lighting considerations
Wayfinding capability
Dependable and effective signage, exit & emergency lighting
One of the primary requirements of corridor lighting within the
healthcare environment is the ability to ease transitions to adjacent
areas. Kenall offers a variety of luminaires to match the varied
needs of corridor and nurses station lighting. While sconces and
downlights deliver soothing corridor illumination, step lights and
exit signs effectively assist patrons and staff with wayfinding, and
undercabinet task lighting supports a variety of caregiver duties.
Sealed for Infection Control
Although ancillary to the patient room, corridor and nurses’ stations
are not immune to airborne contaminants. Therefore, lighting for
this space must support the infection control protocols established
by the facility. Doing so ensures the protection of patients,
caregivers, visitors and staff alike. To this end, Kenall provides NSF
listed corridor and nurses’ station lighting with sealed housings,
one-piece doorframes, smooth lenses and antimicrobial finishes—
assisting with effective control of infection throughout
the facility.
Appropriately Placed Lighting
Corridor and nurses’ stations must support a variety of physician and
nursing duties, including the charting, monitoring, and medicating
of patients. Linear task lighting is often the most effective for
situations where high quality task illumination is required. Kenall’s
Stratalume™ is one of the most comprehensive and versatile families
of high performance undercabinet task lighting solutions available,
providing easily configurable, quality task lighting.
Kenall’s ADA compliant Auracyl sconce has been designed to meet
the aesthetic and functional challenges of corridor, waiting room
and nurses’ station lighting. The Auracyl provides an understated
elegance that complements a wide range of interior designs via its
incandescent, linear fluorescent, compact fluorescent or dimmable
LED lamp sources. The Auracyl is available in a variety of standard
colors, or an extended selection of custom colors—including
antimicrobial finishes in white or black—along with a selection of
textures and patterns that give the designer an extensive palette
of aesthetic options.
Lighting Considerations
Corridor and Nurses’ Station lighting present some unique lighting challenges, including the ever present control of communicable
disease. In support of this critical function, it is recommended that
fixtures in corridors and nurses’ stations be sealed to facilitate regular cleaning protocols. Also, because corridors are transitional spaces
that enable patrons and staff to move between task areas, corridor
fixtures need to deliver light levels symbiotic to adjacent task areas
to minimize the amount of visual adaptation required. Additionally,
when patients are transferred they are looking up at the ceiling,
which makes glare a significant consideration, but when they are
confined to bed, corridor lighting must correspond to day (5-20 horizontal footcandles) and night (2.5-10 horizontal footcandles) cycles
while supporting the performance of patient observation tasks.
To accommodate the range of light levels required in corridor and
www. kenall.com
P: 800-4-Kenall
nurses’ station applications, the IES has established recommended
light levels based on patient care level, which Kenall has taken into
account during the development of our MedMaster™ family of
healthcare luminaires.
Wayfinding Capability
At night, corridor ambient lighting, wayfinding or step lighting can
be critical to both caregiver and patient safety. The MedMaster™
SoftStep Contour™ low-profile LED step light provides an array of
shapes, LED wattages, and LED color options to assist in corridor
wayfinding, and a die-cast housing for optimal durability. These low
profile ADA compliant step lights, field adjustable to 100%, 50%
or 25% of full output, provide an aesthetically pleasing, ambient
option for corridor settings.
Dependable & Effective Signage,
Exit & Emergency Lighting
Corridors and nurses stations depend on signage, and exit &
emergency lighting to address patient and facility flow. Kenall’s
Millenium Metrex™ extensive offering of signage, exit and
emergency products includes a choice of single or double faced
units, high power battery packs, integrated combo units, as well
as standard, architectural, and satellite/low level exit remote heads.
With a bright, evenly illuminated face that’s easily visible without
being obtrusive, Metrex LEDs are under-driven to provide even
longer life. Metrex also utilizes the highest quality injection molded
polycarbonate housings, baseplates, mounting components and
an impact-resistant polycarbonate lens for unsurpassed durability.
Offering long life LED options in combination with Kenall’s signature
durability, you can depend on our comprehensive selection of
signage, exit and emergency lighting to safely guide occupants
around the facility.

Behavioral Healthcare Lighting
BEST PRACTICES:
BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE LIGHTING
Performance Requirements
• Sealed for safety and security
• Multi-function capability
Many healthcare facilities contain patient rooms specifically
designed for patients exhibiting unpredictable and sometimes
destructive behavior. Lighting for these spaces must be sufficiently
robust to withstand such abuse, while still providing maximum
visibility, wayfinding, glare reduction, and the use of controls to
support mental health and wellness. Tamper resistant luminaires are
also recommended to promote the safety and security of the patient
and staff.
As a result, Kenall’s behavioral health luminaires combine the
functional performance of our standard healthcare line with the
durability of our Mighty Mac™ correctional products. Kenall’s
behavioral health series are designed to meet the varied needs
within this market space—running the spectrum from the most
impenetrable and unbreakable products on the market today to a
tamper-resistant products with a residential look and feel.
Sealed for Safety and Security
While it is important that luminaires in any healthcare setting are
sealed for infection control, sealed fixtures in a behavioral health
setting also serve to promote the safety and security of the patient.
With detention grade housings, polycarbonate lensed doorframes,
and tamper-resistant fasteners, Kenall’s behavioral health luminaires
are designed to resist the most violent attempts at tampering and
concealment in order to prevent self injury—a critical component of
behavioral health lighting.
Multi-function Capabilities
While Kenall’s behavioral health luminaires are designed with the
durabilitiy of our Mighty Mac correctional products, they also
offer the multi-functionality often seen in healthcare patient room
applications. These luminaires meet a range of listings that make
them suitable for healthcare settings, including ingress protection
ratings signaling their cleanability.
Designed for Durability
Kenall’s MedMaster MM Series combines the functionality and
performance of our standard healthcare fixtures with the durability
of our Mighty Mac correctional line and is designed with the finest
materials and workmanship for rugged construction.

Lighting Considerations For Behavioral
Health Settings
The lighting requirements for behavioral healthcare facilities
merge the infection control and patient comfort components of
general healthcare settings with the tamper and impact resistant
components typical of correctional facilities. One of the most critical
considerations of behavioral healthcare lighting is the mitigation of
attempts at self injury, which dictates that the fixture be devoid of
sharp corners or features that would accommodate objects being
tied to it. And because the general rule of thumb is that the more
subdued the lighting, the more cooperative the patient, multiple
level switching and dimming are also highly desirable features in
luminaires for behavioral health settings.

Life safety code compliant
Wayfinding capability
Durable construction
Long-life LEDs
The primary role of signage, exit and emergency lighting in healthcare facilities is to address patient and facility flow. Kenall’s Metrex™
exit and emergency lighting and signage is a best-in-class product
line combining state-of-the-art LED technology, advanced optical
performance, and legendary Kenall durability in a visually pleasing
package.
Life safety code compliant
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has established Life
Safety Code® requirements specific to the ‘Illumination of Means of
Egress’, addressing the illumination levels and duration required of
various egress lighting applications. All Millenium Metrex luminaires
have been designed and engineered to meet or exceed these
mission critical NFPA Life Safety Code requirements.
Wayfinding
Featuring bright, evenly illuminated faces with red or green exit
stencils and remote operating capabilities, you can depend on
Kenall’s exit and emergency lighting and signage to safely guide
hospital patrons out of large, potentially confusing areas efficiently
and effectively. Offering a variety of lamp types and configurations,
Metrex is designed to light variably sized paths of egress.
Durable, Rugged Construction
Kenall’s Metrex exit, emergency & signage lighting products are built
using the highest quality injection molded polycarbonate housings,
baseplates and mounting components. These fixtures carry ingress
protection ratings to protect against the penetration of moisture,
dirt, and unsightly debris, NSF listings indicating the product is easily
cleanable in support of infection control requirements, and meet
NFPA 101 and UL 924 standards to ensure their safe operation. The
Metrex series also offers a standard ambient temperature rating of
10°C to 45°C, by specifying the optional cold weather package, the
fixture is rated to -45°C.
LED Technology for Long Life
A variety of Kenall’s signage, exit & emergency luminaires are
available with energy efficient LED lamp sources that are underdriven to increase life (up to 50,000 hours). By utilizing this
technology, the lamps contain no filament, making the fixtures ideal
for high vibration areas. Since the fixtures require less batteries,
maintenance is reduced while sustainability is enhanced. Various
fixtures can also be specified with an optional cold weather package,
rated to -45°C (-49°F).

Healthcare signage is significant to the patient /visitor’s overall experience, and should successfully address patient and facility flow,
emergency management, stress reduction, and community outreach. The visitor’s ability to maneuver the facility, whether for a surgical
procedure, patient visit, wellness seminar or host of other reasons, often directly influences their level of satisfaction. Therefore, the impact
of signage—both on the patient and the facility— cannot be understated. Signage needs can vary greatly, and are often influenced by
facility size, complexity, age, configuration, and patron diversity.

Stairwell
Stairwells pose a particular challenge in emergency lighting because changes in elevation demand luminaires that can meet required
illumination levels on both stairs and landings.
In addition, unsupervised stairwells are prone to vandalism. Kenall's emergency luminaires meet these challenging illumination requirements
head on while exhibiting legendary Kenall resistance to physical abuse and tampering.
Whether your emergency lighting needs call for a 3' or 6' wide path of egress there are Metrex™ lighting systems capable of exceeding Life
Safety Code requirements even with impressively wide luminaire spacings. Please refer to the Emergency Lighting Product Selector Chart on
the previous page to find the emergency systems that will best meet your specific needs.

Integrated controls
Motion sensing capability
Durable, sealed construction
Emergency lighting
Kenall offers occupancy sensing lighting products to effectively
control the lighting needs of intermittently occupied areas. Through
the integration of control systems that provide flexible time, distance
and daylight settings, optional light levels and cost savings can be
realized.
Integrated Controls
To fully accommodate the fluctuating activity levels while conserving
energy, Kenall has designed fixtures with integrated controls that
detect occupancy and daylight levels—with adjustments for both
time delay and sensitivity. Kenall’s energy saving lighting systems
with integrated controls are ideal for use in healthcare facility
stairwells and points of egress.
Motion Sensing Capability
Kenall’s motion sensing luminaires have an integrated sensor
that can be adjusted to detect occupancy up to 20 feet away.
The sensor’s integrated daylight sensitivity adjusts from 2 to 200
footcandles and its time delay can be set from 10 seconds to 30
minutes. The sensor’s daylight hold-off feature will override the
sensitivity control setting, keeping the fixture off if sufficient ambient
daylight is detected.
Durable, Sealed Construction
Designed to take exceptional physical punishment, Kenall’s motion
sensing luminaires for stairwell applications carry ingress protection
ratings to protect against the penetration of moisture, dirt, and
unsightly debris. Prone to vandalism, these luminaires are sealed and
gasketed to provide Kenall’s legendary resistance to physical abuse
and tampering. In addition, these fixtures are ADA compliant, and
carry our exclusive Peace of Mind Guarantee® against breakage for
the life of the product installation (see pg. 105 for specific details).
Emergency Lighting
Stairwells must meet the illumination levels required for both stairs
and landings, and as a result pose particular emergency lighting
challenges due to inherent changes in elevation. Kenall’s emergency
luminaires effectively meet these challenges by providing the
required illumination levels in all areas of the stairwell. Whether your
emergency lighting need calls for a 3' or 6' wide path of egress,
Kenall’s Metrex Series offers systems capable of exceeding Life Safety
Code requirements for a wide variety of spatial configurations.
Occupancy Sensor Features
Operation
The sensor operates at 120 or 277 VAC and utilizes Super High
Frequency technology to control lighting based on occupancy.
It sends out electromagnetic waves that bounce off nearby
surfaces and uses the Doppler principle to analyze changes in the
return waves to detect motion in the area (similar to the way that
ultrasonic sensor technology performs).
Sensitivity – The sensor has a range of 0 to 20 feet. It is able to
sense through solid objects, glass, and dense materials. Once the
sensitivity is set to the desired level, the luminaire should be tested
to determine if the sensor detects movement correctly. The sensor
setting can be adjusted up or down for the correct application.
When motion is detected, the sensor turns on the luminaire, unless
the ambient light level is greater than the daylighting setpoint
(if enabled), or turns off the luminaire when no motion is detected
for the preset time delay.
Light Level – Adjust the daylight setting if the installation has
sufficient ambient light in the area to keep the luminaire off. Set the
time delay to minimum and then adjust the daylight setting to the
appropriate level. The daylight setting can be adjusted up or down
(2 to 200 footcandles) for the correct application with separate
adjustment to the time delay setting. Note: The sensor’s daylight
hold-off feature will override the sensitivity control setting, keeping
the fixture off, if sufficient ambient daylight is present.
Control Adjustments
Time delay – The sensor automatically turns off the light after the
coverage area has been vacant for the selected time delay. For high
traffic areas, the time delay should be set close to minimum levels.
In low traffic areas, to maximize energy savings, the time delay
should be set closer to the maximum settings. The sensor provides a
10 second to 30 minute range of adjustability.

As maintenance and operational expenses escalate, healthcare facilities are challenged to find ways of reducing costs by controlling energy.
Lighting in intermittently occupied areas, when properly controlled, poses the greatest potential for cost savings without sacrificing safety or
performance. Kenall offers integrated occupancy sensors in a number of stairwell and egress lighting products for use where the potential
for energy savings is substantial. Further savings can be realized through the use of daylighting controls, which reduce luminaire output
based on a pre-set level of daylight detection.

for ease of installation and maintenance. Quick disconnects
ensure easy replacement of ballasts, drivers and lamps. In addition,
utilizing long-life LEDs prolongs the fixture’s life to twice that of a
fluorescent lamp source.
Long Life LED Technology
Kenall’s Millenium and Herculux fixtures are available in a variety
of lamp sources, including LED options. Kenall's LED fixtures are
expertly designed and engineered to provide in excess of 50,000
hours of service life. This energy efficient, environmentally friendly,

plane. Only fixtures meeting IDA’s stringent
horizontal cutoff criteria earn the IDA-Approved™ Dark Sky Friendly
fixture designation. As a result of their specially designed optical
systems that deliver full cutoff performance while reducing energy
consumption, Kenall’s Millenium Finite™, Millenium Edge™ and select
Herculux fixtures have earned this distinctive designation.
Kenall’s High Abuse luminaires are designed and built to take
exceptional physical punishment. When installed according to
our instructions, Kenall will repair or replace any unit
rendered inoperable due to physical abuse for the life of the
product installation.

efficacy ratings and max to min ratios exceed IES recommendations
for all LED engines offered. Available with three optics that include
a house-side shield, TekDek also offers an environmentally friendly
design for the perimeter of the parking structure.
Enhanced Light Distribution
Kenall’s TekDek Series delivers enhanced safety for garage patrons
via powerful efficacy ratings—the highest of all parking garage
luminaires in the DOE’s ‘Lighting Facts’ program at over 100 lumens
per watt. With an LED lamp source and lens specifically designed
to reduce glare, TekDek is a critical contributor to pedestrian and
vehicular safety. Available in nine different photometric patterns,
including multiple backlit-shielded options, the light can be directed
where needed without unnecessary spill. The fixture also provides
highly desirable uplighting and eliminates the cave effect typical of
other LED parking garage lighting systems.
Integrated Controls for Cost Savings & Rapid ROI
Whether designing a new structure or retrofitting an existing one,
TekDek’s cost and energy savings are significant when combined
with SmartSense controls. By utilizing an innovative new design
concept, the control system intelligently monitors both motion and
daylight, providing flexible dimming capabilities when the space
is unoccupied and/or when ambient daylight levels are detected.
Yielding an impressive return on investment of up to 1.2 years,
effective use of tax incentives and rebates can further reduce
costs—a winning proposition for healthcare facility managers.

TekDek SmartSense™ Control System
Sensing Occupancy and Daylight for Dramatic Energy Savings
A majority of the lighting control systems currently available for parking structures rely on individual occupancy control sensors per luminaire
that ‘cascade on’ one after the other, which can make the driving experience particularly hazardous. More complex systems are typically
expensive and are often accompanied by a significant ‘field-commissioning fee’.
Kenall’s SmartSense control system meets these challenges head on by utilizing an innovative new design concept. The control system
intelligently monitors both motion and daylight, providing flexible dimming capabilities when the space is unoccupied and/or when ambient
daylight levels are detected. SmartSense’s ability to dim light levels in response to occupancy and daylight represents significant cost and
energy savings for the healthcare facility owner or building manager.
Sensor
Control Module
TekDek Luminaire
The SmartSense sensor serves
as both a daylight sensing
photosensor and a passive
infrared occupancy sensor.
The SmartSense control module receives
input from one daylight sensor and up to
6 total occupancy sensors. Each control
module can service up to 32 luminaires using
0-10 volt dimming, but can be linked with
additional control modules to control an
unlimited number of luminaires even if only
one sensor is used. The control module can
be placed up to 3000 feet away from the
sensor.
This LED-driven luminaire has been specifically
designed for use with the SmartSense control
system and will quickly achieve full brightness
upon detecting motion in the space, and
will slowly dim back to standby mode once
occupancy is no longer detected.

Hosedown Ratings & Their Relation To Ip Ratings
Limitations of Wet & Hosedown Ratings –
UL Standards
The Importance of Recognized Standards
& Independent Testing
UL standards for “wet” type ratings only offer a wet location rating,
which simulates an outdoor rain condition. UL standards for a type
4 or NEMA 4 “hosedown” rating uses a 1 inch diameter nozzle
on a fire hose delivering 65 gallons of water per minute. Various
conditions exist where a fixture requires a rating better than a wet
location label but not NEMA 4. These conditions typically exist in
washdown applications where hose directed water or cleaning
agents will be directed at the fixture.
Other lighting manufacturers that claim a hosedown rating other
than NEMA or IP are not testing to recognized standards and cannot
have the tests confirmed or audited by an independent outside
testing agency.
Beware of statements such as "Tested to 75psi at 1 inch." No
reference is made to the volume of water that is leaving the nozzle
and impacting the product. In fact, high nozzle pressures typically
have low water volumes because the nozzle is restricting the flow of
water causing the pressure in the hose to increase, minimizing the
amount of water leaving the nozzle.
Benefits of Ingress Protection Ratings –
IEC standards
Regardless of the hose pressure, any water volume less than 3.3
gal/minute is less severe than the IP_5 test. The most relevant
characteristics are the diameter of the nozzle and the flow rate of
the water. The following chart shows the test characteristics for
various Standards.
The IP water rating of "5," described in IEC Standard 598, provides
an intermediate step between the rain rating and the NEMA 4
rating. It also provides an internationally accepted standard which
can be used to evaluate fixtures or any other electrical equipment,
and the test can be performed by an independent third party testing
agency for verification. Underwriters Laboratories in Northbrook,
Illinois investigates products and tests to the IEC standard.
MedMaster™ Ratings
Kenall’s MedMaster line of hosedown rated products are approved
by UL and CUL for IP ratings according to IEC Standard 598.
Dust-tight Protection
What are IEC Standards?
An additional test criterion that can be applied to fixtures is the
ability to exclude solid matter. The IP solid rating of "6" (IP6_)
means the fixture will be dust tight. The specified test requires that
the fixture be placed in a circulating talc atmosphere for 3 hours.
The particle size of the talc is a range of one to 75 microns and the
fixture is placed under negative pressure in an attempt to draw the
talc into the fixture. No talc should be found inside the fixture after
this test.

here in North America.

Nsf National Sanitation Foundation Listings
Fixtures for use in Food Processing, Handling
& Preparation
Kenall lighting fixtures for use in food processing, handling and
preparation areas have been investigated and listed by the National
Sanitation Foundation (NSF) as conforming to the requirements in
their criteria C2.
The purpose of criteria C2 is to insure that equipment located in a
food storage, handling, or preparation area will not compromise the
sanitation requirements for those areas. Equipment listed to criteria
C2 has been evaluated as to its corrosion resistance, cleanability and
exposed material.
Specifically, exposed materials shall withstand normal wear, the
corrosive action of foods, beverages, and cleaning compounds,
and the material itself shall not impart an odor, color, taste, or toxic
material to any food that would come in contact with it.
Within this category, NSF defines the surfaces of equipment as Food
Contact or Non-Food Contact surfaces. Food Contact surfaces are
further divided into areas as Food Zone, Splash Zone, and Non-Food
Zone, with Food Zone requirements being the most stringent and
Non-Food Zone being the least stringent.
A subcategory of Food Zone equipment is Non-Contact, i.e.
equipment in the Food Zone but not normally in contact with
the food.
Splash Zones (SN)
Kenall has two levels of fixture construction depending on the area
where the fixtures are being installed.
Our SN type construction is listed for use in Splash Zones and Non
Food Zones. All exposed sheet metal will be painted CRS, painted
aluminum, or anodized aluminum. Fasteners will be stainless steel,
and lenses can be acrylic, polycarbonate or tempered glass, all with
prisms on inside.
Food Zones (FN)
The higher level of construction is our FN type construction for Food
Zone/Non-Food Contact. Fixtures in this category are physically
located in food preparation and handling areas but do not come
in contact with the food under normal conditions. All exposed
sheet metal will be painted CRS, painted aluminum, or anodized
aluminum. Paint must meet U.S. Code of Federal Regulations,
Title 21 to be used in this application. Fasteners will be stainless
steel and removable without the use of a tool (thumbscrew type)
and the outer exposed lens must be an FDA approved Food Grade
polycarbonate material.
Kenall cannot recommend which level of construction is suitable for
your specific application as the final decision will rest
with the local inspector.
NSF2 — An NSF2 Listing denotes that the luminaire has been evaluated for corrosion resistance,
cleanability and the ability of exposed material to withstand normal wear. This supports the
infection control standards established by healthcare facilities as it indicates that the luminaire is
easy to sanitize.

Emi Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Testing & Military Standard 461F
Where is EMI a Concern?
Military Standard 461F
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) has long been a critical concern in
scientific and healthcare facilities where it can cause the malfunction
of life support and monitoring systems, surgical devices, and other
electrically sensitive medical and scientific equipment. In recent years,
concern over EMI has become widespread due to its potential impact
on communications, security systems, manufacturing equipment, and
a variety of sensitive electronic devices.
The most comprehensive, widely recognized and acknowledged
domestic EMI standard is Military Standard (MIL STD) 461F, a
mandatory standard for military hospitals and other EMI-sensitive
military facilities and a voluntary standard for public and private
facilities applications. MIL STD testing measurements cover both
radiated and conducted emissions in addition to maximum allowable
amounts of emitted energy based on both frequency range and field
strength.
Limitations of Required EMI Standards
Unlike the European Community, the United States has no
comprehensive standard for lighting-based EMI. Because
high-frequency electronic ballasts operate within radio,
television and other established communications bandwidths,
the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issues standards
for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) between certain devices as
well as maximum radiated electromagnetic emissions levels for some
equipment, including electronic ballasts.
FCC listings do not, however, provide a standard for fluorescent
lamps – also radiators of EMI – or for complete luminaires. Further,
the FCC does not issue standards for conducted emissions. The
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issues EMC standards for certain
medical devices operating outside the FCC’s jurisdiction, but these
standards typically do not apply to light fixtures.

The MIL-STD-461F testing procedures and requirements
appropriate to light fixtures are found under Navy and Air Force
Limits for Electronic Devices, with the specific testing information
for conducted emissions outlined in CE 102-1 and for radiated
emissions in RE 102-4. While both are designed to emulate worst
case operating conditions, both the test procedures and the
standards themselves are logical and reasonable.
Because MIL-STD-461F standards are harder to meet than either the
FCC or European Community standards, luminaires meeting them
pose the lowest possible likelihood of causing EMI-related problems.
MIL STD 461F — Military Standards testing measurements cover both radiated and conducted
electromagnetic emissions in addition to maximum allowable amounts of emitted energy based on
both frequency range and field strength. Luminaires meeting MIL STD 461F pose the lowest possible
likelihood of causing EMI-related issues.

Fed-Std-209E / Class 100 (Iso 5) Performance Standard And Test For Cleanliness Class
Cleanroom spaces are defined by their level of cleanliness, so these
spaces require lighting fixtures capable of supporting the highest
levels of environmental integrity related to the passage or production
of airborne particles. Only by selecting a fixture that has been tested
to accepted standards, can the specifier be confident that the fixture
is free of gaps or holes through which containments can enter a
controlled space, and does not itself produce objectionable levels of
particulate contamination.
Specifiers have traditionally used Federal Standard 209E (Airborne
Particulate Cleanliness Classes in Clean Rooms and Clean Zones)
to evaluate and specify cleanroom environments. In addition, the
International Standards Organization (ISO) has developed a more
comprehensive cleanroom rating metric, ISO 14644-1.
The chart (right) summarizes FED-STD-209E and cross references
definitions to the ISO standard.

A fixture’s performance related to cleanliness class can be
evaluated and certified to accepted test protocols based on the
aforementioned definitions of cleanroom class. Kenall measures
this performance with an independent testing lab’s Cleanliness
Class Compatibility Study (CRS-CCCS-GR2229), which evaluates a
fixture’s ability to meet cleanliness protocols in the various classes
of cleanrooms. This study measures and certifies the fixture’s ability
to seal out, and not produce, airborne particles as small as 0.1
micrometer. The applicable fixtures are rated to cleanliness standards
using the definitions of FED-STD-209E and ISO 14644-1, and are
labeled to the respective pertinent level of cleanliness.

K230 Performance Standard For Luminaire Leakage In Pressurized Environments
Large numbers of R&D, high-tech manufacturing and medical
facilities contain areas in which environmental isolation and the
prevention of cross-contamination are critical. Applications such
as cleanrooms, research labs and surgical suites must be kept free
of external contaminants while others, such as infectious disease
isolation areas and R&D bio-containment spaces, must prevent
contaminants from escaping.
The need for environmental isolation in these areas is so critical
that air pressure is used as a buffer against contamination. Positive
pressure is employed where the introduction of foreign matter
causes contamination, while negative pressure creates a barrier to
contaminant egress where containment is the critical issue.
111
Kenall’s K230 test, performed under controlled conditions by a
highly qualified independent testing lab, calls for a special airtight
chamber containing a pressure plenum fabricated to simulate the
type of ceiling surface to which the fixture will be mounted. The
plenum is then pressurized to the prescribed level and sealed,
with pressure readings recorded on a water gauge at five minute
intervals. To meet the K230 leakage prevention standard, the fixture
must be able to maintain two inches of pressure, plus or minus 10
percent, for 30 minutes.
When anything – including a lighting fixture – penetrates the ceiling,
it creates the potential for contaminant leakage. Consequently,
luminaires must be free of openings through which contaminants
can pass or that could result in a reduction of pressure. Simply put,
a key performance requirement for lighting fixtures in pressurized
environments is the ability to prevent leakage.
LIGHT FIXTURE
PLENUM
Leakage Prevention
Pressure Tested
Responding to the growing needs for increasingly more effective
techniques of containing dangerous organisms, standards for
bio-containment cabinets have rapidly advanced in recent years.
These cabinets employ negatively pressurized interiors to maximize
containment. To this end, they must be free of holes, gaps, or other
openings that could allow leakage and thereby compromise the
effectiveness of the cabinet’s pressure-based contamination barrier.
From this perspective, lighting fixtures used in larger negative
pressure environments to seal off ceiling enclosures have leakagebased performance requirements very similar to those of
bio-containment cabinets.
There is no mandatory U.S. standard specific to luminaire leakage
in pressurized applications. However, there is a widely accepted
leakage standard for cabinetry developed by the National Sanitation
Foundation (NSF) in conjunction with the American National
Standards Institute (ANSI): NSF49 Class II (laminar flow) Biosafety
Cabinetry. Section 6.2 of that standard, Pressure Decay/Soap
Bubble/Tracer Gas Leak can be effectively adapted to the testing
of light fixtures. Kenall refers to its proprietary adaptation as the
K230 Performance Standard for Luminaire Leakage in Pressurized
Environments.

Hospitals
Hospitals and other healthcare facilities contain areas where patients
infected with or tested for highly contagious or communicable
diseases, are isolated for observation and treatment. They contain
a variety of areas, including surgical suites, patient rooms and ICUs,
that use positive pressure as a barrier against contaminant ingress,
particularly dangerous pathogens. Fixtures complying with Kenall’s
K230 pressure testing standard are able to meet or exceed the
leakage prevention requirements for these applications – for both
contaminant ingress and the maintenance of target pressure levels.
Testing by a qualified laboratory, utilizing the K230 testing protocol,
is the best way available to ensure compliance levels comparable to
those required by the NSF49 standard, Section 6.2, because K230
procedures are based on those prescribed by NSF49 for biosafety
cabinetry. Thus, Kenall’s K230 determines a fixture’s ability to restrict
the passage or penetration of contaminants when subjected to
prescribed pressure level in either positive or negative pressure
environments. In short, it measures a fixture’s resistance to leakage
in virtually any pressurized environment.
