GENERAL SPRING TRAIL CONDITIONS, JULY 15:
DESCHUTES NATIONAL FOREST SUMMER TRAILHEADS/TRAILS
Summer trail access is well under way with approx.. 70% of Deschutes trails now cleared
of down trees. Snow is now mostly limited to patchy/sectional snow above 7,000’. Strong
to extreme Fall and Winter winds brought down thousands of trees on summer trails (and
access roads) and volunteers and trail crew have done a phenomenal job of clearing thousands
of down trees from trails. EXPECT TO ENCOUNTER DOWN TREES on trails that have not
yet been maintained! Recent snow at the higher elevations last week are a reminder to watch
weather forecasts closely and go prepared!
New interactive trail condition map!
Recently we released and interactive trail map to bring you more up-to-date trail
information. This program is yet a work in progress and continually being updated.

Sisters Ranger District summer trails/access:

Black Butte Trail – Snow free, cleared of down trees and in good condition. Hiker only
trail. Trailhead access is busy on weekends. Stay clear of the old cabin on the summit as it is
in poor condition and scheduled for removal.
Metolius River Trails – Cleared of down trees and in good condition. Hiker only trails; no
bikes or stock. Be aware of a large tree down on the west side trail just below Canyon Creek.
This tree has a temporary detour (recently improved) that some will find difficult to navigate.
We are working on a long term solution to this very large and difficult to remove tree. Later
this summer the Metolius River trails will receive approx. 100 replacement trail signs to
better direct hikers to various sites. Be aware of the over 100 restoration sites along the
river trails and please stay on the trails in these areas. These restored sites are improving
riparian and fish habitat; so important to wild and scenic qualities of the Metolius River basin.
Spring 2015, this very large tree fell
over the West Metolius River Trail
just downstream of Canyon Creek
Campground. Due to complications in
the removal of the tree in a remote
section of trail, a trail detour was
constructed up and around the tree.
This detour is steep and narrow, has
been recently improved and may yet be
a challenge for some hikers. Please
wear adequate footwear, seek
assistance and yield to less able hikers
when using this temporary detour. If
in doubt, don’t attempt it but use any
of the remaining miles of Metolius
River trails.

Mt. Jefferson Wilderness:
BEWARE! Since 2003 Brush Ck, Minto Lake, northern end of Jefferson Lake and
Sugar Pine Ridge Trails have been in a "no current maintenance" condition. With heavy
blowdown, dense brush, lack of identifiable trail surface and erosion due to B and B Fire
damage, these trails are considered impassable and are not recommended. In recent
years several hikers have reported becoming lost trying to follow these trails from the
west, with a few turning into search and rescue missions. Jefferson Lake Trail is
currently extremely difficult/challenging (likely impassable) for hikers beyond mile 3 and
impassable for stock as well due to dense brush and blow down.
Jefferson Lake TH – Jefferson Lake Trail – Snow free and accessible TH. Dense brush
has been cleared for 3.5 miles of this 8 mile trail. Limited clearing of down trees has also
occurred with “step overs” to 24” high remaining. Beyond the cleared section the brush is
again very dense, up to 8’ high and impassable except for the most experienced hikers
interested in a big challenge with hazardous trail travel. You will likely lose the overgrown trail
within 4-5 miles of the trailhead. Ticks have been heavy along this trail.
Brush Creek TH – TH blocked by brush and down trees. Brush Creek Trail currently
impassable to all traffic due to overgrown brush, loss of tread and heavy blow down.

TEN ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS:
“What are The Ten Essentials?”
”The Ten Essentials are items The Mountaineers recommends everyone carry on all trips. The Pacific
Northwest is a beautiful place that can be wild and unpredictable. Being prepared for anything is
essential. This is as important on short, local trips as it is on long, backcountry trips. It is easy to
forget first aid kits and warm layers short trips, but a short trip can quickly turn to a long trip if you
get lost or injured.”
“The Ten Essentials started as a list of ten simple items and is now a systems approach that guides you
in preparing for any trip in any season. The two basic questions are: (1) Can you respond positively to an
accident or emergency? (2) Can you safely spend a night or more out? Here is a list of The Ten
Essential Systems:
1. Navigation (map & compass)
2. Sun Protection (sun glasses, sun screen, lip balm)
3. Insulation (extra clothing)
4. Illumination (flashlight or headlamp, spare bulb & batteries)
5. First-Aid Supplies (gauze, tape, etc.)
6. Fire (fire starter, matches, lighter)
7. Repair Kit (knife, duct tape, tools, spare parts)
8. Nutrition (extra food)
9. Hydration (extra water, water purification)
10. Emergency Shelter (tarp, garbage bag)

mid-elevation summer trails and beginning on higher elevations. Strong winter storms
brought down possibly thousands of trees across area trails and road accesses. We
are seeing above normal downed trees on trails and roads and it’s been a challenging
spring/summer trail clearing season. Be prepared to encounter trees on area trails
over the coming months.
