SPEC NOTE DESCRIPTION: This section specifies the application of site applied paint finishes to new interior surfaces, including site painting of shop primed surfaces. The system designations and finish formulae are as specified by the Master Painters Institute (MPI). Products included in the Approved
Product Listing are performance tested for resistance to abrasion, scrub, stain and chemical resistance, cleanability, and application and hiding qualitites.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 References
SPEC NOTE: The latest edition of the following references shall be used and become a part of the Work under this Section as applicable; edit to suit project requirements.
.1 Architectural Painting Specifications Manual, Master Painters Institute (MPI).
Assurance
.2 Conform to latest MPI requirements for interior painting work including preparation and priming.
.3 Materials (primers, paints, coatings, varnishes, stains, lacquers, fillers, thinners, solvents, etc.) shall be in accordance with MPI Painting Specification Manual "Approved Product" listing and shall be from a single manufacturer for each system used.
.4 Other paint materials such as linseed oil, shellac, turpentine, etc. shall be the highest quality product of an approved manufacturer listed in MPI Painting Specification Manual and shall be compatible with other coating materials as required.
.5 Retain purchase orders, invoices and other documents to prove conformance with noted
MPI requirements when requested by [Consultant] [Engineer].
1.3 Environmental Performance Requirements
SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: Indoor air quality problems with paint applications can be reduced by specifying paints with a minimum E2 or E3 rating.
.1 Provide paint products meeting MPI "Environmentally Friendly" [E1], [E2] [E3] ratings based on VOC (EPA Method 24) content levels.
.2 Where indoor air quality (odour) is a problem, use only MPI listed materials having a minimum [E2] [E3] rating.
1.4 Inspection
.1 Interior painting and decorating work shall be inspected by a Paint Inspection Agency
(inspector) acceptable to the specifying authority and local Painting Contractors
Association. Painting contractor shall notify Paint Inspection Agency a minimum of one week prior to commencement of work and provide a copy of project painting specification, plans and elevation drawings (including pertinent details) as well as a Finish Schedule.

1.5 Submittals
.1 Submit product data and manufacturer's installation/application instructions for each paint and coating product to be used in accordance with Section [01330 - Submittal
Procedures].
.2 Submit WHMIS MSDS.- Material Safety Data Sheets in accordance with Section [01357 -
Hazardous Materials].
.3 Upon completion, submit records of products used. List products in relation to finish system and include the following:
.1 Product name, type and use.
.2 Manufacturer's product number.
.4 MPI Environmentally Friendly classification system rating.
.5 Manufacturer's Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
1.6 Samples
.4 Submit [duplicate] [200 x 300] mm sample panels of each [paint] [stain] [clear coating]
[special finish] with specified paint or coating in colours, gloss/sheen and textures required to MPI Painting Specification Manual standards submitted on the following substrate materials:
.1 [3 mm] [plate steel] for finishes over metal surfaces.
.2 [13 mm] [birch] plywood for finishes over wood surfaces.
.3 [50 mm] concrete block for finishes over concrete or concrete masonry surfaces.
.4 [13 mm] [gypsum board] for finishes over gypsum board and other smooth surfaces.
.5 [10 mm] [cedar] [hardboard] [siding] [plywood] for finishes over wood surfaces.
Control
.1 Provide mock-up in accordance with Section [01450 - Quality Control].
.2 When requested by [Consultant] [Engineer] [Paint Inspection Agency], prepare and paint designated surface, area, room or item (in each colour scheme) to requirements specified herein, with specified paint or coating showing selected colours, gloss/sheen, textures and workmanship to MPI Painting Specification Manual standards for review and approval. When approved, surface, area, room and/or items shall become acceptable standard of finish quality and workmanship for similar on-site work.
1.8 Delivery, Handling and Storage
.3 Labels shall clearly indicate:
.1 Manufacturer's name and address.
.2 Type of paint or coating.
.3 Compliance with applicable standard.
.4 Colour number in accordance with established colour schedule.

SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: Solvent free paints (low VOC) are preferable to conventional water-based (latex) paints. Low-toxicity water-based latex paints are considered safer than conventional latex paint.
2.1 Materials
.1 Paint materials listed in the MPI Approved Products List (APL) are acceptable for
.2 use on this project.
SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: Where choice of an "Environmentally Friendly" product is required, include the following:
Only qualified products with [E2] [E3] "Environmentally Friendly" rating are acceptable for use on this project.
SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: Note that E2 or E3 rated water-based paints have a lower VOC content that E2 or E3 solvent based paints. Refer to MPI Approved Products Listing for VOC content levels.
.3 Water-borne paints and stains, recycled water-borne surface coatings and water borne varnishes must meet a minimum "Environmentally Friendly" [E2] rating.
2.2 Colours
SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: In low toxicity paints, the tint is likely the component with the greatest environmental impact and health risks.
Ratings
.1 Paint gloss shall be defined as the sheen rating of applied paint, in accordance with the following values:

G3 - eggshell finish
G4 - satin finish
G5 - semi-gloss finish
G6 - gloss finish
G7 - high gloss finish

SPEC NOTE: Select appropriate paint system for surfaces to be painted and delete all other systems not required.
SPEC NOTE: Insert appropriate gloss level rating (G1, G2, etc.) in place of [insert gloss level]. Refer to MPI approved product listings to ensure that desired gloss level is available. Specific paint colours and gloss ratings should be indicated on Finish Schedules.
SPEC NOTE: Where both Custom Grade (typically one primer and one finish coat) and Premium
Grade (typically one primer and two finish coats) systems are used, each must be indicated on
Finish Schedule or on Drawings, or alternately, indicate system when it differs from the "typical" grade selected.
SPEC NOTE: Where choice of an "Environmentally Friendly" (i.e., low odour/VOC "green") product is required, specifier must consult MPI Product Selection Guide and select system/products having desired E1, E2 or E3 rating.
SPEC NOTE: For individual product selection and evaluations refer to MPI Approved Product List
(Chapter 5 of the MPI Architectural Painting Specification Manual).
SPEC NOTE: For specific interior surface preparation requirements refer to Chapter 3 of the MPI
Architectural Painting Specification Manual.
SPEC NOTE: Ensure that shop preparation and shop primers for interior structural steel and miscellaneous metals are compatible with field applied coatings. This can be done by incorporating the following notes within the appropriate steel work sections, "The use of temporary shop primers for all interior painted steel work will not be permitted unless of the type specified for such work within Painting specification Section C3040. Where non-complying primers are used this section of work shall completely remove same from all surfaces and prepare and prime surfaces in accordance with the requirements of Section C3040 for painted steel work at no additional cost to the Owner. A third party independent inspection agency shall periodically inspect all interior steel work to be painted for finish, surface preparation and application of required primers".
2.4 Interior Painting Systems
