Teaching children to be creative, confident thinkers

2013–2014 Catalog

Curriculum Assessment Professional Development Family Connection

Dear Colleagues:

At Teaching Strategies, we’re always thinking about and reevaluating the best ways to support the critical work you do every day. Over the years, that has meant expanding our product offerings, engaging with educators to support best practices, and committing to innovation in all of our resources.

But to us creating high-quality products is only a first step. While we know that high-quality curriculum and assessment resources can help lead to positive outcomes for children when implemented with fidelity, we also know that being able to implement a curriculum or an assessment with fidelity—given the realities of life in any early childhood classroom—is often a challenge. Having the best curriculum and assessment materials simply isn’t enough. Teachers also deserve high-quality support for implementation in order to teach effectively and provide the engaging and meaningful experiences that enable all children to thrive.

This year we are launching an exciting new suite of resources designed to do just that: enable programs to provide individualized professional support with implementation for teachers, right in their own classrooms. Coaching to Fidelity,

Preschool Edition and The Fidelity Tool, Preschool Edition are designed to be used in tandem. They assess how well The

Creative Curriculum

®

for Preschool and Teaching Strategies GOLD ® are being implemented in every classroom and offer support and strategies for optimal implementation. These comprehensive fidelity resources offer a clear road map for teachers—and those providing in-classroom support to teachers—toward continuous improvement, individualized professional growth, and ultimately, positive outcomes for children. Learn more on page 19.

Also new, and just as exciting, is the development of a brand-new Teaching Guide, available in Summer 2013, featuring a new study on a topic that we’re certain teachers and children are going to love: Exercise! Just like our other study topics, this new topic is meaningful and relevant to children’s everyday experiences—and will make a wonderful addition to your implementation of The Creative Curriculum for Preschool.

Finally, just a quick personal note: this year we are celebrating Teaching Strategies’ 25th anniversary. We’d never have achieved this milestone without you and are grateful for your support, feedback, and partnership over the last 25 years!

We hope you’ll continue to visit our Teaching Strategies blog (TeachingStrategies.com/blog) and are thrilled to hear that you’re finding it a helpful place to go for ideas, inspiration, and information on early childhood education. From all of us at Teaching Strategies, we wish you a fulfilling year—one that is full of strong fidelity!

Warm regards,

Diane Dodge

Curriculum Assessment

The Creative Curriculum

and Teaching Strategies GOLD

®

:

A Powerful Partnership

The same 38 research-based objectives for development and learning are at the core of both our curriculum and assessment resources. They include predictors of school success and link to school readiness—and are aligned with state early learning guidelines, the Common Core State

Standards, and the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework .

With The Creative Curriculum for Preschool and Teaching Strategies GOLD , the all-important link between curriculum and assessment has already been made. Color-coded progressions of development and learning from Teaching Strategies GOLD objectives link to color-coded teaching sequences found on Intentional Teaching Cards

and in other curriculum resources.

And, independent studies have proven that using Teaching Strategies GOLD and The Creative Curriculum for Preschool together produces growth and positive child outcomes.

Teaching Strategies GOLD is an online assessment system that offers a streamlined, simplified way to conduct authentic, ongoing assessment for children from birth through kindergarten.

Proven valid and reliable through extensive field testing, Teaching Strategies GOLD is based on

Assessment

“Things that we had looked at in the past were more like checklists. They were not developmentally appropriate, they were not working for kids, and they were so one-dimensional. In contrast, Teaching

Strategies GOLD takes ongoing assessment to another level. Everything that you need to think about children holistically is right there in one package.”

Fidelity Resources

Early childhood programs that have strong fidelity—meaning that curriculum and assessment resources are being implemented as the developers intended—are more likely to have a positive impact on child outcomes. Now anyone providing direct classroom support to teachers, including administrators, supervisors, staff developers, mentor teachers, and coaches, can easily determine and measure fidelity right in their own programs.
