Practical Approaches to Agile Development
• Human Genome was first sequenced in April 2003. Since that date the fight
against cancer has taken a different trajectory.
• Genomic + Clinical data enables new insight for clinician and researchers
• Moonshots Program - Breakthroughs in advanced kidney therapy, ovarian
cancer, CLL leukemia among others

Q&A
#INFA16
The Business Case for Customization
• Metadata Manager default connectors provide
•
•
•
access to most metadata sources, about 80%.
What about the rest?
The other 20% of metadata that doesn’t fit
“the mold” or serviced by a default connector,
still has high value!
How do we bring that into Metadata Manager?
Through custom metadata objects, of course!
#INFA16
MDA Drivers for Custom Metadata
• EPIC EHR go-live in March of this year put urgency to
•
•
•
import, relate and share a lot of custom metadata
Had both in-house custom metadata and external
custom metadata from EPIC vendor
For glossaries, determined from users that two additional
glossary types were needed- Metrics and Reports,
each with their own set of attributes
For metadata, needed two custom metadata resources,
one for Oracle’s Healthcare DW and one for FIRE
custom datamarts built to support EPIC reporting
#INFA16
Key Solution Requirements
• Metadata Manager
• Need a “generic” metadata model, capable of storing and relating a
•
•
lot of different types of custom metadata and attributes
• Should be easily relatable to other resources and glossaries
Business Glossary
• Business users required custom glossaries and attributes
• Should be easily loaded and updated regularly (scheduled)
Business Glossary Web Viewer
• BG Desktop-like features on the web, without deployment
• Need to integrate with existing .NET web port technology
• Should not require login and provide easy term search and filter
• Search highlighting and results export also nice to have

Configuration Changes For Customization
• Main change is in the IMM.properties file to
•
•
allow for override of default model
validation during loading
Under entry for “Customer Modifiable
Properties”
Add entry:
“xconnect.io.ime.validation.skip=true”
#INFA16
Metadata Load Automation: Best Practices
• Need dedicated file share on server to hold .csv target data
•
•
•
•
files created by preload mapping(s)
Use same shared folder in Metadata Mgr resource load for .csv
source file location; check folder security
For complex data or mappings, may need database schema
and helper tables to prepare data
Create project based repository folders
in PowerCenter
or
SHARED
FOLDER REUSED
Developer for mappings and employ naming standards
RAD/Agile abilities in Developer 9.5.x outweigh shortcomings
of no scheduler; partner with 3rd party scheduler or
PowerCenter to overcome this

Glossary Web Viewer – Custom Stored Proc 1
• Two main functions are rowset returning and generate
dynamic SQL, based on search input
• Get business glossaries from master repository
• FUNCTION Get_Glossary(p_repo_type IN varchar2)
• RETURN cc_glossary_cursor;
Input:
• p_repo_type – default Code value “BusinessGlossary”
Output:
• Cursor containing:
• glossary (repository) name
• glossary (repository) uid
#INFA16
Glossary Web Viewer – Custom Stored Proc 2
• Get term summary data from business glossaries
•
FUNCTION Get_Term_Summary(p_glossary in varchar2, p_compare in varchar2, p_term in varchar2)
•
RETURN cc_glossary_cursor;
Input:
•
•
p_glossary – Comma separated list of repository uids (empty string to search all repositories)
•
p_term – String to search on
p_compare – Type of search comparison to perform. List of valid values are: Equals, Begins with, Ends
with, Contains, Does not equal, Does not begin with, Does not end with, Does not contain
Returns Cursor containing:
•
•
Glossary (repository) name, Term – From search results
•
Name_Path – Used to create the URL required to view in the Informatica Business Glossary tool.
•
To create the full URL, concatenate ‘http://<server>:10250/mm/#browse___glossary___’ with Name_Path
Description – Description of the term

Successes and Benefits Achieved
• 7 glossaries and 2 custom catalogs *published*
• 4 of these had direct benefit to EPIC Go-Live
• Users like Web Viewer for quick search; can go to
•
•
•
MM/BG via link if needed (login required)
Training delivered via custom user guides or CBT
materials
Users cite time savings, productivity gains using
Web Viewer for “governed” terms and definitions
Having integrated UI for Governance Portal sets up
for “one stop” shopping for future users
#INFA16
Future Plans
• Upgrade to v10 in Q3 2016; will lessen need for custom
•
•
•
•
glossary models due to template technology
Go live of “Reports” glossary type for EPIC in May
Working on solution to expose custom metadata catalogs (like
those shown) through our Web Glossary viewer as Data
Dictionary type of asset
Working on “search all fields” functionality, driven by user
input on web portal search page
Establishing process for rapidly onboarding custom metadata
and reusing glossary definitions for BI asset creation (BO
universe and Crystal reports)
