This is how to cuddle Koala and Hayden decided to fully immerse himself in the experience when WEST OZ WILDLIFE visited our school recently. Our other special visitors were Dingo, Bobtail Goanna and Python . They certainly were interesting characters. See inside this newsletter for more photos. Dear Parents & Carers The 2016 school year started well and has continued to be successful during term 1. 15 senior students participate in the Workplace Learning program, experiencing work opportunities outside school in a variety of settings. The Bushranger Cadet leaders have organised many different activities for our High School aged students, the highlight this term was a visit on 9th March from West Oz Wildlife. They brought a selection of native animals to school; these included a python, bobtail goanna, koala and dingo. As you will see from the photographs, our students had great fun. I am happy to announce that our Library is ready to re-open at the start of next term. It has been a huge undertaking and I’d particularly like to acknowledge the hard work put in by Jess Pritchard, one of our Education Assistants, she has done a wonderful job. Renovations to our swimming pool are now complete. The murals covering the walls in particular look amazing. The pool will also re-open at the beginning of next term. Our Art Coordinator, Anne Novatscou, submitted four student artworks to Mirrabooka MLA Janine Freeman’s Harmony Day Art Award. Janine awarded equal first prize to Paige and Jason, both students in Room 4. We congratulate these talented students and Janine will attend our Assembly on Friday 29th April to present their prizes. The ailing P & C here at school has been given an injection of new blood as several staff have joined. We would still love to have more parents, family members or interested citizens on board. Could I remind all of you that you must sign in at the front desk any time that you come in to school and go beyond the office, for example to a classroom. In the event of unforseen emergencies, it is essential that we know who is in school at any time. It would be appreciated if you do not accompany your child to the classroom in the morning with the aim of speaking to the teacher as it is a difficult time in the day, with students arriving and other matters to be organised, for a teacher to engage in conversation. You are very welcome to leave a message at the front office to be passed on to the class, or arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher at a time convenient to you both. A further reminder that this Friday, 8th April is a pupil free day; (for staff Professional Learning). Term 2 commences on Tuesday, 26th April, as Monday 25th is a public holiday for Anzac Day. Gemma will be returning from leave on 26th April. We wish you all a restful holiday. Maggie May Acting Principal 4th April 2016 NO SCHOOL – FRIDAY 8th APRIL START BACK – Term 2 TUESDAY 26th April Third Annual An opportunity for parents, caregivers and the community to see the everyday workings of Gladys Newton School Please put this date in your calendar This year the OPEN DAY will be on the last day of term 2 to give parents/carers an opportunity to pick up reports and chat to their child’s teacher.
