PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
8th Annual UVA Cardiovascular Symposium
Debates and Controversies
in Cardiovascular Diseases
We are proud to be celebrating the eighth annual Controversies in the Treatment of Cardiovascular
Disease symposium, February 2016 ! The three-day scientific program will offer realistic views on
many controversial issues in cardiovascular disease, heart failure, critical care, vascular, congenital
surgery, and ECMO. Sessions will include a combination of debates, keynote lectures, and research.
A faculty of known leaders in the field has been invited to share their knowledge and experiences
with complex and controversial cases.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Through participation in this conference, the participants will have an opportunity to:
n To apply the most up to date and effective treatment options for patients with various
cardiovascular diseases
n To determine appropriate mechanical circulatory support for heart failure patients.
n To assess complex pathophysiology of single ventricle patients and select the appropriate
palliative therapy.
n To apply the most up-to-date ACC guidelines for treatment of valvular diseases.
n To determine the benefits and limitations of trans catheter valve repair and replacement
including ideal patients.
n To apply the current state of surgical outcomes for conventional and minimally invasive valve
surgery and coronary artery bypass grafting.
n To analyze new medical and hybrid treatments for atrial fibrillation and ventricular
tachycardia.
n To understand treatment options for complex aortic desease
n To create a management plan to provide coordinated care and a consistent message
between providers throughout the entire care of the cardiac patient.
n To define ethical issues surrounding patients with cardiovascular disease.
n Identify appropriate patient selection and care of ECMO patients.
