USD 200 - 300 Excavated from a necropolis near Ordona, Italy by Byron Farwell in 1944-1945. Published in figure 14 of Franklin Johnson's "The Farwell Collection." Ancient Greek, South Italic, Ca. 5th - 4th Century BC. Solid terracotta, both with ancient holes for suspension. Loom weights may not be as flashy as a highly decorated amphora or askos, but they were an important tool for textile workers. They also served as a cult object for the deceased. Loom weights would be buried with the recently departed as a symbol of the weaving the sacred garments that the deceased were interred in. These specific loom weights served that purpose as they were found in a grave. Think too of Penelope, left alone in Ithaca, longing for the return of Odysseus, her husband and king of Ithaca, while suitors try to break down her door and take her hand in marriage. What did she do for the 20 years while Odysseus was gone? She wove and un-wove and wove again a blanket on a loom. The loom used weights like these. They aren't as flashy as an askos or amphora, but they were a part of Homer's epic story. This example measures approximately 5" tall by about 4 1/2" wide, and sits atop three nubbin style tripod feet. This type of Maya vessel is well-documented in Nicholas Hellmuth's book "The Escuintla Hoards", in which he cites such examples as evidence of early Teotihucan influence in the Maya regions of Guatemala. Hellmuth interprets the incised designs to represent cartouched reptilian eye glyphs on opposing sides, separated by iconography he believes to represent the coiled central antenna of a butterfly or moth- all imagery he believes to have been imported from Teotihucan influence in the region. Remnants of red Cinnabar remain in some areas of the incised designs. It depicts what appears to be a mythical zoomorphic creature, showing attributes of perhaps a variety of animals, featuring a reptilian looking head, a feathered tail, and four limbs flexed as if lying in a splayed position. Interestingly, there is an embossed circular region on the belly of the creature with a worn depiction that may represent what is often interpreted as a reptilian eye motif. This example measures approximately 1 1/4" tall by about 1 1/8" wide, and is made from a pale green stone. It is perforated for suspension and features deeply carved stylized facial features done in an ancient abrasion technique. Interestingly, the center of each eye is shown with alternating half circle/crescent shapes- one up and one down. This may have symbolically represented both life and death, as suggested by other Pre-Columbian iconographic depictions. Under magnification, an ancient patina of mineral deposits covers the entire surface (including all carved features- assuring authenticity) which obscures the vibrant and color of the well-preserved stone surface beneath. Could likely be carefully cleaned by a restorer to reveal the original surface and beauty of the stone beneath, if desired. Does not include black bust display, for photo purposes only. It is perforated at each end, where it would have been strung as an impressive pectoral pendant. Such objects are rare to survive due to their fragile nature, and this large example would have been indicative of significant status and prestige for the ancient owner. Lovely carved and painted wood Santos in the form of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe (Spanish: Virgen de Guadalupe) is a celebrated Roman Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary. Two accounts, published in the 1640s, one in Spanish, one in Nahuatl, tell how, while walking from his village to Mexico City in the early morning of December 9, 1531 (then the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in the Spanish Empire),[1] the peasant Juan Diego saw on the slopes of the Hill of Tepeyac a vision of a girl of fifteen or sixteen years of age, surrounded by light. Speaking to him in Nahuatl, the local language, she asked that a church be built at that site, in her honor; from her words, Juan Diego recognized the Lady as the Virgin Mary. Diego told his story to the Spanish Archbishop, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, who instructed him to return to Tepeyac Hill, and ask the lady for a miraculous sign to prove her identity. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill. Although December was very late in the growing season for flowers to bloom, Juan Diego found at the usually barren hilltop Castilian roses, not native to Mexico, which the Virgin arranged in his peasant tilma cloak. When Juan Diego opened the cloak before Bishop Zumárraga on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and in their place was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, miraculously imprinted on the fabric. 11-5/8"H x 7-3/8"W.
