What is Community The Troy Foundation Annual Report 2010 We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone … and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something. … Sandra Day O’Connor Community is… Dear Friends of the Foundation: What is community? It is more than a place you live. It is a feeling, a sense of belonging somewhere that nurtures you as a person and gives you a sense of caring about the place, the people and the quality of life. It’s what makes a "place" feel like a hometown. The Foundation’s founder, Augustus Stouder, understood this feeling as he set out to give back to and improve upon his beloved Troy. His initial donation of $151,641 to establish The Troy Foundation inspired others to follow his lead. Because of these solid beginnings, along with generous donors throughout the years, The Troy Foundation has been able to continue its commitment to improving the quality of living in and around Troy. The year 2010 was no different as many grants were awarded to fill a wide variety of requests. As an example, we presented a $5,500 grant to the popular Festival of Nations which celebrates the culture, food and entertainment of a different country each year. In another grant we gave Habitat for Humanity $10,000 for their Neighborhood Stabilization Program, helping those less fortunate help themselves. An organization that makes Troy such a beautiful place to live is Troy Community Works! The Troy Foundation awarded them $3,000 in support of their Make A Difference Day. The grant financially assisted a team of almost 300 volunteers who completed building projects, did landscaping and performed maintenance work for area non-profit organizations. We sincerely thank all our donors and staunch supporters who continue to help each and every year to make the grants possible. Because of you, we can work together for the common good...and that is what community is all about. Schlemmer Secretary History of The Troy Foundation We cannot live for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow man. …Herman Melville Augustus G. Stouder, founder of The Troy Foundation, likely did not appreciate or understand the concept of “community” while he was growing up. He was born in August of 1850 in the farmlands of Indiana, and moved to Iowa when he was six years old. He was one of six siblings who were orphaned when their mother died after their relocation. They were raised by a variety of relatives and had little formal education. In spite of his humble beginnings, Stouder developed a solid work ethic along the path to maturity, enhanced by natural intelligence, integrity and strength of character. Fortunately for Troy, he headed this way to use his gifts to pursue his dreams of success. He began with a meager $300 and bought the Troy Carriage Sun Shade Company. After turning it into a successful business, he sold his interest in 1904 and bought shares in Hobart Manufacturing Company. He became an integral part of Hobart and served as its president until his death in 1929. As an astute businessman, Stouder was aware that it was as important to give his attention to the community in which he thrived as it was to devote time to his company. He became deeply interested in nurturing the entire spectrum of the community, from its schools and cultural groups to its charitable organizations. Since Stouder was a bachelor who saved the greater part of his fortune, he was able to follow through in his desire to enrich the community by establishing The Troy Foundation with a $151,641 bequest. Since then the organization has grown to encompass nearly 200 funds with assets of over $56 million. Augustus Stouder may not have developed a sense of community during his early years; however, he knew it when he encountered it in Troy, Ohio, USA. He said, “It was a fortunate day when I came to Troy. The place is dear to my heart.” Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3 Donors of The Troy Foundation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4 Partners in Giving . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .12 Balance Sheet and Income Statement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13 Distributions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .14 Fund to Fund Transfers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .20 Pictorial Review . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 How to Become a Part of The Troy Foundation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 Table of Contents Funds in The Troy Foundation The Troy Foundation has 200 funds providing income to grants, which are determined by the Distribution Committee in response to the Request for Grant Applications which are reviewed quarterly for educational, recreational, health-related, and other community causes. Most of the funds in the Troy Foundation operate as perpetual endowments, distributing only their net income, others distribute principal, either at a specific time set forth at the fund’s creation or at the suggestion of the fund advisors. There are six categories of funds in The Troy Foundation: Unrestricted funds, Donor Advised funds, Field of Interest funds, Designated funds, Scholarship funds, Organizational Endowment funds. The Unrestricted funds enable the Foundation to be flexible and responsive in the grantmaking process while the other funds are in place to meet specific needs. These funds have been created by individuals, corporations and non-profit organizations to carry forth the philosophy of The Troy Foundation. The Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund is the main source of support for the grant request dollars. Applicants for funding are also served through other special funds: those designed for a specific charity, or those set up to support a particular area of interest. Others supply funding especially for scholarships or for organizational endowments. Whatever your intent for giving, there is a fund waiting for your consideration. The Troy Foundation 22 How to Become a Part of The Troy Foundation Now more than ever it is important for us to reach out to the fellow members of our community. The needs are as strong as they are varied. One way to make a difference in the lives of so many people is through donations to The Troy Foundation. What difference can one person make? The Troy Foundation would like you to know that one person can definitely make a difference. You can make a lasting gift to the community, large or small, through your donations. Remember, philanthropy is not just for the wealthy. Contributions of all sizes added together can and do make good things happen. You can become a donor to an organization that exists for the sole purpose of making things better for the people and places in your community through The Troy Foundation. Here’s how: Ways to contribute The Troy Foundation offers its donors a flexible, easy way to aid a broad range of worthy organizations while enjoying the most favorable tax treatment the law allows. There are a number of ways you can make a lasting gift to the community and whatever your personal interests, causes or reasons for giving, your wishes can be carried out. In addition to the specific fund categories, there are others ways to endow The Troy Foundation. For example, if you already have established a private foundation, it can be transferred to The Troy Foundation to eliminate your needs to manage such an entity. This is especially helpful when family members become scattered but wish to maintain local giving. The Troy Foundation will guarantee that the identity and purpose of the original private foundation are preserved and that family members continue as fund advisors. Another way to contribute is through capital-gain property such as real estate and securities. These can be given to the Foundation for a tax deduction at full fair market value and free of capital gains and estate taxes. If the contribution exceeds your gift limitation, you may avail yourself of a carry-forward for future tax years. Partners in Giving Partners in Giving is a partnership program created to give residents a special opportunity to contribute to The Troy Foundation while learning more about the organization through volunteer activities, newsletters, and the annual report. Annual membership is $100. One hundred percent of the contributions made to the Partners in Giving membership is added to the Foundation’s General Fund to assist in our grantmaking. Finally, you may wish to include The Troy Foundation in your will. Bequests will not be subject to estate or inheritance taxes. Although you may designate almost any charitable purpose, you may wish to consult the Foundation about the proper language of your bequest. There are many ways to include The Troy Foundation while still providing for your beneficiaries. Consult with your financial, tax or legal advisor when you are contemplating a gift to The Troy Foundation. SPECIAL NOTE: In order to provide our contributors with the most favorable tax status the law allows, The Troy Foundation must seek and receive support from a wide range of donors. Each year, public contributions must account for at least ten percent of total support (investment income and donations) of the Foundation measured over the four previous years. As funds grow and our annual income increases, the level of community participation becomes increasingly important. As always, we thank you for helping The Troy Foundation continue to thrive and the citizens in our community continue to benefit. The Legacy Society 23 The Troy Foundation In 1999, The Troy Foundation established The Legacy Society to create an opportunity for and to recognize those people who are making plans today that will provide benefits to the community well into the future. The Legacy Society is the Foundation’s way of assisting, recognizing and thanking these benefactors for their foresight, generosity and their philanthropic leadership. Leaving a legacy can take the form of bequesting a certain dollar amount or percentage of your estate to The Troy Foundation in your will. Another way is to name the Foundation as the beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy. Also, leaving a legacy is not just for those who would like to plan for donations after their death. Anyone can set up a fund that, as soon as the interest has accrued, endows a cause you hold dear to your heart. In this way you can witness what your contributions are doing and enjoy the results firsthand. The “how to” questions about leaving a legacy can be answered by calling The Troy Foundation at 937-339-8935 or by consultation with your attorney, accountant, insurance professional, financial planner or the trust department at your bank. care and concern For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s care and concern for each other. …Millard Fuller The Troy Foundation 216 W.
