SITE SAFETY - LOCKOUT PADLOCKS
LOCKOUT & TAGOUT
What is lockout?
Lockout is an important safety
procedure which involves shutting
off the power to industrial machines
or equipment during maintenance
or repair. This procedure protects
employees from risks caused by
power sources. Used properly, in
conjunction with a well-planned
lockout process, the safety padlock
helps ensure that employees will not
inadvertently activate a piece of
equipment while someone else is
working on it.

SAFE PRACTICE:
1 EMPLOYEE - 1 PADLOCK - 1 KEY.
All employees should carry a unique
key so that their own padlock cannot
be opened by any other key.
Lockout is the preferred isolation
method for equipment maintenance
as it physically stops accidental
equipment ignition.
What is
tagout?
Tagout is the
placement of
a tag on the
machine or
device which is
being worked on,
advising all staff and contractors that
the machine is under maintenance.
A tag on its own is not an effective
isolation device. A tag should only
be attached to the machinery
once the operator or maintenance
worker has locked out the
energy source.

FIRE PROTECTION
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
There are five common types of fire
extinguishers; water, foam, ABE dry
powder, CO2 and wet chemical,
each of which will put out specific
classes of fire.
Fire extinguishers display labels with
pictures to show the type of fire it
can be applied to. Class A, B, E and F
extinguishers also have a numerical rating
tested, based on AS/NZS 1850 standards.
APPLICATION - Energised
electrical equipment
such as industrial
switchgear and high voltage machinery.
APPLICATION Deep fryer fats and oils.
These oils are often
difficult to contain due to the potential
of fire spread on discharge.
RATING - Often also rated for other
classified risks i.e. A, B & E for Dry
Powder Extinguishers and B & E for CO2
Extinguishers which are best suited to
cover electrical risks.
NO
RATING - Gives specific reference to the
size of the deep fryer the extinguisher can
be used on i.e. 3F and 4F ratings are the
common industry standard requirements.
Fire blankets can also be used on smaller
oil fires encountered in domestic home
environments and commercial kitchens.

POWDER B(E)

APPLICATION - Fires
involving flammable
liquids such as kerosene,
grease, petrol, oil, etc.

expect to extinguish.

FIRE BLANKET
Class C
APPLICATION - Fires
arising from gas pressure
vessels such as LPG
cylinders and gas stoves.
RATING - Usually doesn’t have a rating,
but the presence of the letter ‘C’
indicates that it is suitable for use on
Class C gas risks.
Class D
Commonly found in chemical
laboratories, automotive and aircraft
industry workshop environments.
APPLICATION - Flammable metal fires,
eg. magnesium, titanium, potassium
and sodium and they are often specific
for a given type of metal.
RATING - No rating or designated picture.
They are designed for Class D fires only.

FIRE PROTECTION
EXTINGUISHER LOCATION
Extinguishers need to be easily
accessible. They must not be located in
areas where the user could be blocked
in by the flames they are fighting.
If a site hazard has been identified, an
extinguisher should be located nearby.
INSPECTION & TESTING
• In accordance with NZS4503:2005
extinguishers are to be tested
and inspected by a competent
technician at least once every
12 months.
SERVICE TAGS
These are to be attached to every
fire extinguisher in use. These detail
last date of inspection, pressure test,
maintenance and survey performed.
Extinguishers should be mounted on
wall brackets and should be between
100mm and 1200mm above the ground.
EXTINGUISHER SIGNAGE
NZ SAFETY CATALOGUE HAS A
RANGE OF SIGNS WHICH MEET FIRE
REGULATIONS, SEE PAGES 212-213.
VEHICLE EXTINGUISHER
REQUIREMENTS
All motor vehicles are
recommended to
carry fire extinguishers.
The standard model
required for an average
size car would be a 1kg ABE
dry powder extinguisher
and for larger vehicles
a 1.5kg or 2.3kg ABE dry
powder extinguisher.
• Every 5 years extinguishers are
required to be discharged, pressure
tested, inspected and recharged.
WORKPLACE SAFETY
Signage is required so
that fire extinguishers
can be located
easily in an event of
an emergency. The
standards state that
they must be brightly
coloured red and
white for visibility
and show the
extinguisher type
and application.
They should be mounted 180mm to
1500mm above the ground and be
visible from up to 15m away in all
normal directions of approach.
BEFORE FIGHTING A FIRE:
• E xtinguishers should be regularly
inspected to ensure they are in good
working order. A few things to check
for include leaks, tampering and
corrosion.
• If an extinguisher has been partially
discharged it should never be
placed back in service until it has
been fully recharged and inspected.
For smaller models it will likely be
more cost effective to replace
the unit.
• If extinguishers are located in an
aggressive or corrosive environment
they will require more regular
inspections, maintenance every
6 months and pressure testing every
3 years.
• N Z Safety can arrange to have
regular inspections and servicing of
your extinguishers and hose reels.
• Ensure that the fire department has
been notified
• T he fire is small and not spreading
(a fire can double in size every
2-3 minutes)
REFER TO THE
EXTINGUISHER SELECTION
CHART ON PAGE 176 TO
IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF
EXTINGUISHER REQUIRED
FOR THE DIFFERENT HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS ON BOARD.
Extinguishers should always be securely
mounted in an appropriate vehicle

Highly pressurised compressed liquid
stored in the extinguisher. The gas
disperses quickly, effective from one
to two metres, expands and cools the
surrounding air, often causing dry ice
to shoot out which may form around
the nozzle. To avoid the fire re-igniting,
continue to apply the C02 extinguisher
even after the fire appears to be out.
WET CHEMICAL
The wet chemical agent discharges at
a controlled rate removing the risk of a
violent reaction that could potentially
spread the fire. Forms a blanket of
agent that smothers the fuel source
from oxygen and starves the fire.

Fire Extinguishers should
be inspected at least
once every 12 months.
Lack of maintenance can lead to an extinguisher not
discharging when required, or rupturing when pressurised.
Foam
These extinguishers combine
compressed air with Aqueous Film
Forming Foam (AFFF) to create a
sealing foam blanket over B class
risks such as fuels, spirits and oils. A
foam blanket has a high burn back
resistance which effectively seals off
vapour from the ignition source and
often achieves total containment.

Air Pressurised Water (APW)
extinguishers contain water and
compressed gas (pressurised air or

spread and get bigger. These are
suitable only for Class A (ordinary

SITE SAFETY - LONE WORKER
WORKPLACE SAFETY
Lone workers don’t have to be alone with
man-down/lone worker tracking.
If you have workers who operate machinery and
equipment on their own, we can provide a wirelesstechnology system that enables an alarm to be raised if
they require assistance.
The EkoTek system, for example, will provide two-way
messaging to convey a wide range of critical information,
such as: man-down alarm, worker location tracking, on-site
security and production line alerts.
So no matter what the duress and lone worker requirements are, and no
matter what environment the solution is needed for, Tellen Integrated
Solutions can assist – and provide installation, training and support.
