WHAT IS ESD?
ESD stands for Electrostatic Discharge. A large difference in potential
creates a spark or disruptive discharge, which causes high
electric voltage pulses in electronic equipment.
All of us have experienced ESD. The most common way for
us to perceive it is as an electric shock. Many electrostatic
discharges are, however, imperceptible to humans, but can
nevertheless be damaging to electronic devices.
For a human to perceive static discharge, it needs to have
reached around 3000 volts. In comparison, just 30 volts is
enough to destroy a semiconductor device.

ESD = Electrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic discharge between charged objects through
direct or close contact.
ESDS = Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive Devices
Devices that could be damaged by electrostatic discharge
during processing or transport.
EPA = Electrostatic Protected Area
A work area fitted with ESD protective measures where
electrostatic sensitive devices can be handled without
being damaged.

WHERE DOES ESD
COME FROM?
WHEN IS ESD
DANGEROUS?
Electrostatic charging occurs when charges are separated.
This happens when two different materials rub against each
other or are separated.
Danger to humans is unusual. Electrostatic discharge
can, however, pose dangers in production plants in the
electronics industry.
Examples of how separate charges are created:
Uncontrolled electrostatic discharge can lead to total
failures as well as hidden defects in electronic assemblies
(semiconductor devices), which can result in high costs with
regard to:
̑̑Walking across plastic flooring
̑̑Friction against synthetic clothing
̑̑Moving of plastic containers
̑̑Unrolling adhesive PVC tapes
̑̑Movement of conveyor belts
The charge is exchanged with objects with a lower charge.
It can even create a visible spark. This can be observed
when a grounded object is touched, such as a radiator.
Low humidity encourages the formation of electrostatic
charge. Humidity should therefore be between 40 %
and 60 %.
Objects with the same charge repel each other.
If a person is electrostatically charged, their
hair will literally "stand on end".

Electronic devices should only
be handled with personal ESD
protective equipment.
FOUR GOLDEN RULES
1. Always assume that all active devices are
ESD sensitive.
2. Only handle electronic devices in electrostatic
protected areas (EPA) and only if they are
properly grounded.
3. Store and transport ESD sensitive devices in
ESD protected containers.
4. Regularly check the ESD protective system.

"Where there is no charge, there can be no discharge."
Making as few movements as possible and using ESD
safe equipment keeps the risk of static charge caused
by personnel to a minimum.

PROTECTION AGAINST ESD: EPA!
EPA = Electrostatic Protected Area
A comprehensive EPA zone covers the following areas (minimum requirement according to DIN EN 61340-5-1):
Workplace / workstation
An ESD protected workplace should
be ergonomically adaptable.
Electrostatic charge is dissipated via
the working area and a grounding
cable, so the work place remains
charge-neutral.
Personnel grounding
People are the main source of
electrostatic charge. Shoes and
wristbands with grounding cables are
mandatory for employees working in
electronic production. Wristband and
shoe testers make the daily checking
of EPA effectiveness easier. Chairs
and standing stools should also have
ESD protection.
Tools
To ensure safe handling of your
devices, you should use ESD
compliant tools.
Markings
Floor markings identify ESD
protected areas. Signs and labels
are equally important in signalling
potentially at-risk devices and
assemblies.

Measuring tools
It is essential to test protection devices
regularly with measuring equipment.
Measurements must always be taken
when entering an EPA and regular
personnel checks must be performed.
Work tables, floor mats and grounding
connections should be checked
monthly and ESD monitoring instruments should be checked annually.
The discharge resistance should have
the following values:
Work surface: between
7.5 x 105 Ω and 109 Ω
Floors: less than 109 Ω
Chair/standing stool: less than 1010 Ω
Tools: less than 1012 Ω
Storage / containers
Dissipative ESD shelves and
containers for transporting and
storing devices protect at-risk
devices. Roller cabinets should
have conductive wheels.
Floor
The floor should be conductive
and meet the required limits of
DIN EN 61340-5-1. When cleaning
ESD floors, only use cleaning
products that do not create layers
so that the conductivity values stay
within the desired range. If only
individual workstations are set up
as EPA, ESD floor mats or tiles can be
fitted with grounding, but they must
be clearly marked.

ESD safety mats, floor mats
ESD floor panels
The special design of the floor panels allows a quick installation of large areas of dissipative industrial floors – without interruption to
operations, on almost any surface.
The floor panels can be used on all hard subfloors (they just need to be relatively flat, but can be worn and even wet) and on carpets with
minimal or no preparation.
The ESD puzzle pieces are loosely laid on the floor and firmly interlocked using a rubber hammer.
Sub-standard, worn-out and possibly damp subfloors can
be quickly improved without the complication of having to
repair the surface first.
Possible to fit the whole area in one colour or in a
chequered pattern. Black and yellow ramp edging
marks out the EPA area.

Instructions for laying and grounding ESD floor panels
To ground the flooring, a self-adhesive copper strip (every 5 m) is loosely laid under the ESD floor panels and connected to ground via
resistance of 1 MΩ.
A bore must be drilled into a floor panel where a press stud (included in the grounding kit) can be attached.
The copper strip from the grounding kit is attached to this press stud, which is connected to ground or grounded with the self-adhesive
copper strip. Grounding is via the press stud and a grounding component.
If the ramp edging is to be cut at mitred corners, you will need to allow for the waste when ordering.
The customer must have the grounding connection carried out professionally by a qualified electrician. It is not completed by the
Hoffmann Group as part of an installation order.

Grounding wristbands
Version: Entirely metal-free except for contact connection (no metal contact with the
skin). Woven conductive fibre in the wristband and electrically conductive plastic
on the inside of the clasp.

Antistatic:
"Charge-reducing quality", can be, for example, a special type of plastic.
Dissipative: Surface resistance of materials which are between 105 and 1012 ohms.
EPA:
(Stands for Electrostatic Protected Area) Work area where electrostatic sensitive
devices can be handled without being damaged.
Grounding:
Dissipation of electrical currents into the ground.
Grounding point: Central point (e.g. on a worktop) which is connected to the building‘s grounding.
ESD:
(Stands for Electrostatic Discharge) The phenomenon of electrostatic discharge.
ESDS:
(Stands for Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive Devices) Electrostatic sensitive
devices such as ICs.
IC:
(Stands for Integrated Circuit) Integrated circuit, microchip, e.g. microprocessor.
Ionising:
Removing charged particles (e.g. electrons) from a substance such as air. Ionisers
can neutralise electrostatic charges by distributing ionised air.
Insulator:
Materials which have a high surface resistance of at least 1012 ohms.
Static charges remain for a long time in one area of this material without
flowing away (plastics, glass, air).
(El.) conductivity: Property of a material to conduct electrical current, e.g. metals.
