the first year equivalent of SFU’s
Bachelor Degree Programs.

SFU to ensure the highest teaching
standards at all times. 100% of FIC UTP

are long, warm and sunny with an average

fall are also comfortable, with moderate
temperatures. An average temperature of

Life on campus
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby campus in the thriving and
culturally diverse city of Burnaby, a 30-minute drive from
downtown Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is one of the most
awe-inspiring university settings on the continent, offering a
stunning panorama of mountains, cities, ocean and islands from
its location at the summit of 400-metre high Burnaby Mountain.
Designed by internationally acclaimed
architect Arthur Erickson, the campus
has everything one would expect of a
major university, yet on a scale that will
make you feel at home. The vast majority
of students pursue their studies on the
pedestrian-friendly campus, which houses
administrative and academic offices, the
main library, student services, on-campus
residences, and the new UniverCity
community of residences and shops.
For students wanting to live on campus,
SFU provides fully-catered single room
accommodation as well as an on-campus
hotel where visiting family members can
stay. Buses operate between the campus
and Greater Vancouver’s rapid transit
system at the foot of Burnaby Mountain on
a regular basis. Studying at FIC will give you
access to all of these facilities and more.
There are plenty of opportunities for
students to get immersed in their campus
life. The Simon Fraser Student Society
funds nearly 100 clubs catering to
endless interests. Numerous events such
as Terry Fox Day, Clubs Week and Gung
Haggis Fat Choy foster multicultural ties
and connect people from all walks of life.
SFU Clubs Week
This provides both FIC and SFU students
the opportunity to meet with members
of a wide array of clubs that exist at
the University. SFU Clubs Week runs
the second week of every term and
during this time, students can choose to
become members of the more than 100
SFU clubs. These include professional
as well as fun clubs, such as the
Association of Latin American Students,
Burnaby Mountain Toastmasters,
Chinese Culture Club, Engineers
Without Borders, Food Club, Games
Developers Club, International Business
Association and many, many more!
Sports Clubs
Joining a sports club is an excellent way to
meet new people, learn new skills, and enjoy
a sport or activity that interests you! They
are also a great way for student organizers to
gain valuable leadership, management and
organizational skills. There are many sports
clubs including Badminton, Cheerleading,
Cricket, Dodgeball, Field Hockey, Golf,
Ice Hockey, Kendo, Kung Fu, Lacrosse,
Rowing, Rugby, Ski/Snowboarding, Table
Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Ultimate Frisbee,
Volleyball and Waterpolo to name a few.

This program is equivalent to Year 1 of select degree
programs at SFU.
In order to progress to a degree program at SFU,
students are required to complete 10 courses equal
to a minimum of 30 credit hours and achieve the
specified GPA.
These courses will normally be completed within
3 terms (one year).

FIC offers a pre-university level program (UTP Stage I) which
prepares you for entry into university-level studies in Business
Administration, Computing Science, Engineering Science or
Arts and Social Sciences in UTP Stage II.
UTP Stage II programs are offered in
association with SFU as an alternative
pathway to a degree at SFU. Courses are
the equivalent of the first year of the SFU
degree and are quality assured by SFU.
Upon successful completion of UTP
Stage II and having met the SFU specified
Grade Point Average (GPA), you will be
eligible to apply for transfer to select SFU
Bachelor degree programs with advanced
standing status of up to 60 credit hours.

The language of instruction at FIC is English. Before being granted admission into an FIC program,
you must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency. This can be done by obtaining one of the
results shown in the table below.

Your English language preparation
If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for
entry to your program at FIC, you may want to enrol in an intensive
English language course at SFU. The Preparation in Academic
Skills (PAS) and English Language & Culture (ELC) programs will
assist you in improving your English language proficiency prior to
starting at FIC.
