A Big Thank You to Emerson PTO!!
Emerson Staff and Students would like to thank all of you for the help and
support you give to Emerson Elementary in so many ways during the year. We
really appreciate your hard work and kindness which helps make our school a
wonderful place to attend school and work. Thanks!
PTO Spotlight
The Emerson Spring Carnival last week was a blast. A huge thank you to the teachers and parents who
helped make this event possible – we could not have done it without you. We hope to know how
much money was raised by the May PTO meeting next week.
Profits from the Emerson Scrapfest went towards purchasing wonderful new playground equipment
that should arrive in the next few weeks. Your child/children will soon have access to another ball cart,
dozens of new balls, jump ropes and hula hoops, Frisbees, wrist ribbons and so much more. Thank you
to all of the scrapbookers who helped make these purchases possible.
Teacher Appreciation Week has been a great success this week. Thank you for helping us honor all of
the wonderful teachers we have at Emerson!
The Landscaping around the exterior of Emerson and the interior courtyard is an on-going battle. If
you have a green thumb or simply like pulling up weeds and will be available to help over the summer,
please contact Jenny Young (jennyyoung2@msn.com).
Final PTO Meeting of 2010/11: May 10th at 7pm at Sports Page. Come join us!

Elementary Newsletter – Mark Timmerman, K-5 Principal
The End is Near!!!
I don’t know about any of you reading this newsletter, but I can’t believe we are already planning for our last days of the
school year. I am sure we say this every year, but once April arrives, the school year is over before we know it.
We have had a very good school year this year and we have several things to celebrate regarding this school year and several
more to look forward to for the 2011-12 school year.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Character Counts! - One big celebration this year has been student behavior. Our student behavior has not been
bad in the past, but we have seen a significant decrease in the number of students referred to the office this year. I
believe last year we had approximately 70 office referrals and as of May 2nd, we have only about 45, so our numbers
will be down for the overall school year. Great job to the students and also the teachers who helped out with
supervision!
Student Learning – We have had many great stories at each grade level with improved student learning including
reading scores which we look at three times a year as a staff. We have also begun to take a very close look at our
math scores and have seen some great improvement in our math facts. Take a look at the 4th grade math graphs
outside their rooms for one piece of evidence. Great work!
New Parking Lot – As we look forward to 2011-12, our parking lot will be completely resurfaced with construction
beginning on May 25th. If you have driven across our front parking lot, you’ll agree that it needs it! If you need to
visit the Emerson office in May or June, please use the west entrance, or park along 9 th street and enter at our main
entrance.
New Curriculum Materials – We are very eager to begin planning for new reading materials that will be used in
grades 3-5 for 2011-12. We believe students will find the new materials engaging and teachers are looking forward
to planning new lessons around the updated stories for next year. In addition, our 2nd grade will be implementing
new writing curriculum which will be great for those students as well.
As your principal, I wish all of our Emerson families a safe and restful summer vacation. If you have any questions or needs
this summer, please stop by the office or leave me a message via phone or email. Our office phone number is 515-961-9550.
My extension is 5100.
The first day of school for the 2011-12 school year is Monday, August 22.
Have a great break!
Mr. Timmerman
Attention 4th grade students (and parents):
