Kuranui Korero 19 September 2014 Week 10, Term 3 – Week 1, Term 4 "Be the best you can be" “Whaia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, me maunga teitei!” NCEA Reports Parents of senior students, you will receive our newly designed NCEA credit report by email in time for the Family Learning Conferences on Wednesday. If you do not have email at home your child’s report will be mailed home. From the time that you and your child receive the NCEA report there will be just three weeks of school time and two weeks of holidays left before NCEA external assessments begin on 10 November. As you discuss the report with your child ask them the following questions. Are they on track to achieve their NCEA goal this year? Do they have enough internally assessed credits to achieve their goals or will they need to sit some or all of the external assessments in their subjects? Are they on track to achieve a Merit or Excellence endorsement? Will they need to sit externals to achieve the endorsement? Should they focus on fewer external assessments in order that they get the best results possible? If they are short of the required number of credits to achieve their goal do they have assessments they could resubmit or do they have unfinished assessments which could be completed and handed in? If you are still unsure of how your child can achieve their goal raise the issue with your child’s mentor at the FLCs next week. We are currently compiling a list of students who are at risk of not achieving their goals. These students will not be granted study leave. They will be required to remain at college and to keep working toward their goals. We will let you know shortly if your child is or is not going to be released for study leave. NCEA requirements Level 1 80 credits are required at any level (Level 1, 2 or 3) including literacy and numeracy. Level 2 60 credits at Level 2 or above + 20 credits from any level The Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must also be met. Level 3 60 credits at Level 3 or above + 20 credits from Level 2 or above For more detailed information go to http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualificationsstandards/qualifications/ncea/understanding-ncea/ . Family Learning Conferences FLCs for the parents of senior students are scheduled for Wednesday 24 September and will run from 3.30 to 8pm. You will have by now been sent an FLC appointment time. If this time does not suit you will need to contact your child’s mentor to reschedule the FLC. Education Review Office A team of ERO reviewers have been in the college all of this week to look us over. The team have been visiting classrooms, talking to staff and reviewing our paperwork to ensure that providing quality education for your children is our top priority. The full written report will be published in term four. The Prom The 2014 Prom with a theme of “Neverland” was hosted at the Carterton Events Centre on th the 6 of September. Through the commitment of community volunteers we aim to provide opportunities for youth to take part in workshops which will include Music, Arts, Sports, Crafts, Board Games, Cooking and any other activities that may be of interest. We are kicking everything off with an open day and free sausage sizzle on Sunday the 28th from 2-4pm . The objective of this event is to bring our wider community together for a day of good old fashion fun. For example :Ropes, Elastics, Bat down, Te Rakau, Ki o rahi, Badminton and more depending on community participation. We aim for our youth to bring with them ideas and suggestions of what they would like to see offered in our program. We will also give the community a chance to offer their suggestions on how they could help as well as any ideas they may have. We believe this is an exciting initiative and with the help and support of our whole community we would not only support our youth to make positive choices but create a safe place for the people of Featherston. Both Carterton and Martinbourgh communities have already successfully set up youth groups under the Umbrella of Rangatahi to Rangatira (R2R), which we hope to join. If you can support our program in any way or if you have any questions we would love to hear from you, please contact me on redtawharu@hotmail.com or 02102434877. We are asking for any youth to please come forward either as leaders that could help throughout the program or for their own suggestions on how they would benefit and what they would like to see from the programme.” Reanne Tawharu Hypnotist Fundraiser th Book the 17 of October in your diary for “Gerard the Hypnotist”. NCEA Guide App NZQA launched a new App in May called the NCEA Guide. The App provides quick and easy access to key information about NCEA and makes practical information about NCEA more easily accessible. Parents and whanau are able to access simple content about how NCEA works and how they can support family members studying in NCEA (no individual student result or progress information is available). The App also supports employers seeking to understand and evaluate NCEA graduates and their qualification. Content can be viewed in English and Te Reo Maori. The NCEA Guide App is free to download from the Apple App store and Google Play Store. From the Sports Desk… Winter Sport Roundup: nd The Boys 2 XI Football team had a 2-1 win over Makoura College and finished nd 2 in their competition. rd The Girls Football Team finished 3 in the Wairarapa Secondary Schools Division 1 Competition. st Congratulations to the Boys 1 XI Football team winning the Wairarapa Secondary Schools Division 1 Competition with a 4-2 win against Rathkeale 2nd Xl. After a hugely successful season the boys went into the final with all the reasons to be confident. They sat at the top of the league table, they had better attack and defensive statistics than any other team by far and they had beaten Rathkeale three times during the year. However it all counted for nothing on grand final day. Early in the second half the boys led 2- nil with Jordan Blathwayt and Max Maybury scoring but Rathkeale replied with 2 quick goals. With ten minutes left it looked like we might be headed for extra time. But as they say, “it’s not over until it’s over”. Max made a great strike from the right wing for his second goal and with a couple of minutes remaining Jordan also got his second with a display of deft skills in the penalty area. It was a deserved result after having been the best team all season.
