THE Benjamin G. Lamme
MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL
Benjamin G. Lamme, ME 1888, achieved international
acclaim as a pioneering inventor and engineer for the
Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. in Pittsburgh.
For 21 years he served as chief engineer for Westinghouse.
Among his 162 patents were new inventions on railway
motors, induction motors, converters and the developments
pertaining to the first Niagara Falls power system. In his will,
Lamme provided that a gold medal be presented annually
to a technical graduate of his alma mater for “meritorious
achievement in advancing engineering.”
Meritorious Service CITATION
This special citation was established by the faculty of the
College of Engineering in 1975 to recognize people whose
sustained and extraordinary personal service has had
significant and lasting effect on the advancement of the
College of Engineering.

Lifetime Achievement AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP
This special award honors an exceptional individual whose
sustained pioneering spirit and outstanding leadership
has inspired others and has had a profound economic,
environmental or societal impact. The award recognizes
individuals who have demonstrated ingenuity, creativity and

dedication to improving our world.
Distinguished ALUMNI AWARD
The Distinguished Alumni Awards were established by
the faculty of the College of Engineering to recognize
distinguished achievement on the part of alumni in the
field of engineering or architecture by reason of significantt
inventions, important research or design, administrative
leadership or genius in production. Nominations are
judged by the College Committee on Honorary Degrees
and Honors on behalf of the college faculty.

MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL
Thomas L. Thomas
Thomas Thomas retired as chairman of Creative
Solutions, Inc., which he helped grow into a leading
supplier of integrated software solutions for more than
35,000 U.S. public accounting firms before selling it to
Thomson Reuters in 1998. His first job out of college
was in technical computing for the engineering staff at
Ford Motor Co. He left Ford to join a start-up computer
timesharing company, which he helped build into a
successful international firm serving large corporations
in the U.S. and Europe. After the firm was sold to ADP
(Automatic Data Processing), he served as president of
Autonet—ADP’s international communications division.
He later spent seven years as a management consultant
and venture investor specializing in helping computer
software and service companies increase their growth
and profitability.
Thomas received the College of Engineering Texnikoi
Outstanding Alumni Award in 1980, has been a
member of the President’s Alumni Advisory Council and
previously served on The Ohio State University Research
Foundation Advisory Board for six years. He is a trustee
for Young Life, an international Christian outreach
organization serving young people in more than 70
countries, and has been selected to serve on the board
of more than a dozen public and private corporations.
Thomas and his wife Jan (’66) now spend their time
assisting non-profit organizations serving young people in
the U.S. and Africa.
Thomas graduated summa cum laude with his bachelor’s
(’66) and master’s (’66) degrees in electrical engineering
from The Ohio State University, and a master’s of
business administration from Michigan State University
in 1970. He served as the 1966 senior class president at
Ohio State and was named the Most Outstanding Electrical
Engineering Student in the U.S. in 1966 by Eta Kappa Nu.
Meritorious SERVICE CITATION
James F. Dietz
In 1969, James Dietz began his career with Standard
Oil of Ohio (Sohio) at the Vistron Chemical Plant in
Lima. He worked in various engineering and production
supervisor positions in the nitrogen fertilizer facilities
until 1980, when he transferred to Vistron’s new
grassroots chemical plant near Victoria, Texas. In 1986,
British Petroleum (BP) acquired Standard Oil of Ohio,
and, in 1989, Dietz accepted a position in London as
project director of a new European chemical plant.
After one year, he became production manager at BP
Chemical’s complex in Grangemouth, Scotland.
In 1993, Dietz resigned from BP after 24 years of
service to take the position of vice president of
manufacturing with Arcadian Corp. in Memphis, Tenn.
When Arcadian was purchased in 1997 by Potash
Corp. of Saskatchewan, he was named executive vice
president of PCS Nitrogen. In November 2000, he was
named executive vice president and chief operating
officer for Potash Corp. Dietz retired from Potash Corp.
in 2010.
Dietz currently serves on two committees at The Ohio
State University, the Koffolt Lab National Committee
and the But for Ohio State Campaign Committee as the
College of Engineering co-chair. He also serves on the
Board of Directors for Rentech Nitrogen Partners L.P.
Dietz earned both his bachelor’s (’69) and master’s (’70)
degrees in chemical engineering from The Ohio State
University. He received a Distinguished Alumnus Award
from the College of Engineering in 2009.
Texnikoi OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD
Tamer Ibrahim
Tamer Ibrahim is associate professor in the Departments
of Radiology and Bioengineering (Swanson School of
Engineering) at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also the
director of the university’s 7 Tesla Research Program and
Radio Frequency Research Facility. Prior to joining Pitt,
Ibrahim was assistant professor in the School of Electrical
& Computer Engineering at the University of Oklahoma.
His achievements include development of
electromagnetic prediction code for magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) coil design, new theories regarding
dielectric resonance and power requirements in MRI,
and the development of subject-insensitive RF transmit
arrays. He gave more than 60 invited/plenary lectures in
international scientific symposiums, non-local academic
centers and medical companies, and co-authored
more than 170 scientific journal articles, book chapters,
editorials and international conference proceedings.
He is an associate editor of the International Journal
on Antennas and Propagation, program director-elect
of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in
Medicine (ISMRM) Safety Group, a charter member of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Biomedical Imaging
Study Section and a member the NIH Small Business
Medical Imaging Study Section. He was a William Kepler
Whiteford Faculty Fellow (2010-2013) and chair of ISMRM
Engineering Group (2011-2012).
Ibrahim earned his bachelor’s (’96), master’s (’98) and
PhD (’03) in electrical engineering from The Ohio State
University.
Lifetime Achievement AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP
Kurt M. Dubowski
Kurt Dubowski’s professional activities have focused
on the twin tracks of laboratory medicine and forensic
science, especially clinical and forensic chemistry and
toxicology. He is the George Lynn Cross Distinguished
Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of
Oklahoma. His research in blood and breath-alcohol
science and technology became the signatory,
foundational basis for the medical and law enforcement
community’s methods for interpreting and verifying
the results of Breathalyzer tests used by all 50 states,
Canada and overseas countries.
Among his many awards and honors, Dubowski received
a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of
Engineering in 1994, a Lifetime Achievement Award from
the International Association for Chemical Testing in
2012 and was named the 12th R.B.H. Gradwohl Laureate
and R.B.H. Gradwohl Medallion Honoree – the foremost
peer award in the forensic sciences.
Dubowski has served as a consultant for a variety of U.S.
government agencies, including the President’s Special
Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention, the National
Transportation Safety Board and the Departments of
Justice and Defense. A 13-year U.S. Army veteran, he
is an honorary Texas Ranger, a member of the board of
directors of the International Association for Chemical
Testing Inc., scientific director emeritus of the Oklahoma
Department of Public Safety/Oklahoma Highway Patrol
and chairman emeritus of the Oklahoma Board of Tests
for Alcohol and Drug Influence.
Dubowski earned a bachelor’s in chemistry from New
York University (’46), a master’s (’47) and PhD (’49) in
chemical engineering from The Ohio State University,
and an honorary doctor of laws degree from Capital
University (’84).
Distinguished ALUMNI AWARDS
Yoni Adonyi
Yoni Adonyi is the first Omer Blodgett Endowed Chair in Welding
& Materials Joining Engineering at LeTourneau University in
Longview, Texas. Prior to joining LeTourneau in 1996, Adonyi
worked for more than seven years on weldability support for plate,
tubular and sheet projects for the United States Steel Corporation
Technical Center. He also was an adjunct professor at Carnegie
Mellon University. He is the co-author of a patent on joining of
mandrel bar for seamless pipe production and has contributed his
expertise to several books, journals and articles. In addition, he is
the owner and principal investigator of Adonyi Welding Consultants.
Adonyi is a member of the Steel Market Development Institute’s Welding
Advisory Group and the International Board of Trustees of Samara State
University in Russia. He received his bachelor’s from Timisoara Polytechnical
Institute (’76), and his master’s (’86) and PhD (’89) in welding engineering from
The Ohio State University.
Robert J. Borel
During his 26-year tenure at Worthington Industries, Robert Borel
served as vice president of engineering, group vice president,
vice president of operations and member of the board of
directors. Prior to this, he worked in machine design and new
product development at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New
York, for eight years. Borel retired from Worthington Industries
in 2000 and is currently CEO of BeamAlloy Technologies LLC in
Plain City. BeamAlloy is a private engineering and manufacturing
firm specializing in the ion beam-enhanced deposition coating
process, which improves resistance to abrasive wear, corrosion and surface
sticking on industrial tooling and medical device surfaces.
Borel has been active in the Ohio State EE/ECE Alumni Society since its
inception in 2009 and has served as its president since 2011. He has been
honored with the Order of the Golden Eagle – the highest honor bestowed by
his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s
(’65) and master’s (’65) in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University
and earned a master’s of business administration (’74) from the University of
Rochester.
Distinguished ALUMNI AWARDS
Michael Bragg
Michael Bragg currently serves as the Frank & Julie Jungers
Dean of Engineering at the University of Washington. He is a
former Ohio State faculty member who went on to hold numerous
leadership positions at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, including head of the aerospace department,
associate dean for research and administrative affairs, executive
associate dean for academic affairs and interim dean of the
College of Engineering. An aeronautical engineer by training,
his primary area of research is aircraft icing where he is an
international expert on the effect of ice accretion on aircraft aerodynamics and
flight safety. He directed more than $15 million in externally funded research and
published more than 200 research papers. Bragg is a co-founder of two startup
companies.
Among his many national honors, he is a Fellow of the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics. Bragg serves on the NASA Advisory Council
Aeronautics Committee. He earned his bachelor’s (’76) and master’s (’77)
in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign and his PhD (’81) in aeronautical and astronautical
engineering from The Ohio State University.
Songsdhit “Joe” Chongsiriwatana
Songsdhit “Joe” Chongsiriwatana was born in Australia and grew
up in Thailand. After graduating from The Ohio State University,
he worked mostly on the development of FDA regulated devices
in Ohio, Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2011, he
moved his family to Thailand to work for ZOE International
Ministries, a U.S. non-profit organization that rescues orphans and
victims of child trafficking. At ZOE, Chongsiriwatana is the senior
project engineer. He oversees construction projects, including
the construction of homes for child trafficking survivors, and
technology development for the child rescue team. He also teaches math and
science to the children.
Chongsiriwatana earned an international baccalaureate (’90) from the United
World College of the Atlantic, and a bachelor’s (’96) in electrical engineering and
a master’s (’98) in biomedical engineering from The Ohio State University.
Distinguished ALUMNI AWARDS
Paul T. Dubetz
Paul Dubetz is vice president - commercial for ExxonMobil Iraq
Ltd. He began his career as a petroleum reservoir engineer in
1981 with Mobil Oil Corporation in Denver, Colorado. During
the following 32 years with Mobil and ExxonMobil, he has held
positions responsible for reservoir engineering, crude oil trading,
and natural gas marketing in the United Kingdom, Singapore and
Jakarta. This was followed by positions in marketing of liquefied
natural gas with ExxonMobil in Qatar, helping conclude the first
sale of LNG to India, and, in Italy, serving as commercial manager
of Adriatic LNG Srl (ALNG) in constructing a new LNG import terminal in the
Adriatic Sea. He moved into his current position in 2011, based in Baghdad,
where he has responsibility for supporting ExxonMobil resource development
activity in Iraq. During his career, he and his family have lived in the U.S., UK,
Singapore, Indonesia, Qatar, Italy and the UAE.
Dubetz earned his bachelor’s (’80) in chemical engineering from The Ohio
State University, a master’s degree (’81) in petroleum engineering from Stanford
University and a master’s of business administration (’85) from the University of
Pennsylvania Wharton School.
Ray Harishankar
Ray Harishankar is an IBM Fellow and vice president of
technology & innovation within IBM Global Business Services.
He is responsible for ensuring that GBS has a strong portfolio of
business solutions and market differentiating software assets.
He is also an expert and thought leader in social, mobile, big
data analytics and cloud technology. Harishankar joined IBM in
1999 as an executive IT architect. In 2003, he was nominated
as an IBM Distinguished Engineer and elected to IBM Academy
of Technology. He has received three Outstanding Technical
Achievement Awards within IBM and was nominated as an IBM Fellow in 2006 –
the highest honor that an employee can receive for technical innovation.
Harishankar was named the Asian American Engineer of the year in 2009 by
the Chinese Institute of Engineers USA. At Ohio State, he serves on the College
of Engineering External Advisory Council and the Dept. of Computer Science
and Engineering Advisory Board. He received his master’s (’90) in computer and
information science from The Ohio State University and also holds a master’s
degree in physics from Madras University. He holds five patents and has filed for
several more.
Distinguished ALUMNI AWARDS
Ronald Jezerinac
Ronald Jezerinac founded structural engineering firm Jezerinac
Geers & Associates Inc. in 1981 with Richard E. Geers. In addition
to acting as project manager for major projects, he directs the
firm in the role of chairman and is a registered Professional
Engineer in 22 states. Examples of the firm’s work include: the
Ohio Union, Bill Davis Stadium, the Jerome Schottenstein Center
Basketball Training Complex, Bob Evans corporate headquarters,
Easton Town Center, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Northbank
Condominiums and Huntington Park.
Jezerinac is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction, Structural
Engineers Association of Ohio and the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio. He
earned his bachelor’s (’67) in civil engineering from The Ohio State University.
Bruce Lavash
Bruce Lavash is a Research Fellow at Procter & Gamble in
Cincinnati and a member of P&G’s prestigious Victor Mills Society,
which recognizes the corporation’s most innovative technologists.
During his career at P&G, he developed more than 30 U.S.
patents for paper-related consumer products that are today used
and recognized globally, including tissue paper and absorbent
products.
At Ohio State, Lavash serves as a member of the Alumni Advisory
Council, the University Honors External Advisory Committee; organizes
sponsors for the annual Fundamentals in Engineering Honors Program robot
competition; serves as a judge and speaker for the Denman Undergraduate
Research Forum and has been a participant in the First Year Experience
Leadership Collaborative. In addition, he conducts seminars with P&G
professionals in leadership, problem solving and communication for Ohio State
students; has been P&G’s top recruiter at Ohio State; and has helped secure
funding for several College of Engineering initiatives. His many contributions
to the university include a gift to support construction of Scott Laboratory. He
earned his bachelor’s (’77) and master’s (’78) in mechanical engineering from
The Ohio State University.
Distinguished ALUMNI AWARDS
Phillip Markwood
Phillip Markwood started his firm, Philip Markwood Architects, Inc.,
in 1973 and has been involved in a wide scope of projects, including
religious, educational, institutional, office, commercial and residential
projects for public and private clients. His award-winning projects
include the Younkin Success Center at Ohio State, the Worthington
Christian Church and the Moritz residence.
Markwood’s firm was the eighth recipient of the AIA Ohio Gold Medal
Firm Award. The award is bestowed upon one Ohio architectural
firm annually that consistently, over an extended period of time, distinguished itself
through excellence in the practice of architecture. He was elected to the College of
Fellows of The American Institute of Architects in 1990, a lifetime honor recognizing
contributions that advance the profession. In 1994, Markwood received the AIA
Ohio Gold Medal, the chapter’s most prestigious award.
His path of institute and community activities include presidencies of AIA
Columbus, AIA Ohio, and the Upper Arlington Community Improvement
Corporation, as well as National Board director, vice president and Ethics
Committee chair of AIA. Markwood earned a bachelor’s (’61) in architecture from
The Ohio State University, a bachelor of arts (’59) from Princeton University and a
master’s (’62) in architecture from Columbia University.
Alan McKnight
As director of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department
since 2007, Alan McKnight is actively participating in the
revitalization of downtown Columbus. He was instrumental in the
redevelopment of the Riverfront Amphitheater at Genoa Park, North
Bank Park and the Scioto Mile—the transformation of the downtown
Columbus riverfront. Prior to becoming director, he served as the
planning administrator for the department and was a landscape
architect for the City of Columbus. McKnight has been instrumental
in developing many of the most prominent recreational areas in
Columbus, including the Olentangy Trail, Antrim Park, Lou Berliner Park, North
Bank Park and Champions Golf Course.
In 2012, he received the German Village Society’s President’s Award, and he was
awarded the Ohio Chapter Medal for the American Society of Landscape Architects
in 2006. He has served as the Ohio Chapter president for ASLA, is a past member
of the Ohio Board of Landscape Architect Examiners, and serves on the boards of
directors for After-School All-Stars Ohio, the Columbus Crew Foundation, the GIAC
Audubon Stewardship Board and the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. He received a
bachelor’s (’76) in landscape architecture from The Ohio State University.
