STRATEGIES FOR FACILITY-WIDE PROTECTION
TPS adds value
Do I Need Protection?
1) International Innovative
Systems will consult with
engineers on new buildings
and do site surveys for existing
facilities and recommend
suppression strategies that
achieve the customer’s goals.
Some daily frustrations of doing business can
be symptoms of a dirty power supply. Do you
have some of these issues:
• Computers or controllers losing memory during operations?
• Telephone systems disconnect calls for no apparent reason?
• Replacing failed or damaged circuit boards?
• Would you like more reliable lightning protection?
• Replacing too many bulbs and ballasts?
• Would you like to extend the life of your electrical equipment?
• Interested in better reliability?
• Does your company focus on improved productivity?
• Concerned about equipment downtime?
• Would you like to reduce your maintenance expense?
2) Upon installation our
representatives can approve
installations.
3) Years after the installations,
our warranty support can assist
with trouble-shooting if products
self-sacrifice in the course of
protecting loads.
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, we invite you to
have your facility analyzed by our experienced team of experts.
Even if you already have surge suppression products in place,
our skilled team can give your system a check-up and identify
any areas needing improvement.
Call today, and let us show you how our surge protection
programs can mean total protection for your operation.
For power quality and performance, backed by an
unprecedented warranty and invaluable field experience,
choose Total Protection Solutions®.

Discuss your facility layout and your
priorities with a TPS representative.
Your solutions will be customized to fit
your needs and budget.

“We were experiencing fluctuations in the
power that was affecting our drive areas,
causing equipment replacement... there was an
abundance of voltage anomalies on the system.
Since the installation (of TPS surge suppression
units) we have had no issues related to our
power quality in this area.”

Threshold suppression designs begin to
attenuate voltage excursions at a set point above the
sine wave.
The Enhanced Tracking suppression
(ETF) design adds a filter component to the suppression
circuits. This attenuates transients inside the power envelope.

Transient Activity Prior to TVSS Installation
No Transient Activity after
TVSS Installation
Here is a sampling of a logic circuit before and after
the application of a TPS suppressor. This automated
machinery operated as intended for months, despite
constant exposure to repetitive 300+ volt events.
Eventually, however, these transients caused logic
disruption and catastrophic failure with significant
downtime costs. We can help you solve problems
and improve productivity with proper application of
TPS surge suppression devices.
(The phenomena of Type 1 damage – logic disruption - is discussed
in detail in IEEE Standard 1100-2005 4.4.5.1)
These electron microscope images illustrate
Type-III damage resulting from overvoltages
reaching the integrated circuitry.
(The phenomena of Type-III damage - hardware destruction - is discussed in detail in
IEEE Standard 1100-2005 4.4.5.3)
Note that the impulse was attenuated well within the
sine wave.
ANSI/IEEE terms this 29 volt remnant the “Measured
Limited Voltage”.
Where do Transients
Come From?
TPS provides customers with full
disclosure of the performance
characteristics of all its products.
This is critical information for suppression strategies which
will maximize performance value of a customer’s surge
suppression investment. Measured Limited Voltage values
are provided for all modes, on all products, for all exposure
levels (A, B and C) of a facility.
Common Misconception
The majority of voltage transients
originate outside the user’s facility.
Reality
High energy sources, like
lightning strikes, grid switching
& other utility faults typically
account for only 10% - 15%
of all transients recorded.
