Projects Day began in 2000 and has grown each year. With fifteen USMA departments and students from four other colleges participating in over 250 presentations, we are excited about this display of intellectual capital at this year’s event. Senior class members present their senior thesis, capstone projects, or research activities in either an individual or collective capacity. Students present to fellow cadets, faculty, clients, and, in some instances, to a group of guest evaluators. Highlights include capstone design projects, competition projects, thesis defenses, poster displays, various individual and group performances, film screenings, and presentations on various topics relevant to the Army and our social world. USMA staff, faculty, and cadets from all classes as well as our many guests and visitors are invited and encouraged to attend any and all of the presentations, which are scheduled from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm in various academic buildings throughout the post including Thayer Hall, Mahan Hall, Lincoln Hall, Washington Hall, Jefferson Hall, Bartlett Hall, Building 606 (Law) and the West Point Club Ballroom. Although students from the United States Military Academy comprise the largest group of presenters, students from visiting schools have become more pronounced in the event during recent years. This year we have students participating in Projects Day from a variety of schools including Columbia University, George Mason University, Stevens Institute of Technology and the United States Air Force Academy. Cadets will be competing for the annual Scott R. Clark (USMA 1985) Innovation for Soldiers Award. The award is presented to a cadet project that demonstrates an innovative approach to solving a problem of direct application to the Army. Additionally, cadets will be competing for the Walter W. Hollis Award which recognizes excellence in Operations Research or Systems Analysis. We welcome all guests who will be attending Projects Day, especially the guest evaluators and judges, students, and faculty from visiting schools. Additionally, we welcome special guests of the Academy and the West Point Association of Graduates. They have all made significant contributions in support of West Point and the Long Gray Line. Student presentations are identified in the program by time of day and affiliated department. A map of West Point and a map of the central area buildings where the presentations will be held are also provided in the program. We hope you enjoy the day! 3 Presentations will be held by Departments in the following locations: Bartlett Hall CLS – Dept of Chemistry and Life Science PANE – Dept of Physics and Nuclear Engineering DPE – Dept of Physical Education BLDG 606 LAW – Dept of Law Jefferson Hall DSE – Dept of Systems Engineering Lincoln Hall DEP – Dept of English and Philosophy SOSH – Dept of Social Sciences Mahan Hall CME – Dept of Civil & Mechanical Engineering Thayer Hall BSL – Behavioral Sciences & Leadership HIST – Dept of History Math – Dept of Mathematical Sciences Washington Hall DFL – Dept of Foreign Languages DMI – Dept of Military Instruction GENE – Dept of Geography & Environmental Engineering West Point Club EECS – Dept of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science 4 Map of Central Post Area 5 West Point Map 6 Awards The Scott R. Clark Innovation Award The Scott R. Clark (USMA 1985) Innovation for Soldiers Award is given to the project that best demonstrates an innovative approach to solving a problem of direct application to the soldier and to the Army. The donor states, “This gift is to encourage cadets to demonstrate for soldiers, innovations which can benefit soldiers.” Each department has the opportunity to nominate projects to compete for the award. Projects are evaluated based on the following criteria: Impact of the innovation to the soldier Scope of the Innovation (number of soldiers impacted) Significance of the innovation (evolutionary vs. revolutionary) Impact of the innovation to the Army The Projects Day panel that will select a winner is comprised of experienced soldiers from across the academy. The Walter W. Hollis Award The Walter W. Hollis Award recognizes excellence in military operations research or systems analysis. The Hollis Award is an annual competition co-sponsored by the USMA Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Systems Engineering. The award is named for the Honorable Walter W. Hollis, former Deputy Under Secretary of the Army for Operations Research, in recognition of his lifetime of distinguished service to the Army and the Nation. The award winner is selected based on work completed at the Academy that addresses issues confronting the profession of arms. The winner is selected based upon creativity, the application of mathematics, science, & systems engineering concepts, and effective communication of their findings in both writing and oral presentation. Intellectual Property and Patent Processing The RDECOM Armaments Research Development & Engineering Center's Patent Processing group will be on West Point for the entirety of Projects Day. Located in Jefferson Hall, Room 131, they have a staff of lawyers and intellectual property specialists present. If your project has a new concept or breakthrough embedded in the report, you need to complete a Invention Disclosure Form. This simple step will initiate the process and allow you to add "Patent Pending" to all future communications of your work. Send a project representative to JH 131 between 0900-1430hrs with your project write up. The ARDEC team will get you through the next step! 7 The United States Military Academy welcomes students and faculty from the following universities who are participating in Projects Day 2014: · · · · United States Air Force Academy Columbia University Stevens Institute of Technology George Mason University We also welcome students and faculty from the following schools who are visiting Projects Day and the United States Military Academy: · United States Military Academy Preparatory School · · · · · · West Point Middle School James I.
