Features

Programs are accredited by the National Council for
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the most
prestigious accrediting body in the nation, and by the
California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Students are assigned a Subject Area Coordinator for
advisement and support.

Field-based program allows students to apply theory to
practice in classroom settings. Cohorts of students study
and work together under the direction and supervision
of a team of university and K-12 faculty.

The Single Subject Credential Program includes
certification in teaching English learners.

Methods courses and supervision are content-specific.

Intern program allows qualified candidates to earn their
credential while employed as public school classroom
teachers, part-time or full-time.

Our two-semester system program features a gradual induction of student teaching or co-teaching model.

Program faculty are involved in our neighboring schools,
collaborating with teachers to improve policy and practice.
All faculty have K-12 teaching experience. They have
published numerous articles; obtained millions of dollars
in annually funded grants; and are recognized regionally,
nationally, and internationally.

 Educational Basic Skills Proficiency—
Successful passage of one of the following exams:
1. CBEST; 2. Multiple Subjects CSET plus Writing Exam;
3. CSU Early Assessment Program or CSU English and
Math Placement Exams
 Prerequisite Coursework—Successful completion of
EDSC 310, EDSC 320, EDSC 330 & EDSC 340. GPA of
3.0 required across the prerequisite courses
 GPA—2.67 cumulative or 2.75 in the last 60 semester
units attempted (or written exception from Credential
Program Subject Area Coordinator)
 English Language Proficiency—a prompted writing
sample and oral interview required
 Faculty/Personal Recommendations—3 current
recommendations [2 from faculty and 1 from other]
 TB Test—Provide evidence of a recent tuberculosis test
(within last 4 years)
 Certificate of Clearance—FBI background check
through CTC (fingerprints required)
 CPR Training Certification—Red Cross Certified

Single Subject Credential Program
Program Format
The Secondary Education Cooperative Teacher Education Program
(SECTEP) is an interdisciplinary program that connects the three
main elements of teacher training (subject matter preparation, pedagogical training, and field experiences) through collaboration
among the Department of Secondary Education, university
academic departments and programs, and local school districts.
The program is organized around the California Teaching
Performance Expectations. Credentials are offered in:
The credential program is two full-time semesters. Prior to
program entrance, prerequisite courses are required. In Prerequisite Courses, prospective teacher candidates are introduced to teaching through an early field experience and courses
on adolescence, literacy development, and student diversity.
They may also complete a course in computer technologies and
a course in teaching English learners.

In the First Semester of the program, candidates are gradually inducted into the teaching experience in an environment of
collegiality and support, or are involved in co-teaching with a
cooperating teacher. They become familiar with their master
teachers and the characteristics, programs, and cultures of their
schools. First semester credential candidates attend weekly
seminars on general pedagogy, content-specific methods, and
teaching English learners.

Additional Prerequisites for candidates interested in the Intern
Program during the First Semester:
-Instructional Methods for Secondary Teaching Module
-EDSC 410 : Teaching English Learners
FIRST SEMESTER:
EDSC 410: Teaching English Learners in Secondary School
EDSC 440F: Supervised Fieldwork in Secondary Schools
Throughout the program, candidates develop skills and
knowledge to meet the California Teaching Performance
Expectations. They are introduced to the California Teaching
Performance Assessment (TPA) and complete TPA 1 and 2 in
the First Semester.
EDSC 440S: General Pedagogy of Secondary School
In the Second Semester of the program, candidates take
full control of three classes, or continue co-teaching, and
have a conference /preparation period. During this semester,
candidates attend a weekly seminar led by a university
instructor and complete requirements to successfully pass
TPA 3 and 4.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR CREDENTIAL;
EDSC 304: Educational Technologies for Secondary Teachers
EDSC 304 is required for the Single Subject Preliminary Credential.
In some subject areas, it is part of the Subject Matter Preparation
Program and must be completed before entering the program.
