Admissions Requirements Subject Matter Competency—Successful completion Single Subject Credential Program Features Programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the most prestigious accrediting body in the nation, and by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Students are assigned a Subject Area Coordinator for advisement and support. Field-based program allows students to apply theory to practice in classroom settings. Cohorts of students study and work together under the direction and supervision of a team of university and K-12 faculty. The Single Subject Credential Program includes certification in teaching English learners. Methods courses and supervision are content-specific. Intern program allows qualified candidates to earn their credential while employed as public school classroom teachers, part-time or full-time. Our two-semester system program features a gradual induction of student teaching or co-teaching model. Program faculty are involved in our neighboring schools, collaborating with teachers to improve policy and practice. All faculty have K-12 teaching experience. They have published numerous articles; obtained millions of dollars in annually funded grants; and are recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally. of a Subject Matter Preparation Program OR passage of all required subtests of the California Subject Exam for Teachers Educational Basic Skills Proficiency— Successful passage of one of the following exams: 1. The program is organized around the California Teaching Performance Expectations. Credentials are offered in: The credential program is two full-time semesters. Prior to program entrance, prerequisite courses are required. In Prerequisite Courses, prospective teacher candidates are introduced to teaching through an early field experience and courses on adolescence, literacy development, and student diversity. They may also complete a course in computer technologies and a course in teaching English learners. First semester credential candidates attend weekly seminars on general pedagogy, content-specific methods, and teaching English learners. They are introduced to the California Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) and complete TPA 1 and 2 in the First Semester. EDSC 440S: General Pedagogy of Secondary School In the Second Semester of the program, candidates take full control of three classes, or continue co-teaching, and have a conference /preparation period. During this semester, candidates attend a weekly seminar led by a university instructor and complete requirements to successfully pass TPA 3 and 4. SECOND SEMESTER: *(EDSC) 442: Teaching in Secondary Schools *(EDSC) 449E: First Semester Student Teaching *(EDSC) 449I: Second Semester Student Teaching *(EDSC) 449S: Seminar in Secondary Teaching EDSC 460: Teaching Performance Assessment Seminar *Some sections are taught by Departments across campus (outside of Secondary Education) COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR CREDENTIAL; EDSC 304: Educational Technologies for Secondary Teachers EDSC 304 is required for the Single Subject Preliminary Credential. In some subject areas, it is part of the Subject Matter Preparation Program and must be completed before entering the program.
