FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Belkin and EFI Lead $US 860 Million American Market for Surge Protection Natick, Massachusetts – October 29, 2008 – In 2007, Belkin International was the leading vendor in the $US 549 million American market for plug-in surge suppressors (Exhibit 1). These devices are primarily sold in outlet strip form factors for use in home and office environments. Belkin’s leadership can be attributed in large part to its well-established brand name in the consumer electronics space. “By investing in the same level of industrial design in the development of its surge protectors as it does with other product lines, Belkin is able to offer models with unique features and functions,” said Brian Greenberg, lead analyst for VDC’s Power Conversion and Control Practice. Tripp Lite and Phillips Electronics were also leading vendors in this market. Tripp Lite focuses on the office environment and niches such as industrial, networking and medical environments. Philips’ acquisition of Fiskar’s Power Sentry in 2006 has allowed it to focus on general applications with the Power Sentry brand, and extend its presence in the home entertainment segment with its higher-price point Philips products. However, EFI, along with its closest competitors, Emerson Network Power (ENP) and Eaton Electrical, are units within larger parent companies, Schneider Electric, Emerson Electric Company and Eaton Corporation, respectively.
