Idea Factory: A Meaningful Driver for Engineering Education Abstract: During the past decades, Korean economy has been developed rapidly with an economic model of more input and efficiency. However, the economic model which focused on the growth only exposed the limitations and the demand for welfare has been raised. To solve the problem, in the developed countries, many trials has been made to combine the technology and society. One of the well-known trials is appropriate technology. Appropriate technology is vastly superior to the primitive technology of bygone ages but at the same time much simpler, cheaper, and freer than the super-technology of the rich (Schumacher, 1973). Despite of the meaningful definition, it has faced with a number of failures. Technologies without consideration of user environment and economic sustainability could not be well adapted. Not to follow these examples, technology should meet the social needs. Technology can be properly used to meet the social needs of the neglected ones including the disabled, the elderly and the infirm, and to solve the social issues arising from the environmental and the criminal problems. In addition, to solve the sustainability issue, technological ideas and business mind should be in harmony. Idea Factory (IF) in KAIST is an experiment to solve these issues. First, to discover the ideas, various types of social issues are figured out with methodologies such as Delphi method and scenario analysis. To realize these ideas, the concept of fablab in which students can make anything with tools (3D printer, Laser cutter, milling machine) was adopted 3D printer, Laser cutter. Not only the students can use the tools, but they also can have lectures of engineering, creative thinking, and business courses. While the idea enter market, after the prototyping, developers face the problems of ideation, commercialization, and industrialization. To cross over the ‘Chasms’ KITECH develops the prototypes from the IF and RISTI develops business models. The ideas which went through the steps of prototyping can enter the market based on these supportive efforts. Finally, to maintain this process, an eco-system has to be built up. Not only KAIST and KITECH, NGOs, government and social enterprises should cooperate with to enable sustainable value creation. 12 Program and Abstract Book for 7th International Conference AMDP 2014 Plenary Speech 2 : Professor Jitai Niu School of Materials Science and Engineering Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), P.R.China (Email: niujitai@163.com) Professor NIU devotes the research on weldability of new materials as well as physical and numerical simulation of materials processing. Professor NIU was elected as the Chairman of International Federation of Physical and Numerical Simulation of Materials Processing (IFPNS) which was founded at the 7th International Conference on Physical and Numerical Simulation of Materials Processing held in Oulu , Finland in June16-19, 2013. Vacuum Brazing of High Volume Fraction SiC Particles Reinforced Aluminum Matrix Composites Abstract: This experiment chooses A356 aluminum matrix composites containing 55% SiC particle reinforcing phase as the parent metal and Al-Si-Cu-Zn-Ni alloy metal as the filler metal. The brazing process is carried out in vacuum brazing furnace at the temperature of 550℃ and 560℃ for 3 minutes. The interfacial microstructures and fracture surfaces are investigated by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy spectrum analysis (EDS). The result shows that the wettability as well as the adequacy of element diffusion are superior when brazing at 560℃, because of higher activity and liquidity. Dislocations and twins are observed at the interface between filler and composite due to the different expansion coefficient of the aluminum alloy matrix and SiC particles. The fracture analysis shows that the brittle fracture mainly locates at interface of filler and composites. Finally, physical model of brazing process is briefly established. 13 Program and Abstract Book for 7th International Conference AMDP 2014 Plenary Speech 3 : Professor Hyoung-Jin Cho Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Central Florida, Orlando, USA (Email: hjcho@ucf.edu) Hyoung-Jin Cho is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida, USA. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2002, MS and BS in Materials Engineering from Seoul National University in 1991 and 1989, respectively. He worked as Research Engineer at Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) from 1993 to 1997. He joined UCF in 2002 as an Assistant Professor. He was a recipient of US National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2004 and WCU (World Class University) visiting professorship (2009-2013) by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Korea. The application of new and emerging materials into MEMS host device platforms has always been his primary research interest. His current research interests include smart surfaces for wettability control, nanoparticle-integrated gas sensors, ROS (reactive oxygen species) sensors, graphene-based actuators and thermocapillary-driven droplet manipulation. Liquid actuators based on electrocapillary and thermocapillary Abstract: Liquid actuators which utilize physical phenomena taking place at an interface between two fluids and a solid (wetting line) and an interface between three fluids (triple contact line) are presented. A droplet placed on a solid surface or floating on another immiscible liquid is taken as a model for study. In the former case, the physical interactions that involve wetting line energy, wetting line velocity, pinning and contact angle hysteresis have been accounted for in designing and explaining the operation of a constant flow-rate microfluidic pump based on EWOD (electrowetting-on-dielectrics). In the liquid actuator which acts as a micropump, a pressure gradient is induced between a droplet and a meniscus in the channel without any moving parts. The surface tension could be changed due to the varying electric potential, which enables on-demand on/off flow regulation. The non-mechanical valve switching in relation to EWOD voltages and the on-demand pumping with respect to various droplet sizes are proposed and explained. The predicted driving pressure from the model study was correlated to the measured data from the device. Dynamic behaviors that are comprised of contact angle hysteresis, wetting line velocity effect, and electowetting are analyzed with the fabricated device platform. The results implicate that these effects, often being ignored during the implementation, must be taken into consideration. Also, he has developed extreme high-current-density ion beam system using the concave electrode in both low and high beam energy regions for the nuclear fusion and material production. In recent ten years, he is studying on plasma applications such as material productions, combustion controls, laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, and especially, medical treatment using newly developed “mild plasma” from the pathological viewpoint through collaborations with medical doctors. He published about 100 scientific papers on plasma physics and submitted to many patents on plasma technologies. Industrial applications using innovative plasma technologies (Developments of the low energy ion beam, and studies on medical applications) Abstract: Innovative Plasma Technologies Group at AIST has been studied for the realization of safe and secure world using several plasma technologies. In this presentation, I will show the study on low-energy ion beam system, and low temperature plasma application to the medical use. Phenomena of spontaneous strong focusing of an ion beam with a high current density (> 1 mA/cm2) and an extremely low energy (~ 150 eV) have been studied in various operating conditions. When the hydrogen ion beam energy reached around 150 eV, the ion beam transits from a diverged state to a focused state non-lineally, which is accompanied by an abrupt appearance of electron current density having the almost same value as that of ion beam. He is the author of ten books and has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, got award for oral presentations in the conference Effect of spacer layer on enhancement and quenching of photoluminescence by surface plasmon Abstract: Metal nanoparticles have the ability to localize and strongly enhance the incident electromagnetic field due to the surface plasmon polariton. The coupling between AuNPs and ZnO thin films affects their emission properties. In this study, we prepared the ZnO/Al2O3/AuNPs multilayer films, and investigated the effect of spacer layer on enhancement and quenching of photoluminescence by surface plasmon. The emission intensities of the thin films vary when Al2O3 space layer with different thickness was embedded in the ZnO/Au films, consistent with theoretical predictions. The photoluminescence modulation is also made via controlling the polarization of the excitation source. The photoluminescence anisotropy of these systems shows that enhanced photoluminescence can be achieved through coupling of the emission from ZnO with the surface plasmon resonance of AuNPs. 16 Program and Abstract Book for 7th International Conference AMDP 2014 Plenary Speech 6 : Professor M.A. More Department of Physics University of Pune, India (Email: mam@physics.unipune.ac.in) Dr. Mahendra A. He was a director of Innovation Center for Engineering Education (ICEE) at Korea Maritime and Ocean University. He founded the Asian Conference on Engineering Education (ACEE) in 2009. He is trying to promote the innovation in engineering education by cooperation with Asian country. His research area includes the composites fabrication, the evaluation of strength and physical metallurgy. He is the author of five books and has published more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, got awards for oral presentations in the conference. Application of composite materials to the maritime and ocean Abstract: Composite material is a rising new material in the industry because it is light in weight, very durable, and corrosion resistant. Meanwhile, various environmental concerns caused by global warming had drawn the interest of scientists to prevent further contamination. Green industrialization is also required to shipping and ship building industries, and many agreements and treaties are passed at an international level to encourage the demand of “Green Ship” technology. Especially, researchers in IMO developed EEDI technology to reduce green-house gases exhausted from large vessels. In the process, a proper composite material must be used in order to increase propulsion efficiency and reduce the overall weight of a ship. In case of an oil drilling ship, a type of off shore vessel, the ship must be supplied with special pipes that endure water pressure, current, and chemicals when it extracts oils or gases in deep sea. Experts think that the materials commonly used in current ship building industries ought to be reconsidered and reviewed, and suggest that introducing new composite materials to the industry will help to serve the purpose more efficiently. Therefore, replacing current materials with new composite materials that are applicable in areas of Marine Equipment Engineering and offshore plant remains as researchers’ one of big assignments. 18 Program and Abstract Book for 7th International Conference AMDP 2014 Keynote Speakers Professor Chiu, S.H Nat'l Taiwan University of Science and Technology Taiwan, Taiwan Topic : Optimization of process parameters for dimensional accuracy in an area-forming rapid prototyping system using Taguchi method Professor Tae-Gyu Kim Pusan National University, Korea Topic : Fabrication and Characteristic study for Micro Pattern Roll Mold with DLC Coating Dr. Jae-Ho Kim National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology(AIST), Japan Topic : Advanced microwave plasma CVD processes for the synthesis of nanocrystalline diamond and graphene films Professor Song, X.P.
