THE NEW GENERATION OF LARGE SRPs/STPs SCHOTTEL AZIMUTH THRUSTERS YOUR PROPULSION EXPERTS 3 2 NEW THRUSTER GENERATION The SCHOTTEL Rudderpropeller is the classic product from the SCHOTTEL range. Since its origin more than 60 years ago, the SRP has been continuously improved and adapted to the needs of our customers. Now a new thruster generation has been released, hydrodynamically optimized using CFD techniques as well as model tests. The latest findings in azimuth thruster technology have been implemented, resulting in a state-of-the-art product. Both types are available with a variety of reduction ratios to suit all common input speeds regardless of whether they are driven by a diesel engine or an electric motor. However, the new thruster series offers a high commonality of parts throughout the different reduction ratios – resulting in enhanced spare parts availability. The thruster is even more compact than the existing models and is a practically self-contained system requiring only a minimum of mechanical and electrical interfacing. The new generation is of course available with either a single propeller, known as the SRP, or a twin propeller with two propellers on one shaft rotating in the same direction, known as the STP. SRP STP SRP · Rudderpropeller STP · Twin Propeller FOR DEMANDING APPLICATIONS OFFSHORE The new thruster generation is ideal for any kind of offshore operation. Robustness, compactness, eco-friendliness and ease of maintenance are a prerequisite for ships working in the harsh offshore environment. All thrusters are prepared for integration of the SCHOTTEL Condition Monitoring System S-COM which allows foresighted maintenance planning. TUGS Tug operation profiles are becoming more and more demanding and require high power on a space-restricted platform. With its improved hydrodynamic and compact design, the new thruster series offers the optimum answer to these demands. FERRIES SCHOTTEL azimuth thrusters have proven their uniqueness in many ferries, already providing excellent manoeuvrability to each vessel. Not only the SRP but even more so the SCHOTTEL Twin Propeller is in many cases the first choice thanks to its compact design and high efficiency. 5 4 HYDRAULIC CLUTCH The new thruster generation comes with an independent, hydraulically operated multi-disc clutch, which not only engages and disengages the drive train from the thruster but also drives the hydraulic units of the thruster, making it practically selfcontained. To improve the ease of maintenance and simplify the system as much as possible, the clutch is installed separately outside the gearbox and uses the same type of oil for operation and cooling as is used for lubrication of the thruster. No additional auxiliary units are needed to operate the clutch. Hydraulic clutch with pulley to drive the steering pump SRP · Rudderpropeller STP · Twin Propeller HYDRAULIC MULTI-DISC BRAKE In addition to the hydraulically operated clutch, the new thruster generation comes with a hydraulically operated multidisc holding brake, which is used to block the propeller from turning during service and maintenance work. The brake basically follows the same principle as the hydraulic clutch except that it has a fixed outer part fitted to the gearbox housing. Multi-disc hydraulic brake Like the clutch, the brake is a separate system outside the upper gearbox and is fully self-contained, requiring no mechanical interface or auxiliary units outside the thruster. The brake, too, uses the same type of oil as used for thruster lubrication. 7 6 LATEST DEVELOPMENTS SLIPPING CLUTCH SCHOTTEL offers a new hydraulic slipping clutch, which can be mounted on the upper gearbox instead of the standard clutch. To sustain the ease of maintenance, the clutch comes in a separate housing which provides a power take-off for driving the hydraulic steering equipment. Thus the complete thruster is as self-contained as with the standard clutch, but needs only a minimum of mechanical and electrical interfaces. PTO drive Low noise In addition to the engaging and disengaging function of a standard clutch, the slipping clutch offers the possibility of controlling the propeller rpm from almost zero to the idle speed of the engine and is thus an ideal add-on for diesel direct-driven DP 2 vessels with fixed pitch propellers, double-ended ferries and tugboats using an engine with high idle speed. Thanks to the intuitive user interface, these data can be quickly and easily sent to the SCHOTTEL Service Team or to Fleet Management. This analytical tool makes the on-board assignment of a service technician unnecessary. Deviations from the optimum operating condition (e.g. fuel or energy consumption) can be identified and corrected by on-board personnel and settings can be calibrated. This form of interactive communication enables malfunctions to be quickly and efficiently rectified and downtimes to be significantly minimized. The system can also be retrofitted on older plants. The quickest and most efficient form of system analysis is via secure remote access (satellite, UMTS). Alternatively, the data can also be conventionally transferred using a USB stick and then by e-mail. ADVANTAGES OF S-ODS • Optimization/avoidance of service assignments due to up-front analysis of faults • On-line diagnosis by remote access • Optimization of maintenance intervals • Detailed fault analysis • Intuitive alarm and fault history for maintenance optimization • Reduction of failure risk and off-hire periods • Parameters can also be optimized by on-board personnel • Simple system diagnosis • Communication link to Fleet Management The SCHOTTEL Copilot lever has been redesigned taking the latest ergonomic expertise into account. All necessary functions are available on a smaller platform.
