Itzamar was part of the school’s Academic All-Star team this year as she has shown more than a year’s growth on the Galileo Benchmark assessment. By design, Imagine Schools serves many students like Itzamar. We partner with parents who desire that their children progress academically and also become people of great character. Itzamar’s story is possible because of passionate educators who inspire students to grow and succeed academically against great odds. To guide us in this endeavor, we have strengthened our leadership team substantially. I am pleased to announce that the Board of Imagine Schools Non-Profit has named Barry Sharp as President and CEO of its organization. Barry will also continue in his role as Chief Financial Officer for all of Imagine. In addition, Jason Bryant has been named President and CEO of Imagine Schools, Inc. We Are Imagine! Dennis Bakke Chancellor and Co-Founder | 5 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report As we enter another year of partnering with families and educating children, it is important for Imagine Schools to evaluate and share what inspires the determination and grit to raise the bar for our students—and for us… Inspıred | 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report 6 T … his year’s report has special meaning within the Imagine family. As we celebrate a change in national leadership, we have the chance to reflect on our history, where we are today, and the continuing journey before us. It gives us an opportunity for transparency in both our celebrations and challenges. We are also afforded a moment to define what inspires us to achieve greater accountability, increased accomplishment, and lasting impact. When Dennis and Eileen Bakke founded Imagine Schools in 2004, they envisioned campuses where all children—regardless of means—have access to high-quality education that prepares them for lives of leadership, accomplishment, and exemplary character. Today, that vision encompasses 71 campuses, more than 3,500 educators, and the llives of more than 36,000 children. This growth has, in large part, been achieved through the Bakke’s unwavering commitment to loving and serving students and families. As they transition into new roles of Co-Founders, with Dennis as Chancellor and Eileen as Senior Vice President, we celebrate this continuing foundation. We celebrate the collaboration and community that has been established through our Shared Values, Measures of Excellence, and dedication to offering a vibrant education to our students. At the same time, we look to the future and what it will take to ensure all students leave our campuses well prepared for success in college and life. We know that academics must go deeper so student achievement soars higher. A number of Imagine campuses have earned the distinction as Blue Ribbon and “A” rated schools. We must tackle the challenge of ensuring this same level of academic consistency among all of our campuses. “…where all children— regardless of means— have access to highquality education that prepares them for lives of leadership, accomplishment, and exemplary character.” This year, Imagine Schools made the commitment to deepen both the rigor and relevance of our academic program. Inspired by the vision of Dr. Nancy Hall, our Chief Academic Officer, we developed an Academic Excellence Framework to be implemented at every Imagine campus for the 2013-2014 school year. We believe this Framework will offer our educators common vocabulary, common tools, and a shared vision for continually improving the outcomes for our students. Education is undergoing significant transformation. We know the impact of globalization will increase and the chasm in employment will continue to widen between degreed and non-degreed workers. More than ever, we are inspired to serve, lead, and equip our students for success in this new economy. Looking into their eyes, we find the inspiration to reach higher, try harder, and achieve more. Cordially, Barry Sharp Jason Bryant President & CEO, President & CEO, Imagine Schools Non-Profit Imagine Schools | 7 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report Inspired Approach Our approach is built upon expectations high enough to live up to a child’s potential. It is imperative for student success that academics go deeper—and student outcomes reach higher. Our values-based culture inspires learners to become leaders. At Imagine Schools, success means developing character and enriching minds as we graduate students well prepared for college, career, and life. | 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report 8 Inspired Values I magine Schools’ Shared Values of Justice, Integrity, and Fun inspire the foundation for excellence in education and life. Imagine educators aspire to live by these values daily and teach them to our students. Justice gives to each person what he or she deserves and what is appropriate. Justice requires doing all in our power to ensure that every Imagine student has access to an outstanding education. Driven by the unique abilities and needs of each student, Imagine educators design instruction to equip all students to become successful learners. We align goals for each student and adult in our schools with what they need and deserve. Integrity means wholeness, or how things fit together. Integrity drives us to live and model consistent ethics inside and outside the school. Integrity requires responsibility and accountability. It means every aspect of what and how we teach is done with rigor and fidelity. We hold ourselves individually and collectively accountable for strong academic outcomes, with each individual fulfilling his or her responsibility so that all students can succeed. Fun means cultivating a Joy at Work “One of the things that appealed to me about Imagine is the fact that the Shared Values strive to educate the whole student. While it is a school, and academics are the main priority, stressing integrity and justice daily in my classroom feels right. ‘I Am Imagine’ refers to carrying these beliefs beyond the school to my personal life.” —TEACHER AT IMAGINE BELLA ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE, CLEVELAND, OHIO environment in every school we operate. In our schools, each person has the opportunity to use his or her unique talents and experience to make important decisions contributing to the success of the school. Joy at Work combines integrity and justice with accountability for our decisions in order to achieve outstanding results for students and families. | 9 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report Inspired Measures A highly effective school results from a rigorous academic program in a culture of trust and high expectations, led by a visionary instructional leadership team and implemented by talented, dedicated teachers. At Imagine Schools we monitor and evaluate our school performance based on Measures of Excellence. Academic Growth defines our strong belief that students’ progress toward proficiency and beyond is the most accurate indicator both of a student’s and a school’s academic strength. It is imperative that every Imagine student develops the skills and habits for successful learning. Imagine educators, students, parents, and Board members support and adhere to the Imagine Schools Academic Excellence Framework, which specifies increased rigor, focus, effectiveness, and accountability. This Framework includes an expectation that every student will reach or exceed grade level proficiency within three years while attending an Imagine School. Imagine educators design their instruction to empower each student to make significant academic progress that is both measured and celebrated. Character Development begins with Imagine teachers and staff teaching, modeling and integrating virtues into every aspect of the school curriculum and culture. Students learn to set academic and personal goals. They grow in their ability to successfully meet their goals as they practice integrity and diligence, while taking responsibility for their studies. Our focus on character helps students attain the virtuous habits needed to live fruitful, honorable lives. Parent Choice is a key indicator of Imagine Schools’ performance. Parents choose an Imagine school because the school provides the academic quality, character development, and nurturing environment they want for their children. Imagine Schools’ educators provide a positive learning environment by working closely with parents and guardians to fulfill a collaborative responsibility for the academic and personal growth of their children. Economic Sustainability means stewarding public funds to optimize our students’ educational outcomes. Imagine educators ensure, to the best of their ability, that our schools operate within their means and that all resources are used to benefit students’ education. Meeting our commitments to academic excellence, character development, and parent choice contributes to fully enrolled and economically sustainable schools. “The climate this year at my workplace has been one of the best I have ever seen. The addition of a Curriculum and Instruction Advisor plus the continued support of my Dean of Students and Principal have really helped create an environment that is receptive to the teachers’ and students’ needs, wants, and hopes. There is less stress and work being placed on individual people and more as actual task forces come together to do their part.” —MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER AT IMAGINE SCHOOLS AT DESERT WEST, PHOENIX, AZ School Development refers to Imagine Schools’ operational strength—improving each school and enhancing our ability to serve students with a rigorous, relevant education. He read 40 words per minute when I sat with him that first week of school. He was physically shaking as he read and he would not answer my questions. He did not seem to be motivated by academic success but I knew he had it in him. As the year went on, he learned that my class was a safe place for him. He began to make friends. I praised him as we read together and he began reading with more confidence. I would tell him ahead of time when I was going to call on him. I even gave him the question I wanted him to answer ahead of time so he could feel the joy of participating in class. By mid-year, he was volunteering to read in class. I monitored his progress every week and he worked diligently on fluency, regularly practicing at home. By the end of the year, he was jumping out of his seat to participate. He was reading 110 words per minute, received an award for academic growth, and even made the honor roll. Seeing the smile on his face was priceless. She was born with more than her share of health problems. I have often felt like we were on an island. I was alone in fighting for what was best for her. Last year, my beautiful little girl once again found herself very ill. Her teacher did not seem to like her, students were teasing her and her self-esteem began to suffer. My little girl was having meltdowns in school, biting herself and making statements such as ‘I hate myself’ and ‘I just want to die.’ Suddenly this lonely island I was on began to feel like it was sinking. When [she] entered Mrs. Ely’s classroom both of our lives changed dramatically. I no longer feel like I have to fight alone for what is best for my daughter. She is loved so much that she can’t wait to go to school. Mrs. Ely does not tolerate any of the bullying that had happened previously. She has taught her classroom about Justice in such a way that all of the students understand that my daughter has special needs and they love her and respect her despite these things. She is now thriving in her classroom. I no longer feel alone in the fight for my child and I no longer feel like I have to fight. Mrs. Ely has not only changed my daughter’s educational experience, but she has helped her change the way she feels about herself, resulting in a life change for both of us.” —SECOND GRADE PARENT AT IMAGINE MADISON AVENUE SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, TOLEDO, OH | 13 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report Imagine Schools Academic Excellence Framework n a quest to improve the academic outcomes of every Imagine Schools Shared Values student served, Imagine Schools spent the 2012–2013 school year developing the Academic Excellence National Academic Team, this Framework serves as Imagine Schools’ roadmap, a structure that guides every educator at each campus toward a clearly defined direction. Nadja Pardo, National Character Council Co-Chair and Media Specialist at Imagine Weston in Florida, explains the recognition is the result of a long-term commitment on the part of educators, parents, and students to make character education integral throughout Imagine Schools. “In 2011, we initially applied for the award and were named a finalist,” Pardo states. “We learned from that process and applied again. We shared demographic information, standardized test results, behavioral and attendance data, our philosophy of character, and actions taken to foster and nurture character development in our students.” Once named a finalist, Sherrill led a task force of character leaders from across the nation, which included Pardo and others, to coordinate site visits, testimonials, and involvement from school leaders and teachers nationwide. “Coming from a school with endless bullying, Imagine has been a miracle. To do this, he is relentless in using data to drive his instructional approach within the classroom. He forms comparative charts using the surrounding district’s performance to evaluate his classroom benchmark tests. This allows him to identify gaps in his students’ performance and plan instruction to address specific areas of weaknesses and strengths. He even uses parent data from Imagine’s annual parent surveys to identify and address areas of concern through campus-wide action plans. He recognizes that successful outcomes require a partnership between the school and home. As a result, he uploads weekly updates to YouTube that parents and students view again and again. These video newsletters allow families to see inside the classroom and better engage with weekly content. Mr. Cunningham also ensures every student understands his or her unique value within the broader world. From “walking field trips” to a nearby assisted living community where students recite poetry to organizing an anti-bullying 5K walk/run on the school grounds to raise money and awareness, his students have a connection with their surrounding community. Inspired Future Looking toward the future, Imagine educators are driven by the imperative of raising the expectations and outcomes for our students—and our organization. We are focused on the full implementation of our Academic Excellence Framework so students achieve more robust learning gains and greater academic consistency across our multiple and diverse campuses. This accomplishment won’t be easy. We know it will require relentless attention and effort from our stakeholders. We realize it demands our reaffirmation and commitment to national best practices. TXMD SC MI DC IN OH CO FL PA NV CA AZ 0.97 An independent longitudinal study of Math and Reading learning gains is based upon assessment cycles from Fall 2009 through Spring 2013. The progression of mean test scores in Math and Reading highlights consistent declines during summer break. Imagine Schools is using this data to determine ways of overcoming what is commonly referred to as a summer slump, so students are better able to retain and build upon academic gains made during the school year as they progress by grade level. Jessica Zuk Jennifer Zuppinger | 39 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report Imagine Schools Academic Assessment Program The Imagine Schools assessment program is based on the following core concepts that are an integral part of the Imagine Schools philosophy: 1. The primary internal evaluation of schools, teachers, and programs is based on student progress (learning gains) measured by analyzing student change over the academic year (Fall to Spring), rather than performance at one point in time. Performance standards are important and our long term goal for every student is to achieve or exceed proficiency, regardless of incoming abilities. We have observed that: a. Performance standards measured at only one point in time tend to be affected more by the incoming knowledge and skills of students and less by the actual impact of the school. The use of these standards in isolation leads to a school’s focus on the students near the standard to the exclusion of students far away from meeting the standard in both directions. b. Utilizing gain measures determined by Spring to Spring comparisons are problematic due to the exclusion of the end of the current year, the inclusion of the end of the previous year, and the summer break. Our experience and the research literature demonstrate clearly that the impact of the summer break varies with student socioeconomic status and experience. Spring to Spring comparisons systematically excludes new students who do not have test scores from the previous year. 2. Baseline data should be collected and available as soon as possible at the beginning of the school year and should represent the students’ position at the beginning of the school year, not many months earlier. 3. There should be common data and a common language surrounding data for all of the schools within Imagine. 4. Student progress measures should be easily computed, summarized, and comparable across any relevant variable (e.g. grade, teacher, ethnicity English language status, economic status) on a school, region, and corporate level. In order to achieve these objectives we are currently using the Stanford 10 test series administered at the beginning and the end of the school year in every Imagine School. We administer these tests in hard copy format and are able to score the tests in-house and provide the schools testing results within five days of completion of the test administration. This provides baseline data at the beginning of the school year and allows for the analysis of student progress soon after the school year ends for use in planning improvement measures for the coming year. | 2013 Imagine Schools Annual Report 40 Learning Gains: Learning Gains are calculated by comparing the Fall scores to the Spring test scores in each subject. When a student remains at the same relative position in relationship to his/her peers, that means that the student has made “normal” growth over the school year. This represents a learning gain of 1.0. Students who move upward in relationship to their peers will have a learning gain greater than 1.0 and can be said to have made greater than expected gain. Technical Note: Learning gains are computed using Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) scores as the percentile rank (PR) is not linear. Learning gains are computed for each subject/student by subtracting the Fall NCE (beginning of the year) score from the Spring NCE score (end of the year), dividing by 100 and adding 1. This results in a score that has an expected value of 1.0 for an average student at an average school. These learning gain scores are then summarized by the appropriate variables (such as school). The Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) was developed to resolve the dilemma that the Percentile Rank (PR) is not linear and thus cannot be used in any statistical summaries. The NCE score, like the PR, has a mean of 50 with a maximum value of 99 and a minimum value of 1. The NCE, unlike the PR, is a linear scale and can be used in statistical summaries. Demographic Data and Enrollment. Demographic data are reported by the schools as part of the Imagine Assessment Program. The demographic data presented in this report are accurate as of the Spring (end of year) assessment. ** Relationship Between School Culture and Learning Gains Imagine Schools has two primary data collection programs that are intended to guide school improvement efforts. These data are aimed at measuring the academic progress that students are making (the SAT10 assessment program) and the culture at each school (the student, family, and staff surveys). This study, conducted by Biscayne Research Group, Inc., is intended to analyze the relationship between these two distinct measures and to make recommendations regarding school improvement efforts. Technical Note: The correlation coefficient measures the strength of the relationship between two variables. The absolute value of the coefficient represents the strength of the relationship (0 means no relationship and 1.0 indicates a perfect relationship). The sign of the coefficient indicates the direction (a positive relationship between x and y means that as x increases, y also increases). The proportion of the variation in one variable that can be explained by the variation in the other variable is determined by the square of the correlation coefficient. ***Trends In Learning Gains A longitudinal database was built by Biscayne Research Group, Inc., containing the assessment results for all eight of the assessment cycles from Fall 2009 through Spring 2013. This study was based on students that had valid scores for all eight of these testing cycles. This resulted in a set of students that have been in Imagine Schools for four consecutive years and have never missed a SAT-10 administration. There were a total of 3607 students that had valid scores in Math for all eight test administrations. The progression of mean test scores in Mathematics shows significant growth during the academic year (Fall to Spring) followed by a decline during the summer break (Spring to Fall). The average change during the academic year for these four years is approximately 6.7 NCE points and the average change over the summer is approximately -5.0 NCE points, resulting in a mean annual gain of 1.7 points. The mean total growth over this four-year period in Math is 12 NCE points. There were a total of 3042 students that had valid scores in Reading for all eight test administrations. The progression of mean test scores in Reading shows a little growth during the academic year (Fall to Spring) followed by small changes during the summer break (Spring to Fall). The average change during the academic year for these four years is approximately 0.9 NCE points and the average change over the summer is approximately 0.6 NCE points, resulting in a mean annual gain of 1.5 points. The mean total growth over this fouryear period in Reading is 6.7 NCE points. Figure 1: Learning Gains vs. Survey Results A data file was built that contains, for each 1.100 Imagine School, the mean response for each of the attitudinal questions on the student, family, 1.0750 and staff survey and the mean reading, math, and average learning gain. The mean response 1.0500 of the three surveys was calculated to provide an overall survey mean1 (the average of the student, 1.025 family and staff survey means). Figure 1 displays the relationship between the overall survey mean (a measure of school culture) and the average learning gain. There exists a significant, positive relationship between school culture and student academic progress. Approximately 25% of the variation in learning gain between schools can be explained by this measure of school culture. Due to the limited range of both variables, this represents an underestimate of the true relationship. 1.000 Average Learning Gain Appendix 0.975 0.950 3.94.04.14.24.34.44.54.6 4.7 Survey Mean Inspıred Vision The Imagine Schools Network The Imagine Schools network of schools currently includes schools operated by two affiliated organizations: Imagine Schools Non-Profit, Inc. and Imagine Schools, Inc. Both Imagine Schools Non-Profit and Imagine Schools serve the exclusive purpose of educating children in grades Pre K-12. Our goal is to transition the entire Imagine Schools network to non-profit status. To that end, the organizations plan for Imagine Schools Non-Profit, Inc., a federally approved 501(c)(3) organization, to acquire ownership of Imagine Schools, Inc. after which Imagine Schools, Inc. will be converted to a nonprofit corporation. Together in partnership with parents, guardians, boards, and communities, Imagine provides students a high quality education that will prepare them for success in school, college, career, and life.
