Comprehensive Education
and Training Solutions
Deck (Navigation)
Our MCA-approved training programmes for captains (masters), deck officers and
deck ratings are job-specific and allow students to build professionalism, earning
potential and capability to progress quickly in their careers. All of our deck courses
are designed to equip professional seafarers and officers with the necessary skills
to command and operate ships, including modern navigational techniques and
legal and technical requirements.
Engineering and Electro-Technical
All of our engineering courses are designed to equip professional seafarers and
officers with the necessary skills to operate the technologically advanced and
high-specification control systems, plant and machinery found on today’s modern
vessels. Our MCA-approved training programmes for chief engineers, engineering
and electro-technical officers and ratings are job-specific, allowing students
to advance their professionalism.
Bridge Systems and Simulation
An impressive range of dedicated state-of-the-art bridge simulation and ECDIS
training facilities is ably supported by highly experienced lecturing staff who have
many years of operational ship handling experience, as well as their teaching and
assessor qualifications.

www.warsashacademy.co.uk
Engine Room Systems and Simulation
After producing the world’s first engine room simulator 30 years ago, we continue
to bring realism into this highly specialist training area, enabling candidates
to develop their technical engineering skills and their non-technical human
element, leadership and management skills. The first of its kind in the world,
our Full Mission Engine Room Simulator opened in October 2012 and integrates
simulator technology with real vessel control and electrical systems, introducing
a real emergency switchboard room and High Voltage (11KVA) room containing
an HV breaker.
Liquid Cargo Operations Simulator (LICOS)
Our LICOS courses meet the requirements of STCW at both operational and
management levels. Cargo operations are conducted in real time, improving the
authenticity of the simulation, and are broken down to cover the most critical parts,
such as loading and the topping off of cargo tanks. In 2006, we became the first UK
organisation approved by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for the delivery and assessment
of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) courses.
Petrochemical/Tanker
Petrochemical training at WMA includes an extensive range of courses designed
to meet the safety needs of the industry and to provide mandatory tanker
endorsements. They all meet approvals from the MCA and other industry bodies,
and/or accreditations are held as appropriate. Specialised tanker training in
petroleum, chemical and liquefied gas tanker operations is covered, as is further
tanker safety and familiarisation training.
Ship Handling Centre
As the only centre of its kind in the UK, our fleet of nine scaled ship models
replicates 12 vessel types and provides port authorities and shipping companies
with invaluable specialised training and assessment for their pilots, captains and
senior deck officers. This dedicated ship handling facility attracts mariners from
across the globe, to practise and develop their ship handling skills through trial
manoeuvres in a controlled environment.
STCW, Safety and Security
All new entrants to seagoing professions require the relevant STCW courses.
Thereafter captains, officers, and crew must all complete ongoing and differing
levels of MCA/STCW training. WMA offers the full range of fire fighting, maritime
safety, medical, navigation and radio communications, safety, and security
management short courses. Courses are run by our expert staff, who come from
a variety of commercial maritime, naval or offshore industry backgrounds, with
relevant experience to support course delivery.
Offshore and Renewables
The offshore and renewables sectors are fast-developing and highly innovative
industries. Developments in oil and gas exploration, and advances in technology
and knowledge, have had a significant impact on the marine qualifications
required, especially for employers of wind farm service and transfer vessels. WMA
remains at the forefront of this trend, offering courses approved to UK industry
standards (OPITO, RenewableUK, GWO), with additional training elements
included as necessary to meet European regulatory requirements.
Leadership and Management
The human element and team performance is increasingly recognised as being
fundamental to safe and efficient vessel operations. In addition to the Academy’s
extensive research into the field of maritime human factors, we are best placed
to deliver essential non-technical skills known as ‘resource management’. Our
suite of courses aims to hone these skills progressively, recognising that such
expertise is universally applicable both at sea and ashore, and is part of the
lifelong learning of any seafarer.
Professional Development
Meeting the high standards expected by owners, employers and maritime
regulators requires continued professional development by individuals and ships’
crews. Our courses address the challenges of working in multicultural
environments, with a focus on leadership and teamwork, communication,
optimising workload capability, problem analysis and solution delivery, risk-aware
decision-making and crisis management.
Hotel Operations
WMA is creating a series of quality training programmes which offer a clear
pathway for progression for both newcomers and experienced hotel operations
personnel who are looking to advance their careers aboard cruise ships, ferries and
superyachts. Students will be provided with the necessary skills and competencies
for their industry sector, adapted specifically for marine hospitality environments.

Working for You,
with You
A key element of our provision is tailoring specific training programmes
and business services according to customers’ requirements. Shipping
clients such as Chevron, Shell, Exxon, Lloyds Register and Carnival all make
practical use of our expertise in a number of ways, including:
Customised Simulation
Over the past 40 years, WMA has gained extensive experience of bridge and engine
simulator operations and we deliver high-quality and customised training services.
After consultation with clients, crew resource management training can be designed
to meet individual requirements. For example, mixed groups of deck and engineering
officers can develop their non-technical skills in order to enhance the operational
safety and efficiency of their company vessels.
Accident Investigations
Our state-of-the-art bridge simulator is used for accident investigations, and
onboard safety audits are conducted for P&I clubs and ship owners. Members of our
lecturing staff are called upon as expert witnesses, and assessments of competence
are carried out on the Full Mission Engine Room Simulator.
Human Element Competence
WMA can create a dynamic Human Element Competence Assurance System
(HECAS) training package, enabling companies to audit personnel and to observe,
articulate and facilitate best practice in bridge team resource management.
This training will underpin a client’s safety management systems.
Research and Consultancy
The Maritime Research Centre provides specialist research and consultancy services
to the maritime industry, applying knowledge and skills from our core business.
Project Horizon was an EU-based project investigating concerns over human safety,
environmental damage and commercial loss due to watch officer fatigue. A recent
Port Development Project examined the operational aspects of changes in a port.
Project BEEMS (Building European Environmental and Maritime Skills) is an EUfunded project aimed at stimulating the development and sustained growth of
environmental and maritime skills within the marine renewable energy industry.
Operational Competence Assessment
Utilising our liquid cargo simulator, we are able to provide gas tanker clients with
an assessment environment for SIGTTO standards and to tailor their own
competence assessments for officers who are managing liquid cargo operations.
Vessel Services
Our well-established and robust educational and delivery infrastructure draws upon
the expertise and resources of our reputable partner organisations. By linking with
a distinctive group of established and high-quality service providers, WMA can tailor
a wide range of vessel services to support the maritime sector.
Please visit the ‘Vessel Services’ section of our website for more detailed information
about the following business services we offer.
• Onboard Training
