INITIATIVES
The employment unit engaged in the following broad outreach initiatives in accordance with
various elements of FCC Rule 73.2080(c)(2):
Participated in a job fair by station
personnel who have substantial
responsibility in making hiring
decisions.
Business Manager, Digital Manager, Director of
Sales and General Manager of Sales participated
in the Job Fair 2015 at Tidewater Community
College on April 9, 2015 from 10AM to 2PM
Established an internship program
designed to assist members of the
community to acquire skills needed for
broadcast employment.
(1) One student from Longwood University
participated in our summer internship
program. This student did a rotation through
all departments of the station including,
Digital, Production, Promotions, Sales,
Programming and Business for the first 8
weeks. The last 2 weeks, the student was able
to select the department she wanted to gain
more experience in. By rotating through the
departments, the student was able to learn
about the main duties and responsibilities of
each department and determine what
interested her most. The last 2 weeks, she
chose to spend in the Production department.
(2) One student from Old Dominion University
participated in our spring internship program.

This student rotated through Promotions,
Programming and our Production
departments. While in promotions, she
assisted at station events and interacted with
listeners. In Programming, she learned what
goes in to preparing for a show. In Production,
she received hands on training of studio
production equipment and learned the process
of producing a commercial.
Participated in job banks, internet
programs, and other programs
designed to promote outreach
generally (i.e., that are not primarily
directed to providing notification of
specific job vacancies).
The licensee actively engages the audience
through social media such as Facebook and
Twitter. See, for example, Facebook pages for
97.3 The Eagle, 92.9 The Wave, Hot 100.5, and
94.1 ESPN.
Established training programs
designed to enable station personnel to
acquire skills that could qualify them
for higher level positions.
(1) Director of Marketing and Promotions was
nominated and selected as one of 15 possible
participants for The Virginia Association of
Broadcasters Best of the Best Leadership
Program for 2014. This is an 8 month
program which started in Nov 2013 and ended
in Jun 2014.
(2) A student attending Old Dominion University
was hired on September 9, 2013 as a part-time
Board Operator working approximately 15
hours a week. He was mentored and trained
by our ESPN programming team for 18
months. In February 2015, an opening for a
full-time Sports Producer became available.
He was one of 7 applicants interviewed, 3 of
which were internal candidates, and he was
selected for the position. In his current role, he
continues to receive further mentoring and
training from the ESPN programming team.
Participated in events or programs
sponsored by educational institutions
relating to career opportunities in
broadcasting.
(1) General Manager and Digital Manager
participated in Old Dominion University
Student Athlete Career Fair on March 24,
2015 from 7PM until 9PM.
(2) Director of Programing and Operations was a
Guest Speaker/Mentor at the Confer Radio
Institute at Bloomsburg University in PA for 2
days, in July 2014.

(3) Provided station tours to members and parents
of the following groups:
 Tiger Cubs on Jan 20, 2015 at 6:30PM to
16 members/parents
 Cub Scouts on Apr 16, 2015 at 5:00PM to
12 members/parents
 Boy Scouts of America on May 14, 2015 at
6:30PM to 10 members/parents
Participated in other activities
designed by the station employment
unit reasonably calculated to further
the goal of disseminating information
as to employment opportunities in
broadcasting to job candidates who
might otherwise be unaware of such
opportunities.
(1) The stations participate in almost every local
fair and 100’s of events throughout the year.
They also set up 100’s of remote broadcasts at
different locations. Members of the
community stop by the station booths, and
staff is available to answer questions about
careers in broadcasting and/or job
opportunities.
(2) The licensee posted on the Facebook pages
for 5 of its stations to recruit for part-time
road crew to help with station events.
Approximately 10 individuals responded and
attended a group interview session on April
27, 2015. The Promotions director and his
staff gave an overview of the broadcasting
industry and then more specifically discussed
the promotions position in detail. All who
were in attendance had the opportunity to
introduce themselves and ask questions. One
candidate was selected for a second interview
and hired on April 30, 2015.
