It grew out of a modest, one-color brochure called SMHArts, which listed the Museum’s exhibitions and public programs. Sure, it was informative and useful, but it was a humble point of contact between the Museum and our community. Then, through a gradual process of increasing design sophistication and content development, Studio magazine took shape, and became a place for us to rethink our engagement with our visitors and the world at large. Today, StudioWaO\Sd]ZdW\U`SQ]`R]TbVSaWU\WÆQO\be]`YPSW\UQ`SObSRPgO`bists of African descent, as well as a documentation of the ever-changing Harlem landscape. With contributions from leading and emerging scholars, artists and writers, Studio monitors and reports the pulse of contemporary black art and culture. This publication is a rare glimpse into the complexities of the practices and creations of many artists working today. By nurturing another space to support the work of artists—beyond our gallery walls—Studio expands the Museum’s mission and offers unparalleled insight into the world of artistic endeavor and history. Through this magazine, we seek to include everyone in the conversation on contemporary black art, extend our critical reach and help establish a new role for art in society. With this issue—the design issue—we continue our grand experiment: a merger of design, art, scholarship and community. The graphic design is new, and we still offer compelling looks at the artists who shape and examine our everyday lives. These pages communicate the temper of the moment and reinforce the immediacy and relevance of art—past, present and future. Wheadon, Curatorial Assistant The Map Office, a New York-based multidisciplinary design studio, specializes in brand, web and print design. As a small yet internationally renowned design group, the Map has forged both commercial and creative relationships, with clients such as Banana Republic, American Express, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Studio Museum in Harlem. In describing the mission of The Map Office, founder and creative director Eddie Opara asserts, “Our process is to translate our clients’ needs into dynamic visual systems that can be presented at any scale. It is our goal to create seamless, natural experiences where any surface is a potential display and any gesture, a potential command.” With investments in the commercial, institutional and research facets of the design process, the studio has pioneered a unique approach centered around educating clients on the fundamentals of visual communication. As head designers to The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Map Office designs the Museum’s seasonal catalogue, Studio, and Opara established the Museum’s visual identity while working at 2x4, New York. The first Map Office-designed Museum exhibition catalogue was Energy/Experimentation, in which Opara premiered typeface designer Joshua Darden’s typeface Freight. Other projects include Sophie, a design resource for young women seeking to expand their knowledge of design, nutrition, beauty and fashion. More recently, The Map Office has been designing a new website for The Kitchen, a nonprofit experimental performance space in New York. The site will launch later this year, and highlight Map’s integration of research and design, from concept to completion. In the near future, The Map Office will venture in new directions, collaborating with a New York University film student to provide graphic support for a short documentary about kites and possibly opening an office in Los Angeles. Eddie Opara and cofounder George Plesko earned their MFAs in graphic design from Yale University and founded The Map Office in 2005. As creative director, Opara’s projects include designing and developing large-scale graphics installations, innovative software, web interfaces and graphics for clients such as Disney Imagineering, Graphis, Surface and Elle. How do you translate client needs into visual systems and vice versa? JD We synthesize a client’s aesthetic needs and functional requirements with what we believe to be true about readability, aided by an awareness of how we and other designers have addressed similar questions in the past. We then assemble up to a dozen different ideas, relevant historical samples, contemporary graphic ideas and fragments from our pile of speculative projects, all of which may engender a new design, which comes with plenty of documentation and ongoing support. NW What iconic projects, past and future, are most emblematic of your studio’s mission? JD I’m particularly pleased with a project we completed this spring for the redesign of the Asian Tatler[OUOhW\Sa7beOabVSÆ`abbW[SeS^`]dWRSR]\SVc\R`SR^S`QS\b of the typefaces for a publication, approximately a third of which were new designs created expressly for Tatler’s use. Darden, arguably the pioneering independent font designer of African-American descent, was born in 1979 in Northridge, CA, and never received formal training in typeface design. Darden founded the Joshua Darden Studio in 2004 and currently teaches typography at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. Ð Studio / Summer 2007 8]aVcO2O`RS\¼AbcRW]½8]aVcO2O`RS\AbcRW]eeeX]aVcORO`RS\Q][ 1 35 The Joshua Darden Studio is a premier typeface design studio with an innovative approach to production that highlights the key intersections of art and industry. In recognizing the ever-changing needs of readers in a digital age, the Joshua Darden Studio employs market research and experimentation to forge a new design paradigm in which function and expression coalesce into fresh typefaces that have a “solid raison d’être, free of post-rationalization or an unnecessarily romantic view of historical norms.”1 Innovators such as Darden drive rather than follow commercial trends and remain at the forefront of constantly evolving creative markets by fabricating custom, distinct typographical aesthetics that serve the design needs of clients such as The New York Times Magazine and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Nico Wheadon For those of us in the dark, could you explain what typography is and the ways by which it is considered an artistic process or practice? Joshua Darden Typography is the design of the look and feel of text. For most of its history, it has been associated with publishing and advertising. Before the 1880s, the process of typeface design was physical and involved the actual sculpting of shapes into steel with sharp handheld tools. I am a typeface designer, which means I draw the alphabet, numerals, basic punctuation and at least two hundred other symbols comprising a custom typeface, and then create a software program that is installable on a user’s computer. Because typography is a means of communication, typeface designers also tend to be interested in language and legibility and try to understand the cultural connotations of different lettering styles. 01/ Part Occasional Tables 2007 B&B Italia Courtesy Stephen Burks 02/ Stephen Burks Photo: Danny Bright 01 >`]ÆZS >`]QSaaW\UAbS^VS\0c`Ya by Nicole Sealey Industrial designer Stephen Burks, who has developed concepts for Calvin Klein, Estée Lauder, Herman Miller, Swatch and others, has nothing to hide. His newest endeavor, the Handmade collection, enthusiastically (and quite literally) puts the design “process” on view for the world to see. The indoor/outdoor paper furniture series speaks to the idea of process as art. While some artists host restricted open studio visits, Burks’s Tribeca suite is the ultimate open house. It serves as both studio O\RUOZZS`ga^OQSSf^]aW\UbVS[ObS`WOZaPS\SObVbVSPSOcbgO\RbVSPSOcbWÆQObW]\ of the materials. When describing the exhibition’s assembly, Burks loosely compares it to the making of paper airplanes. Unlike most paper planes, though, this furniture is intricately crafted 02 and requires more than paper to create. Using an intense melding process, he comPW\Sa^ObbS`\SR^O^S`aVSSbaQ]Z]`SRT]O[V]bUZcSO\Re]dS\ÆPS`UZOaab]T]`[ functional tables, chairs and stools. “My work deals with the appropriate relationship of things; the space between the narrative, materials, the object and the activity,” Burks says. This latest collection is a guided tour of Burks’s composite world of operation, modernity and multidimensionality. It’s all about process, research and development. Architecture buffs survey end products, completed works. Construction is isolated from the public. Not in Handmade. Burks wants audiences to experience the complete undertaking, from conception to completion. Hence, the work and the work-in-progress are equally valid and necessary parts of the collection. Handmade was unveiled, in collaboration with 23 Suite Studio, during the 2007 New York International Contemporary Furniture Fair. These programs offer students opportunities to meet and converse with prominent visual artists, express their ideas through discussions, facilitate tours and hands-on workshops and develop important communication and critical thinking skills. Nations, cities and even neighborhoods are all, to some extent, “imagined communities.” The idea that we are connected to each other overrides the logistic impossibility of actually knowing everyone who makes up these various public forms. Despite the fact that we can’t really and truly know everyone who shares our national, [c\WQW^OZO\RZ]QOZWRS\bWÆQObW]\aeSOaac[S[S[bership in a mutually recognizable public sphere. It’s no secret that we don’t do all of our living in private. An equal share of our lived experience takes place in public. While we are well aware of our roles in domestic life, we are perhaps less conscious of our implicit involvement in the making of public life. We activate public space, such as gardens and parks, the minute we use them. We stimulate public buildings the second that we enter them. We encourage public institutions by supporting them. Creating public programs, much like creating public buildings and spaces, requires, above all else, the recognition of a public. Not unlike architect David Adjaye and artist Bodys Isek Kingelez, who envision real or idealized public environments, the Education and Public Programs Department at the Studio Museum engages with a public that is at once real and imagined. Public lectures, such as The Artist’s Voice series; public readings, such as the Books & Authors programs; concerts, such as the annual JVC Jazz Festival; conferences, such as Here & Now: The Second African-American Art Conference, co-hosted with New York University and the W.E.B. DuBois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University; tours for seniors; and school-based initiatives, such as Expanding the Walls, reveal our ongoing commitment to a public that we cherish, respect and empower.Ð Youth Programs are supported by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation; MetLife Foundation; Time Warner Inc.; Citigroup Foundation; the Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Trust; New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency; Bank of America; and the Eathon Hall Memorial Fund.
