Helvi Sandvik, NANA Development Corporation President chairs and participates in bi-annual
“COO Meetings,” which evaluates safety and occupational health performance of the NANA
Development Corporation’s subsidiaries.
Sandvik elevated safety performance criteria within NANA Development Corporation and across
the company’s subsidiaries through the implementation of HSE Balanced Scorecards based on
the findings of employee safety perception surveys.
Sandvik personally awards NANA’s highest award – the Hunter Award - for Safety & Health
Excellence
Sandvik has taken on a personal drive to reduce off-the-job injuries at NANA, distributing more
than 3,000 life preservers to NANA employees, family members, and shareholders – and
encouraging all residents in the State of Alaska to always wear their life preserver while boating.
Sandvik pushed the off-the-job injury reduction plan further with quarterly mailings to all
employees of the National Safety Council’s “Family Safety & Health.”
Sandvik and the NANA Development Corporation Board of Directors have mandated a sevenyear employee safety perception survey campaign.
Sandvik’s top management priority in HSE has been the implementation of a Safety
Management System – NSC Navigator – which goes “live” on October 1, 2014.
Sandvik and Teck Resources have agreed to co-produce Teck’s award winning “Courageous
Safety Leadership” for all NANA supervisors and managers.
Sandvik has asked all subsidiaries to submit a minimum of one location for OSHA VPP
certification, with the goal of three locations per subsidiary certified by 2017.
Sandvik has supported and encouraged NANA’s drive for OSHAS 18001 certification.
Sandvik mandated that all companies participate in the NANA Enterprise Safety Council, which is
made up of over 40 HSE professionals across the company.
Sandvik instituted an annual “in person” corporate safety conference, with quarterly “virtual”
meetings.
Safety & Health Metrics Stabilization or Plateau Trend:


The Five Foci Blended Strategies below are currently in place to drive improvement in
occupational health and safety metrics and are evaluated formally and revised accordingly on an
annual basis:
o Employee Knowledge and Leadership Skills
o Process Safety (a systems approach vs. Process Safety Management)
o Behavior Based Safety
o Contractor Safety Management
o Internal Assessment Capability
NANA Development Corporation has become more focused on leading indicators as near
misses, behavioral observations and hazard recognition vs. lagging indicators represented by
standard metrics as recordables. NANA’s new metrics are aligned with our ISO 9001 and 14001
1
continuous improvement cycles, and include ‘employee challenges’ to identify legacy processes
or equipment representing safety risks or hazards. Employees are measured by reporting of
‘positive safety observations’ onsite and in off the job environments on a continuous and
purposefully randomized basis. We anticipate that NSC Navigator will take the reporting of this
to the next level with device-based observations and recordings.
Subordination of Occupational Health and Safety Leadership within Operations and Compliance:




Sandvik’s #2 Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (David Marquez) has
oversight for the Vice President – HSEQ & EPM (Robert Bulger), and elevates it’s criticality to
company performance and shared values on a continuous basis with the president.
In addition, Sandvik appointed a Senior Vice President & Chief Compliance Officer (Kevin
Thomas) to oversee all compliance and regulations across the NANA Family of Companies. The
Vice President – HSEQ & EPM works in concert the Chief Compliance Officer to ensure that all
health, safety, and environmental program are in compliance with federal, state, and local
jurisdictions – as well as those on foreign soil.
The Chief Compliance Officer audits the HSE department and reports his findings to the
president.
NANA has implemented ISNetworld as an internal compliance tool for all subsidiaries
