Chairman and CEO of Cooper Industries worldwide, Kirk Hachigian joined Cooper in 2005 and set about driving the company towards emerging markets and increasing its high-tech efforts. In 2006, 34 percent of Cooper’s revenue originated from outside of the United States, up from 26.5 percent six years earlier. One of Hachigian’s goals is for revenue to be evenly split between the United States and the rest of the world within five years. “We’re not obsessed with global, it’s just the natural growth,” he said. In addition to becoming more of an international business, Cooper is able to shelter itself from the economic downturn in the US by diversifying its customer base. The company now sells more products to industrial and utility markets and less to residential and commercial markets, which tend to be more cyclical. Whilst moving away from a residential customer base has proven successful to date, the prediction is that growth in the international construction sector will slow. Cooper appears to have foreseen this change with its acquisition of Cannon Technologies in 2006, the company’s first software buy. It’s this kind of vision that has kept Cooper relevant since 1833. As Hachigian states: “The future is going to be communications, system automation, integration and safety. Your kids won’t know what an incandescent bulb is.” Adapted from ‘A brighter, broader path’ by Brad Hem, Houston Chronicle, 12 September 2008. Marketing Update Checkered flag for promo During 2008 Cooper held its biggest ever promotion, the Crescent Racing Win a V8 promotion. Leveraging our sponsorship of the Team Vodafone V8 Supercar team, the promotion operated from August through to mid October. The promotion was advertised through catalogues, in-store posters, advertisements in motor racing magazines, promotional activities and merchandising at the racetrack during V8 Supercar race days. During the promo we shipped out 500 instant win prizes, including mousemats, signed caps, posters and key ring tape measures. The framed and signed racing shirt prizes received an overwhelmingly positive response from winners. And the winner is… The V8 goes to Jenny Stimmler from Queensland Best in-store display Jimboomba Mitre 10 was voted the best in-store display for the Win a V8 promotion. Congratulations to Steve and the team for their hard work in putting together an impressive display. As a part of the Win a V8 promotion four lucky distributors won a trip for two to Bathurst. They got to spend the weekend with the Cooper marketing and sales team and meet the 888 team drivers, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup. This proved to be a great weekend, particularly given the results, with Jamie and Craig winning Bathurst for the 3rd time. Thanks guys! The major prize, a Ford Falcon V8 personally presented by Craig Lowndes, went to Jenny Stimmler from Queensland, who bought her dad a Crescent Rapid Wrench for Father’s Day and entered via the website. Jenny is a Craig Lowndes fan so this is going to be a big day for her with a double dose of excitement. Cooper would like to thank all of its distributors and customers who suported this promotion and made it a great success. Bathurst VIP weekend Craig Lowndes takes time out from driving at Bathurst to meet the Cooper team and VIP weekend winners. Many thanks to the drivers of 888 Racing for joining us at several trade show events this year. Here Jamie Whincup signs posters at the Bunnings Spring launch in Brisbane. The Cooper Tools products display at Bathurst. 5 Marketing Update Fourth quarter promotions Time is running out to take advantage of our fourth quarter promotions. Certification secured With IECEx international certification, Cooper Crouse-Hinds Australia can now access products from Cooper facilities around the globe. One recent addition is the Ex-cell range of stainless steel terminal enclosures designed by Cooper Sheerness in the UK. Obtaining the IECEx certificate is but the first step in being able to sell the product in Australia. Serving our customers efficiently and maintaining the stringent Cooper international QA standard are priorities. Ken Saunders, Quality Manager from Sheerness UK, and Mark Croft, Manager of Engineering Services from Cooper Shanghai, were entrusted with the task to accredit Cooper Industries Australia as the local product assembly center. The accreditation was done in two sessions. Ken did the checks on our Quality System to make sure that we tie in with their system in terms of monitoring the quality of local assembly and traceability of products internationally. Mark trained us from quotation to final assembly and quality control. We had participation from all levels in sales, engineering, manufacturing and QA to make this a resounding success! The Smithfield site is now certified for production of Ex-cell stainless steel terminal enclosures as an extended site to Cooper Sheerness, UK under IECEx certification. Smithfield ISO 9000 certification is now extended by adding the Design element. Danny Diep, Kym Stephenson, Ram Sridhar were the team members achieving certification. 8 CEAG lights up Shell Oil and gas giant Shell UK has completed an extensive lighting upgrade across twelve of its North Sea oil platforms, which involved the installation of several thousand Ceag explosion-proof fluorescent lighting units, all supplied by Cooper Crouse-Hinds Eberbach in Germany. Shell’s lighting system of choice was Cooper Crouse-Hinds’ CEAG eLLK 92 range and the units were installed in both indoor and outdoor locations. Quality and reliability were key factors for Shell choosing these units. Since 2005 in excess of 10,000 light fittings were supplied and only two or three had technical faults. The eLLK 92 range of fluorescent lighting units are available for IECEx and ATEX Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22, hazardous areas. As well as lighting units, Cooper Crouse-Hinds provides a comprehensive range of other explosion-protected electrical equipment. For more information, please contact Cooper CrouseHinds (02) 8787 2773. Cooper Power Systems Energy efficient technologies reduce carbon emissions The media continually remind us of the need to make changes in our lifestyles to combat the impacts of global warming. Whilst we are asked to switch off unnecessary appliances to reduce our carbon footprint, the most significant challenges we face are in addressing larger-scale impacts, such as electricity generation. Electric power generation is a large contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. So how does a power company make changes that will benefit the environment? Cooper Power Systems and the Evolution surge arrester bring a clever solution to a global problem. By replacing a key part of every energy transmission system, the humble surge arrester, utility companies can achieve more than just greater energy efficiency. Reliable service, environmental leadership, financial returns for shareholders and value creation for customers are just some of the benefits. Surge arresters are a low-cost, often commoditised asset, which have historically been purchased to protect distribution equipment from overvoltages. They offered very little in the way of additional benefits. But when Cooper Power Systems introduced the UltraSIL Evolution, a distribution-class surge arrester, they were able to show that the humble surge arrester could offer additional benefits, including: • • • • Measurably improved energy efficiencies Reduction of carbon emissions Boost to asset utilization Improvement in system reliability Energy savings can be demonstrated when we look at how a common 10kV surge arrester can generate up to 500mW of power loss. One arrester energized 24 hours/day results in measurable inefficiencies on an annual basis: successfully supplying distribution and station class arresters for many years. Our silicon rubber housing performs particularly well in the high ultraviolet radiation environment found in this part of the world. For further information on the new Evolution surge arrester please contact Andrew Leung on (02) 8787 2787. Adapted from ‘Demand Response: A good thing for everybody’, Phil Holt 2008, The Line (August edition). Power Systems For a utility company with one million arresters on their system, this represents 4,380,000kWh of unbilled energy, generating 3,408 metric tons of CO2 emissions. The way forward for utilities is to modernise the electric grid through new technologies that help reduce these inefficiencies. The Evolution surge arrester is a small, costeffective, energy efficient technology that delivers huge savings for the planet. Cooper Electrical Australia has been The Evolution revolution, from Cooper Power Systems 9 Cooper Safety Berlin’s Reichstag Let there be light Major commercial projects require special emergency lighting systems in case of emergency, disaster or power failure. Cooper Safety’s CEAG ZB-S Central Battery System is installed in venues such as World Cup and Olympic stadiums. In these vast public places with large crowds in attendance it’s critical to have sufficient light to evacuate people in case of an emergency. During stadium construction for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, after a comparison among many emergency lighting systems, the Athens Olympic Organizing Committee chose Cooper’s CEAG ZB-S Central Battery System, which is said to be the most advanced in the world. This same system was adopted in several newly-built or reconstructed stadiums and gymnasiums including: Athens Olympic Stadium, Karaiskaki Stadium, Patra Stadium, Olympic Hockey Center and the canoeing venue. In the summer of 2006, the FIFA World Cup took place in Germany. As a globally important event of similar influence to the Olympics, the organising committee’s goal was to host a high-tech and safe event. Many of the 12 German stadiums, including Allianz Arena, installed the same Cooper Emergency Lighting System as used in the Athens Olympics. 10 The Cooper CEAG ZB-S system has also proved very popular in settings away from sports venues. It’s installed at the Reichstag in Berlin, the Burj AI Arab hotel in Dubai, and the highest building in the world, Dubai Tower. Cooper also tailored a CEAG ZB-S system for China’s National Aquatics Center for the recent 2008 Olympics & Summer Paralympics in Beijing. The system worked in harmony with the hosting city’s three key concepts of a ‘green, hi-tech and people’s Olympics’. Closer to home, 2007 saw the successful launch of the CEAG ZB-S system in Australia and New Zealand. The New South Wales Department of Commerce recently chose the system for a major refurbishment of the historic Sydney Town Hall. The unique architecture, heritage restraints, variety of events held and volume of people attending presented the project engineers with a multitude of challenges. One of the major challenges was the emergency lighting, which required the emergency lighting system to be incorporated into the existing heritage light fixtures, whilst complying with the Building Code of Australia (AS2293 – 2005) and the National Building and Services Reference Specification. The solution was the CEAG ZB-S. Other selling points the project engineers identified include: • A highly intelligent, central battery- control system that can conduct swift monitoring on various settings (such as the voltage). • Electric current and the temperature of the battery. • Intelligent management on the floating charge. • Micro-electrical discharge of the battery. • Service volume and left checks, which can greatly improve its service life. • Under normal operation, the battery is easily-maintained, free from pollution and gas discharge and boasts a 10-year- plus service life.
