Special notes
1 This unit standard can be used to assess outcomes of a learning programme based on achievement objectives from Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum,
Ministry of Education (Wellington: Learning Media, 1992):
Number (Exploring computation and estimation), Level 4, page 44
– make sensible estimates and check the reasonableness of answers;
– explain satisfactory algorithms for addition, subtraction, and multiplication; from ā ngarau, Ministry of Education (Wellington: Learning
Media, 1994), Tau, Taumata 6.
2 Calculators must not be used in achievement of credit for this unit standard.
3 To achieve credit the candidate must use at least three different numeracy strategies to solve a range of problems. Numeracy strategies may include but are not limited to
– doubling, compensation, part-whole, cancelling common factors.

4 Problems used to assess numeracy strategies will involve no more than one step in their solution.
5 The skills of this unit standard are some of those that could be used to collect assessment information for Unit 5233, Use mathematical processes and skills in a variety of contexts .
Element 1
Use numeracy strategies to solve problems involving whole numbers.
Performance criteria
1.1 Strategies that enable the problems to be solved are described or shown.
1.2 Correct solutions to the problems are found.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
