to board manufacture
The company, established in 1898, was the first in the
world to manufacture sheet materials, the forerunner of all
other homogenous and composite boards such as MDF,
chipboard and OSB. Old newspapers are pulped in the
24 hour production facility that produces in excess of 0.3
million boards per annum. That’s the equivalent of
processing approx 110 million newspapers or 4000 tons
of post consumer waste each year. As each ton
represents 3 cubic metres in volume that equates to a
saving of nearly 1200 cubic metres of landfill a year!
Sundeala ‘ K’ – Uniquely eco-nomical!
Sundeala boards are supplied with a sanded pre-finished
‘nap’, so no fabric covering is required. The standard
Sundeala ‘K’ Quality has a natural light grey colour and
can be supplied square or bevelled edge. To extend the
selection ‘K’ Colourboard is also available offering eight
contrasting colours of Red, Orange, Blue, Green,
Charcoal, Wheat, Lilac and Yellow. All boards offer a
25 year warranty.
Fabric covering for versatile use
Utilising Sundeala as a base board, fabrics are added to
offer the greatest possible choice of colour and texture.
Supplied either unframed or with a choice of frame to
provide a classic finish.
Flame retardant with safety in mind!
In areas where fire safety is paramount, Sundeala Flame
Retardant Board (FRB) can be the answer. The product is
thoroughly tested to meet the specific requirements of the
Building Regulations. Rest assured both FRB uncovered
and fabric covered boards align with stringent fire
standards. See pages 8 and 9 for more information.

Selection of frames available from anodised aluminium
in both classic and medi-frame, solid Ash and Beech
together with a choice of four coloured aluminium frames.
Aluminium frames are easily fixed through safety corner
keys with cover caps that conceal the fixing. Boards
1500mm and above have a centre fixing point where
a screw and cup washer are required.
Medi-frame has a smooth, flat finish. It is ideal for use in
areas that require high levels of hygiene. Medi-frame can
be specified in place of “classic” aluminium frame at no
extra cost.
Oak style aluminium frames offer all the advantages of
aluminium along with the luxury of a stylish wood finish.
For an exclusive touch, an executive frame in Ash
accentuates the wooden finish turning the notice board
into a true item of furniture.
Both solid Ash and Beech finish off the choice of wood
frames available. All wood products follow the strict FSC
policy of supply from managed forests.

What’s the flaming difference?
Fabric covered notice boards
It is vital, if a fabric covered flame retardant notice board
is required, that both the base board and the fabric
covering meet the relevant test requirements.
Fire Officers are aware of performance criteria and will
not accept products without a composite fire test
certificate. Sundeala carried out a series of tests under
the new European standards and the results are evident
from the photographs adjacent. It must be noted the
primary source of flame, which is gas generated,
remains constant throughout the duration of the test.
Both tests used an identical flame retardant fabric.
The only difference between the two is the choice of
base board, one utilising Sundeala FRB, and the other
a standard, non flame retardant product.

What the Building Regulations say
Scotland
The fire performance requirement of Building Regulations
Approved Document B – Internal Fire Spread (linings)
is to inhibit the spread of fire within the building. In this
respect the new European Harmonised test standards
BS EN 13823: 2002 and BS EN 11925-2 replace
British Standard BS 476: Parts 6 & 7.
Technical Standards Table 3 (D1.3): Reaction to fire aligns
Class B with Class ‘O’ under the classification of ‘Low’.
Below is the European classification alongside the old
British Standard class, together with their uses within the
Building Regulations.

General
Sundeala FRB board has been tested under the European
Harmonised Standards BS EN 13823: 2002 and BS EN
11925-2 and fully meets the criteria for Class B. Sundeala
FRB may therefore be used in locations that previously
required British Standard and Building Regulation
classifications of Class 1 and Class ‘O’.
As a general guide Class B products should be used in
fire escape routes, corridors, stairways, lobbies, kitchens,
workshops, laboratories etc. If in doubt your local Fire
Officer can advise on their correct use.
Please be aware design principles vary according to
building type and between regulatory bodies. School
design is greatly influenced by Document BB100
“Designing and managing against the risk of fire in
schools” where the use of notice boards with a cover
(our Securi-boards) should be used in non protected

Low gloss projection and dry wipe board
Sundeala low gloss board can be used as a screen with
the latest short or ultra short throw projectors, thus
eliminating the need for expensive interactive white
boards. In addition to providing an ideal surface for
projection, Sundeala low gloss VES Board can also be
used as a dry wipe. This dual purpose facility halves the
cost of supplying both interactive screens and dry wipe
boards and at the same time allows you to maximise the

Duo and Header boards
Duo Boards
Manufactured as a 50/50 board with dry wipe one side
and Sundeala pin boards on the other. Ideal for areas
of limited space where the best of both worlds can be
accommodated. The pin board side can be covered in
a fabric if required. A felt in four colours is offered as
standard, however any fabric style of your choice can
be priced by our sales office.
Bespoke board sizes can also be manufactured along with
variable percentage areas of dry wipe to suit your needs.
Header Boards
Similar to the duo board, a combination of a pin board
with a reduced area of dry wipe either used at the top
or bottom of the panel can be manufactured.
These boards can offer multi-use in areas of restricted
space.

Care of dry wipe boards
 For optimum performance, use solvent-based
dry-erase markers as opposed to water-based
dry-erase markers (also called low odour
markers).
 For initial cleaning, wipe the board with a clean
cloth moistened with a liquid cleanser.
 Then wipe board with wet cloth using clean
water, finally wipe dry with a clean dry cloth.
 If your board is used daily, the cleaning should
be performed at least 2 to 3 times a week.
More thorough cleaning may be required if
writing is left on the board for more than 2 days.

How to condition Sundeala boards
Why condition Sundeala eco boards?
Sundeala Medium Boards are manufactured from recycled
newsprint (cellulose fibre). A feature of this natural material
is its ability to adjust its moisture content to match that of
the environment. Therefore, if the moisture content of the
board is lower than the surrounding air, it will absorb
moisture and slightly increase in size.
By ensuring that the board has a moisture content similar
to its surroundings before fixing, this tendancy is avoided.
Once installed the product is generally in a stable
environment and any such changes should be minimal.
The following guidelines will help you condition your
Sundeala boards to achieve equilibrium of moisture
content before fixing.
Note: Please do not fix Sundeala boards if you consider them to be faulty or
damaged in any way. It is recommended that boards should only be fixed in
buildings that are fully commissioned.
Conditioning with water (unheated buildings)
With a brush or clean mop, rub clean water into the back
of the boards at a rate of at least one litre per 1220 x
2440mm.
Moisture penetration can be greatly
assisted by adding a few drops of
washing up liquid to the water.
Then lay wet side to wet side in
a neat fully supported stack and
allow to stand for 48-72 hours.
Working with Sundeala
 Do unwrap, unstack 48 hours prior to installing
boards.
 Do store boards in the dry on a level base clear
of the ground.
 Do make sure boards are properly conditioned
as recommended.
 Do ensure all substrates or fixing grounds are
level and clean.
 Do use appropriate type of fasteners and cup
washers.
 Do fix boards at recommended centres.
 Do not use adhesives without checking their
suitability.
 Do not force boards together, joints should be
lightly butted.
 Do not use paint types which may adversely
affect the flame resistance of the board.
Cutting
Boards may be cut with a
power or hand saw with
a fine toothed blade.
Moisten boards working from
the centre outwards
Always cut from the face side
Conditioning with air (heated buildings)
Alternatively Sundeala board may be conditioned dry.
Stand boards vertically on their long edges in the room
in which they are to be installed to allow them to reach
a moisture content which is in balance with their
surroundings. Any packaging should be removed to
allow for correct conditioning.
Arrange boards loosely with
separators and stand for a
minimum of 3 days
