Combining their professionalism and vast experience in the local housing and rental market, Nick Berriman and Caroline Eaton regarded developing a unique school guide as a natural stepping stone for keeping home sellers and buyers well informed. “School selection is unquestionably a much major factor when looking for a new home, so understanding and helping our clients needs was a key constituent in the development”. “Following the successful launch last year, the 2016 guide has been improved to embrace state secondary and primary schools in our catchment area that are rated as ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ by their last Ofsted inspections. “We were overwhelmed by the positive response from last year’s circulation of 10,000 copies. The free publication provided the early steps in assisting purchasers and as before, our aim is to provide a guide to access quality education from both the state and independent sector available from the communities we serve. We sincerely hope our new publication will offer some informed and valuable assistance in your quest for your new home”. Nick Berriman & Caroline Eaton, Directors Our Top 10 Guide to buying near your preferred school 1. Plan well ahead and check the waiting list for the appropriate year 2. Don’t rely too much on Ofsted and league tables. Visit a selection of schools and find one that suits your child’s abilities and character 3. Look for areas where there are both good primary and secondary schools 4. Meet the head teachers, make sure the good ones aren’t planning retirement 5. Check catchment area and any other criteria that could assist directly with the school 6. If you are planning for your child to walk to school, check road safety and short cuts 7. Do a dummy run and check for heavy traffic at school times 8. Talk to other parents 9. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket for an area with only one good school - look for an area with a range of good schools 10. Be prepared to pay a premium if near a good state school, but it will be money well invested > Nick Berriman LLB FNAEA MARLA > Caroline Eaton MNAEA MARLA eractive Digital int om to view fr le b a il a v a ages version roperty p p r u o f o each ton.co.uk a e n a im r r www.be 2 Intro.indd 1 16/02/2016 21:33 Berriman Eaton LOCAL Good School Guide INDEX Page 4/5 Page 6 Page 7-16 Page 17 Page 18-19 Page 20-21 Page 22 Page 23-26 Page 27 Page 28 Page 31-32 Tettenhall College Wolverhampton Grammar School State Primary School Listings Shrewsbury School Independent School Listings Wrekin College & Old Hall The Royal School State Secondary School Listings Prestfelde School Shrewsbury High School The Brindley Group Berriman Eaton catchment area Whitchurch TETTENHALL OFFICE 13-15 High Street, Tettenhall Wolverhampton, West Midlands WV6 8QS Tel: 01902 747744 Fax: 01902 747733 Email: tettenhall@berrimaneaton.co.uk Stafford Wem Brocton A518 Newport Donnington Wellington A518 Penkridge Wheaton Aston TF Brewood Shifnal Dawley M54 Broseley Codsall Pattingham SY Bloxwich Wolverhampton Walsall Wednesbury A454 Bridgnorth Wombourne DY Aldridge Sutton Coldfield Bilston Penn Tipton Dudley Shenstone Pelsall Essington WV A442 Brownhills WS Lichfield Hammerwich Great Wyrley Featherstone Albrighton Burntwood Bridgtown A449 Madeley Much Wenlock Cannock M6 A5 Telford A458 WOMBOURNE OFFICE High Street, Wombourne South Staffordshire WV5 9DP Tel: 01902 326366 Fax: 01902 326470 Email: wombourne@berrimaneaton.co.uk Rugeley ST Lilleshall Shrewsbury BRIDGNORTH OFFICE 22-23 Whitburn Street Bridgnorth, Shropshire WV16 4QN Tel: 01746 766499 Fax: 01746 768889 Email: bridgnorth@berrimaneaton.co.uk Little Haywood Gnosall Great Barr West Bromwich A458 Ludlow A442 Highley Brierley Hill Kinver Stourbridge Birmingham Halesowen As publishers we gratefully acknowledge the support given by editorial and advertisers contributors in the Berriman Eaton Local Good School Guide. A unique atmosphere with remarkable opportunities where every pupil achieves their personal best. F ounded in 1863, Tettenhall College is an independent school for boys and girls aged 2 to 18 years. Located on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Tettenhall, the school sits in a beautiful setting of over 30 acres of historic woodlands. With outstanding on-site facilities in a safe and secure environment, pupils are known, taught and nurtured as individuals within a genuine family atmosphere. Pupils thrive in the School’s inspiring and supportive environment. We are proud of the commitment of our staff, and the partnership between the School and parents fosters a unique atmosphere in which our pupils flourish. Children are encouraged and supported in being the very best they can, having a positive mindset and developing a true sense of self-worth. Manners and courtesy are important; good humour and care for one another central. Through the remarkable opportunities we offer with extensive extra-curricular activities, pupils are able to discover their own individual talents and interests and pursue them to the best of their abilities. Academically, our small class sizes and focus on the individual’s learning style ensures that our pupils always achieve their personal best. We have a strong reputation for the quality of our teaching throughout our School, from the initial love of learning that is developed in our younger pupils to the A level courses that our Sixth Formers shine in. We make full use of our stunning location with an on-site Forest School, full sized rugby, football and cricket pitches plus a swimming pool and theatre. Lessons are geared to stimulate and stretch pupils at all levels, and teachers effectively gauge individual ability and personal Tettenhall Edit.indd 1 strengths to encourage the fulfilment of every pupil’s potential. All of the key attributes of a highly successful school are to be found in our latest inspection reports. These make reference to outstanding pastoral care, excellent arrangements for welfare, good progress in learning and academic achievement and exemplary pupil behaviour. At the end of their school journey our leavers are equipped with excellent academic qualifications, essential life skills and a lasting set of values. Take the opportunity to take a closer look, we’d love to show you around. The Shrewsbury prep school is delighted with the conclusions of the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). This best ever report praises every aspect of teaching and learning at the school, saying that pupils have ‘outstanding levels of knowledge, skills and understanding’. A team of six inspectors spent four days examining every aspect of life at Prestfelde, which educates almost 300 pupils aged from three to 13, drawn from throughout Shropshire. “We are absolutely delighted with the findings of the inspection – the assessment of life here at Prestfelde could not be any better,” said Fiona Orchard. Mrs Orchard took over as Head of Prestfelde in January 2016, having been at the School since 2009, firstly as the director of teaching and learning, and more recently as the School’s deputy head (academic). She said “We received excellent ratings in every major category – in fact the word excellent is used 58 times in the document. We are very proud of the whole report but are particularly pleased with the comments made about the high standards of our teaching and learning,” The inspectors concluded that the school was highly successful in meeting its aim of enabling all pupils to develop their love of learning, academic potential and individual talents in both curricular and extra-curricular activities. Prestfelde.indd 1 The report states: “Pupils have outstanding levels of knowledge, skills and understanding and show a positive, reflective and resilient attitude towards learning. They are highly conscientious. “The broad and challenging curriculum fully supports the school’s aims and is suitable for all ages, abilities and needs. The sports teams have a strong record of success, with football, cricket and tennis teams regularly competing in county championships and pupils regularly representing their county. Standards in music are equally strong and the children show confidence and skills in drama.” It adds that the contribution of teaching is excellent, with staff throughout the school ensuring that activities take into account individual pupils’ learning needs. Mrs Orchard believes that it is by ensuring that the children’s time at Prestfelde is a happy, purposeful and fulfilling experience that the School has achieved this glowing endorsement of excellence. 08/02/2016 20:08 LOCAL Good School Guide independent schools Please find listed below a comprehensive listing of the Independent schools in our catchment area. There are many choices available and students need to consider not only which subjects to take but also which school or college’s programme and ethos are most suitable to them. The Royal School achieves excellent A-Level Results in the most rigorous facilitating subjects with a specialism in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. However, results are not the only criteria on which to judge a Sixth Form. Universities and employers want to see well rounded young people. Students need to show they have extras to offer and this is evidenced by activities during non-study time. Co-curricular activities tell a lot about a student whether they are committed, a team player, have leadership qualities, are reliable, show determination, are supportive of peers, are organised, etc. Without these extra activities applications may go to the bottom of the pile. So it is important the Sixth Form provides the opportunities to gain these extras. The Royal School has leadership education, competitive sports, artistic and cultural opportunities as well as travel and a broad range of activities outside of the classroom. Our Sixth Formers are expected to play an Royal Ad 186 x 134_Layout 1 07/12/2015 16:54 Page 1 integral part in the school community through the house system, mentoring, and community service opportunities. They are the role models for our younger students across the school. Personal development opportunities include work experience, university style seminars, a Wednesday afternoon games session, speaker programmes, internships. The School works closely with its alumni and other external partnerships to provide these various programmes to help you develop as a person. As a Free School, the Royal will offer the Extended Project Qualification to reinforce skills in independent learning and study. Lisa Devonport went on several mailing lists and described their ideal home as “within half an hour of Bridgnorth, village location with a good primary school”. Lisa recalls that for their daughter, then only two, the move to a semi-rural location had to accommodate for future educational needs as equally as their urge to be in lovely countryside. Although the internet search engines produced hundreds of properties, it was word of mouth that gave a direction to the short list of schools. Once the field was narrowed down, Lisa and her partner Ian visited some of the village schools rather than relying on the easily obtained Ofsted reports. They were definitely influenced by the “first impression” of the school visits, Stottesdon Primary was quite exceptional and also had an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating. With small classroom sizes, an adjoining nursery and such friendly staff, this became their first choice in the school offering and daughter Scarlett, was entered onto the waiting list. Caroline from Berriman Eaton says: “It was only when we met the family in the office we were able to fully understand their search requirements and engage with advice on the local schools reputations. It really highlights that the internet provides a tool, but for genuine, useful customer service, talking directly to the local agents will give greater assistance.” Having embarked on finding a property in the village within their criteria, then having to sell their existing house and become part of a chain, the process was stressful to ensure that the new term schedule was met. A year on, the anxiety is a distant memory. “Scarlett is thriving in the school with a class size of 12” and their home with views of the Clee, and a delightful pub in the lane, the family believe they have fulfilled all their desires thanks to thorough research and planning. 26 23 - 26 Secondary Schools.indd 4 14/02/2016 21:10 TRADITIONAL VALUES T HE celebration of individuals and individual talent is central to education at Shrewsbury – both in and beyond the classroom. In whatever sphere, a pupil will find staff to support and encourage, enthuse and inspire him or her to exceed their expectations and meet the challenges that lie ahead with confidence and good judgement. The school can be found perched high on the riverbank of the Severn, overlooking the ancient town of Shrewsbury and the Shropshire hills beyond. Life at Shrewsbury is founded on a close partnership between staff, parents and pupils to promote the strength of family life, foster responsibility, and balance the claims of developing individuality with the needs of a vibrant community. To make this ideal a living and working reality, the School cares for its pupils in Houses. We are passionate about boarding not just being for convenience, but in providing the best opportunity for young men and women to develop real confidence and belief in themselves. We are delighted that in September 2014 we welcomed our first cohort of Third and Fourth Form girls, building on the outstanding success of the introduction of girls into our Sixth Form in 2008. We believe our traditional values and time-honoured reputation will be enhanced by this move to full co-education. We are committed to providing an environment where young men and women can learn together on foundations of trust and mutual respect. Shrewsbury is a unique school in many ways. We are committed to strong academic standards and we believe in a vision of holistic education, as demonstrated through an incredible range of different activities and societies. Shrewsbury has a wellearned reputation for academic, musical and sporting excellence, the Independent Schools Inspection Report commented that Shrewsbury offered, ‘outstanding education…outstanding pastoral care’, while the Good Schools Guide observed that ‘‘What you get here is a unique blend of wholeheartedness, humanity and down-to-earth decency, a place where hard work and fun are indistinguishable. If you like what you see, look no further. You’ve found it.’ SHREWSBURY SCHOOL INDIVIDUALITY LIFE FREEDOM ATMOSPHERE Co-educational boarding & day school for pupils aged 13 -18 www.shrewsbury.org.uk Shrewsbury School.indd 1 08/02/2016 20:09 successful period for shrewsbury high school with two national awards S hrewsbury High School is one of the leading independent Schools in the County with a fully Co-Ed Prep School set in 14 acres, five minutes away from the Girls Senior School that is based in the centre of Shrewsbury on Town Walls. The School is celebrating an extremely successful 18 months, having received two national education awards. The Independent School Award was the first such award for any school in Shropshire and was soon followed up by an Education Business Award for its outstanding sporting facilities and provision, including the SHS Gymnastics Academy, its Elite Athlete Programme and SHS Boat Club. The School received another Independent School Awards nomination for its innovative LEGO robotics programme. Mrs Kate Millichamp joined Shrewsbury High Prep School as its Head in September 2015. Welcoming boys and girls from the age of 3, the School offers wrap around care from 8am – 6pm and accepts the Government’s Childcare vouchers for 3-5 year olds. It is a lively, ambitious and very happy school with its own woodland so that all children benefit from regular Forest School sessions. Each child receives a Shrewsbury High School.indd 1 stimulating and individualised education that prepares them for the world beyond school with specialist teachers across the curriculum from languages to music. Boys stay at the School until the age of 13 and the School works extremely closely with parents to help them choose the best future school for their son, whether it be locally or further afield. Prep pupils benefit from sharing the facilities on offer at the School’s Senior department so that when girls leave Year 6 and head up to the Senior School, the transition for them is as seamless as possible. Michael Getty is Head of the Senior School that has a well established reputation for outstanding academic achievement but that offers an all-round education with its sports, drama and music provision amongst the best in the County. Scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form. Shrewsbury High School has its own fleet of School minibuses that bring children to both Schools from around Shropshire and Wolverhampton. The business has recently announced plans to undergo a four month-long, major refurbishment at the dealership, taking place early 2016 until late spring 2016. Brindley Garages Group are investing £1 million into the Brindley Wolverhampton franchise to develop a state-of-theart dealership to encourage greater customer interaction as part of the Volvo Retail Experience programme. The new site is part of a global brand standard that Volvo Car UK is rolling out across its dealer network to coincide with major investments in Volvo’s range of vehicles. ‘Volvo Retail Experience’, or VRE for short, will focus on the space and design of the Wolverhampton dealership and will be designed to reflect Volvo’s Scandinavian-inspired values of calm, clean lines with ‘cool on the outside and warm on the inside’-style architecture. The development will allow the new state-of-the-art facility to include a large interior glass window allowing you to see all activity in the new workshops, turning the spotlight on what is often regarded as ‘back of house’. James Elkes, Dealer Principal for Brindley’s Wolverhampton dealership, said: “VRE has been designed to tackle the challenge of bridging the gap between an ever-improving market sector and the current Volvo dealership customer experience. “After being greeted by your own dedicated service advisor in our brand new entrance, you will then be able relax in our comfortable ‘living room’ waiting area while you can see your vehicle in the workshop. Brindley Edit.indd 1 Workshops are integral to your customer experience, so by being able to see in and out of the ‘window’ this creates a symbol of trust between us as you’ll be able to see exactly what work the technicians are carrying out. “VRE isn’t just about a change of furniture though - it’s a new way of retailing designed to make our customers feel relaxed and at ease in an environment that informs and provides flexible waiting, working and assessment areas.” For more information visit www. volvocarswolverhampton.co.ukn or call 01902 690715. 08/02/2016 20:11 The Brand New £1million Brindley Volvo dealership WORK STARTS IN THE NEW YEAR, OPENING IN LATE SPRING 2016 AT WEST STREET, WOLVERHAMPTON The Brand New VOLVO XC90 from £45,750 For full specification and model variants please visit: www.volvocars.com/uk/all-cars/all-new-volvo-xc90 Official fuel consumption for the All-New Volvo XC90 in mpg (l/100km) [excluding T8 Twin Engine – full figures not yet available]: Urban: 28.8 (9.8) – 45.6 (6.2), Extra Urban: 40.4 (7.0) – 52.3 (5.4), Combined 35.3 (8.0) - 49.6 (5.7).
