IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), and ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Division (DSCD) jointly sponsor this conference. AIM is the flagship conference of the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. Mechatronics is a term coined back in 1960s to establish a synergy between mechanical, electrical/electronic and software technologies in order to design and realise products, systems and processes which are more cost effective, efficient and intelligent than their predecessors. It is not only a multi-disciplinary engineering field, but also a concurrent design approach going beyond classical sequential design and system development approaches, taking into interactions between the system components, concepts, and design and operation parameters. AIM2013 conference brings together an international community of experts to discuss the state-of-the-art, new research results, perspectives of future developments, and innovative applications relevant to mechatronics, robotics, control, automation, and related areas. The theme of this conference is “Mechatronics for Human Wellbeing”, which emphasises the significance of Mechatronics in enhancing the quality of life for society. AIM2013 received 439 submissions from 44 countries. After the peer review process based on full-paper submissions, 300 papers have been accepted for inclusion in the conference program and proceedings. The papers which will be presented in 51 technical sessions with 7 tracks on the first day and 6 tracks on the remaining two days of the conference. The papers are grouped in sessions which deal with topics such as: actuators, sensors, MEMS and Micro/Nano manipulation, image processing, sensing and manipulation in mechatronic systems, biomechatronics, analysis and applications of magnetic fields, mobile robots, legged robots, human-machine interfaces, parallel mechanisms, robot dynamics and control, medical robotics, rehabilitation robotics, and many other frontier fields of mechatronics. There will be one workshop entitled “Intelligent Manufacturing (AIM-WIM)” and two tutorials entitled “Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Electromagnetic Spherical Actuators” and “Magnetorheological Technology and Its Application in Vehicle Suspension Control Systems”, which will be held on July 9, 2013. The other highlights of the technical program are three plenary talks, two semi-plenary talks, and a “Forum on Grand Research Challenges in Mechatronics”. AIM2013 will be held in Novotel on the beautiful Northbeach of Wollongong. The hotel is located on the beach and is within easy walking distance of the city centre, shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants, sporting grounds and tourist attractions of the Illawarra region. Wollongong, which is known as the City of Innovation, is located 80 km south of Sydney and is the gateway to the spectacular South Coast region of New South Wales.
