The purpose of the course is to advance the understanding of nursing and health care from a global point of view. An ecological perspective is used to explore multiple determinants of health in Thailand, with an emphasis on Thai culture and related to traditional and Western style practices. You will be introduced to nursing education in two major universities in Thailand, Chiang Mai University and Mahidol University, and you will have the chance to interact with Thai nursing students in their clinical activities. You will also have the opportunity to learn about prevention and control of infectious disease through lectures and field visits with staff from the USAID organization. Through this course, you will be able to understand the relationship between global health issues and your own practice in the United States. Prerequisite: Admission to the UNF Nursing program Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city of Thailand. In the span of over two hundred years, Bangkok has been the political, social and economic center of not only Thailand but also for much of South East Asia. The following fieldtrips and visits are (among others) part of your academic programming: Office of the Education Ministry (HIV/AIDS Mission) Boonchoo Thai Massage, Hang Dong District Its influence in the arts, politics, fashion, education, and entertainment, as well as being the business, financial and cultural center of Asia, has given Bangkok the status of a global city. IMT (International Training, Massage School) Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital Well Baby Clinic, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital Chiang Mai is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. The city stands on the Ping River and is located about 435 miles north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country. Chiang Mai's historic importance is derived from its strategic location on an ancient trade route: it served as a major center for handcrafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving. In Bangkok, you will be accommodated in housing on campus organized through Mahidol University as well as one night in a centrally located hotel. Nursing Students at Mahidol University In Chiang Mai, you will be staying in a hotel just outside the campus of Chiang Mai University. Besides these activities, you will have time on your own to explore other sites and location according to your personal interest. must attend a safety orientation meeting organized by the International Center (time/date/place-TBA), as well as all mandatory orientation meetings conducted by the faculty leader. Approximate cost for the course program is $1,150.
